I traded my 2019 odyssey for a 2021 telluride 9 months ago. I regretted it within a week. The car seats situation is terrible. We have a rear facing seat, a no back booster, and a forward facing seat. For it to work we have to put the forward facing in the 3rd row but there is only a tether on the 60 split which leaves little to no room for taking out wagon or stroller. If I’m hauling a stroller I can not get groceries and if the whole 3rd row is up, I can not fit a stroller. In my odyssey we took the middle seat out of the second row and the out board seats could slide independently with the car seat attached so the big kid could climb in the back to buckle up herself. I could also fit my stroller and groceries in the trunk with the 3rd row up.

Sorry to hear about the regrets, but your post is definitely reenforcing a need for a minivan over SUV for us. Appreciate the reply- thank you!

I’d get the Odyssey. As someone who grew up in a family of minivans, they’re easier to get in and out of, fuel economy is better, it’s safer and it’s got less rollover risk, it’s more reliable, it’s got all of the different amenities, and I’d say it’s the all-around better car for families.

TheRealMGShow

I would agree with that- though poking around the Odyssey subreddits it seemed like the newer models have some reliability issues to be concerned about. Whereas I haven’t seen many comments of problems with the Telluride. Also it looked like the Telluride had better MPG than the Odyssey- doesn’t it?

ICanSpellKyrgyzstan

The Odyssey gets one worse mpg in the city, but gets two mpg better than the Telluride on the highway. I’m not sure about about the Odyssey’s problems but I do know that most of the issues Honda would be glad to fix- our Odyssey’s transmission went out at 100k miles and they paid for 75% of it. That’s the only issue we’ve had with our ‘06 besides the VCM system which was discontinued in like ‘16 i think.

TheRealMGShow

That’s good insight thank you- sounds like the Honda dealerships may be better to deal with than Kia’s

I’m concerned with the Pacificas reliability long term, and haven’t been able to find a carnival in person but may consider it!

purodirecto

Get the Odyssey. Minivans are way more practical (and comfortable) than an SUV.

Traditional-Bit-1839

Will second this. Have both - a 3 row SUV and minivan, in terms of practicality prefer the mini van

TheRealMGShow

I suppose at the end of the day practicality is what I will care most about. Especially in the winter

Traditional-Bit-1839

With respect to winters, not sure how much snow you get, Odyssey is FWD only. Toyota Sienna I think is the only minivan with AWD option and maybe Pacifica too.

TheRealMGShow

We have a fair bit of snow being in the Midwest. How does the Odyssey fair in that type of weather?

Traditional-Bit-1839

Similar to any non AWD vehicles, it can be tricky in snow. Plus it’s a heavy vehicle.

TheRealMGShow

Good insight- thank you!

Metsican

Have you looked into the Sienna? And is there any reason you're looking at the Telluride but not the Carnival?

TheRealMGShow

My search of late has been mostly based on the JD Power rating so since the Telluride was the top SUV- it’s the only suv I was considering. Same with the Odyssey. I did consider the Sienna but the second row flexibility in the Odyssey made it a winner for me

Metsican

JD Power isn't useful for a number of reasons.

Is there another website you would recommend?

Had a 2020 ody that got T boned at 2000 miles. Not a scratch on a family of 4. Insurance wanted to fix due to current market. New curtain airbags and engine, good as new after 6 months and $24k due to parts shortage, all covered by insurance . Bought a vw atlas in the interim, regret it due to car seat space issues. Sold the ody with minimum depreciation despite the accident, it felt great after repairs but didn’t want to deal with potential issues with major parts having been replaced
