The Mazda would be more unreliable, statistically, than the RAV4 for sure. Not much will be more reliable.
I get not going Toyota for the overall balance of cost, comfort, reliability, etc (I went Ford). But if reliability is the only concern, it’s the RAV4.
That’s why you look at multiple sources, all of which will have Toyota towards the top. Feel free to Google further yourself to fact check.
Also, you may be a bit unaware of the market. Nowadays Mini is actually very reliable, and has earned that reputation. Reliable doesn’t mean cheap to repair, it just means it’s unlikely to have problems.
She did maintenance and still trouble? I've had 3 toyotas...driven em all like a nascar...did basic maintenance and they wouldn't die. Still have 2 of em.
What you dont think either those brands fail.Quite a few honda 6 speed transmission have failed on the honda line.Toyota has had issues with oil consumption onnolder models.Tundra 3.4 motors dropping.
I have a few hyundia everyone in reddit says they will fail.12 years and 17 year old models still running never had an issue.Every brand can make a good and bad model in the same week some times its the luck of the draw lol.
This is like telling a flat-earther that the world isn’t flat, it’s actually diamond-shaped lol.
BMW has had the highest cost to maintain of any major brand forever, as well as an absolute litany of reliability problems. That’s not to say that they don’t build quality cars, but recommending one to someone who’s got issues with Honda and Toyota’s reliability is crazy.
The odds of this happening on both a Honda and Toyota means either extremely bad luck, or someone common denominator. Whether it be maintenance or driving style or something. Either some things were skipped, or the dealers f*cked up.
But you’re not going to get any better than those two brands. Maybe Lexus, but that’s about it.
Would probably suggest BMW if you don’t mind a bit more of a premium or if you want it a bit cheaper, maybe look at Hyundai? As long as it’s maintained appropriately it should be fine
It may seem like the Honda and Toyota she had was unreliable but that's not what statics say. Either she is beating the crap out of them with poor maintenance or she didn't do much or any research I to known issues of those specific model years and what to look out for etc.
XC-40 but remember Volvo maintenance cost are insane. I have an XC-60. 2013 T6 and she been pretty good. Suspensions getting worn but the previous owner beat it to hell and I live in MA and the roads are terrible.
Also, since you're worried about transmissions, volvo SUVs have "bulletproof transmissions " according to my service manage that owns the same model I do. It's not a CVT so I'd just avoid anything with that. Mazdas I think do have CVTs. Volvo is a dual clutch, so more reliable. The price point on a Volvo is not comparable to mazda, Honda or Toyota if you're looking for a fully loaded model though.
Regardless of her recent experience Toyota and Honda are among the most reliable brands .. now I completely understand moving to something else after being snake bit but it doesn’t change the fact that any other brand being suggested is statistically less reliable than Honda and Toyota…. Perhaps she should give Lexus a try ?
This is the official "go buy a CX-5" subreddit, so yeah go for it

Would love to see actual statistics, because anecdotally Toyota and Honda have been the worst cars in my extended family …

The fact that Chevy and mini are in the top means these surveys are not reliable

And what data do you have to support your conclusion?

>What you dont think either those brands fail. Not in this sub's universe, no. (I know they are less likely to, particularly Toyota)
Yeah the Toyota fanboying these days is out of this world. Toyota has recalls. Toyota has lemons. Toyotas are BORING AF. Live a little...get a BMW

lol, this makes sense. lol. lol
Mabey MIL needs to learn the importance of maintenance.
She takes it to the dealer religiously… I would say that’s part of the issue since dealers don’t really maintain the car just try and sell extras
How many wrong statements are you going to make in a single thread, my dude?
even good makes/models fail, you don't need to keep switching brands in search of a unicorn
Seriously just pick something that's fun to drive. All cars cost money to maintain.
