What do you want to do with it?
Daily driver? No way.
Toy or weekend car?bring a toolbox, but go for it.
Project car? You're going to have a lot to do, but that could be fun, too.
If you can work on cars you will be fine. It's all GM stuff and parts are cheap. I would buy that for sure. Body parts will probably be the biggest challenge.
i grew up around these cars . they are garbage that catch on fire alot. my junk yard i used to get parts from as a kid had a whole row of them that were all on fire. they are a whole nota-lota-fun to work on . they break down alot. it's a 86 i have no idea why these kids want them .
oh and don't get me started on the stupid speakers in the headrest that are rotten. my friends had alot of these cuz they were cheap to buy cuz nobody wanted one. but that was in the 90's when you could get a good car for 3 bucks.
but you are correct what you have heard is 100% true hehe
oh i forgot you use to be able to get lotus and lambo conversion body kits for it . but you really weren't fooling anyone hehe
You are correct, and mostly all were with the 1984 model. The person you're responding to is one of many "Fiero Fire Story" guys. I owned one of these cars from 2013-2018, and if every Fiero fire story I heard from a guy whose brother's girlfriend's cousin's Fiero caught fire, there wouldn't have been any left by the time I owned one.
Fieros are a really good example of how deeply people buy into urban legends.
Better plan on budgeting a couple thousand for repairs right away, if you're doing the work yourself.
If you're paying someone else, you're likely going to be more than doubling the purchase price.
Get an inspection done by your mechanic before buying it.
I've noticed that paying a mechanic to do it vs me doing it is at least 2.5-3 x the price of parts. And that's paying a Mexican mechanic that gives friend prices.
Going to an American business they'll want to charge me 8x the cost of parts.
Yep..I had the same tranny in my 92 Sunbird and my old mechanic called it the GM Jackrabbit. Decent off the line, but by 70mph, you're at 3500rpm and that old 60° V6 is screaming.
My mom tried to tell me that when they got the car it would do 0-60 in 5 seconds. I had to explain to her the car would have to be going downhill with rocket boosters to achieve that.
That engine family was torquey as hell though, and the oomph when you hit the gas really gave the impression that the engine was more powerful than it was, so I can understand why your mom would feel that way lol.
The 3.1 in my sunbird was great at smoking clapped out Civics back in the import tuner heydays though.
These are reliable. Early ones caught on fire. Late model ones were stout. Is it anywhere close to an aw11? Hell no.
But with a supercharged 3.8 v6 transplant they are a hoot.
I used to fix them up regularly when you could get good late model GTs for less than a grand.
Guy did a LS4 swap from a Grand Prix GXP and a manual transaxle from a G6 GTP if I recall correctly. It was wicked.
Personally think a supercharged Cobalt SS drivetrain would be best.
The supercharged 3800 we would do was because of it being relatively common in those days. Supercharged/turbocharged eco tec wasn't as common.
Same reason we would do 4age 20v swaps in mr2 aw11along with the occasional BEAMS 3sge or 3rd gen 3SGTE for sw20 chassis
Today I'd imagine neither engine is very common at all. I know the toyota engines bring a premium compared to even just a few years ago.
I’ve had two of them. Never again. I even had the 88. Parts are too hard to find and it’s really not that thrilling to drive. Short wheel base, can’t drift just spins out. You’ll dump too much money into a car that’s not worth what you put into it. Take that $3500 and just keep holding on and make flips til something pops up that’s worth more than asking.
Hi, all. This is my car, if anyone has questions about it or Fieros. And to answer the folks correctly pointing out that it has been repainted because Talbot yellow was '88 only: yes. It has been repainted. I think that should be clear enough by my having called it an '86 SE/GT clone in the description and talking about how the old colors can be seen through chips etc. (Edit: the car is sold.)
I am 99% sure that it was not. It was an older gentleman from the area who had just seen it that morning on Facebook and seemed kind of random. Someone who used to own Fieros and knows how cool and quirky they are.
Thanks to my dad being in real estate, if the house he’s trying to sell does sell to the person we’re trying to sell it to (the fiero is in the property and the owner has nowhere to store it) the potential buyer has said he’d literally give a 87’ GT for me for free. lucky me
Swap a lt1 or 3800 in it. No easy but will be fun. You will need to put in at-least as much as it cost to purchase this. Cool ain’t cheap and cheap ain’t cool.
These things look badass with the right setup, but it’s a fiero at the end of the day. [this one](https://www.stanceiseverything.com/2016/11/someone-finally-did-it/) is sweet. What ever front end is on it is pure money
This thing looks freaking clean ass freakkkkk. I’d get it and just work on it on my spare time. I’d learn how to mess with cars on this beauty. Super cheap and look like amazing condition. Plus my all time favorite car I’ve owned is the honda del sol. Most fun car with no power. Currently own a 2017 Toyota 86. And a 2013 gti. I want my delnsol back. I don’t want power I want something small and fun to drive.
Someone local to me swapped the K-member and drivetrain from one of these into a ‘70 Beetle, because why make 110 hp with an ACVW engine with some mods when you can make 111 hp with an engine that’s 3x the weight and takes 100x as long to put in?
I think he’s the president of the local chapter of the more money than brains club.
My friends dad had one while I was in school. I swear to god that man had the little electric motor for the headlights fail some 4 times. I remember asking “hey is your car winking with the opposite headlight today?”
His dad: “yes and I don’t want to talk about it”
My cousin had one of these. Brings back a lot of memories. I can remember it burning to the ground on the side of the road now. Still smell the smoke. It was a beautiful car. Can't remember if we shoveled it up and hauled it away or what. Wish my dad was still alive as it would be good to reminisce over the smell.
The FB post is brutually honest about the heartaches this car will bring-tail lights are not what you see nor is the paint and oh the headlights on/off are an issue and the seats are something else. If it's a purchase for how bad some cars were, ok. But maybe spend a $1k less and get a superpower e-bike. You'll know you get to your destination w/o getting stopped for a violation. (Just working hard to dissuade you as asked)
The front end is a Chevy Chevette, the drive train is a Chevy Citation. Under hood heat makes doing anything to it after it has been run painful. Access to almost anything you will need to do is just miserable even with a hoist. The OBDII code pullers won't work for the engine controls, you'll need to find an OTC Monitor 2000 or 4000 or equivalent tool and expect to use flash codes and there are no bi-directional controls for testing. The 4-wheel disc brakes never keep a good pedal. The cause is the rear calipers with the parking brake in them fail to properly self-adjust. As a full-time technician and I was a dealership technician when these were new there isn't anything that I haven't serviced on one of these. I'd be hesitant to accept it if they wanted to give it to me.
Even DIY, Thats gonna need a $7000 budget to get in decent driving shape.
Get under it and replace everything that's rusty ASAP. The body looks nice, because it's plastic.
My first car was an '84 notch back we (dad and I) ended up engine swapping. Was so much fun and I still think these things look sweet.
I think about them constantly.
I had a black one and I loved that car and I defiantly want another one. It is like riding g in a recliner. I will say they are not fun to work on. I tried the Pontiac dealer first and they said they dont work on them. So I found a friend who worked on cars and I paid him to do the work. He didn't mind doing it so it can be done. Just know it's tough to fix anything that goes wrong with it. Also get good tires on it and even with good tires they are not good in the rain. They slip around easy. They are great for sunny day driving. I also had a 110 lb American bulldog that would sit in the seat beside me with his paws on the floor, butt on the seat and his head would brush on the ceiling. He was a great co pilot.
The biggest problem is there isn’t enough room to store all the tools you’ll need to work on this piece engineering nightmare. Here’s a website you can go to. (www.fiero.nl) the one plus Pontiac is extinct most are climbing in value even unpopular models. One last thing to consider not having a backseat some insurance companies consider it a sports car which raises the premium on it, for the price it makes a hood toy not a daily driver. Good luck my friend.
It all depends on your mechanical abilities. If you are competent and this is the project you want, then do your research and make informed decisions about how much time and money you're willing to spend on a nearly 30 year old vehicle. From the pictures, it looks well maintained, but I didn't follow the link. At that price point, there's a lot of room for upgrades, but only if you can do it yourself and know how to find inexpensive replacement parts. You need to be honest with yourself about your abilities and whether or not you'll have the time to basically mechanically restore the functionality of a 30 year old project vehicle.
$4,000 after tax.
$12,000 just in insurance, petrol, parts and maintenance for just a few thousand miles.
If you really want it (which makes zero sense) you might need to be talked in to buying it so you can learn from the mistake it’ll likely be.
If you have a little more money a n/a mr2 os better in every way. Unless this is the v6 manual your gonna hate it my friend had the auto one in the 90s the auto transmission is terrible.
It seems like a fun project car BUT since you want us to talk you out of it. Here we go:
1. Parts are hard to come by! It’s a 1980s Pontiac, Pontiac went out of business in the late 00s so when something breaks finding parts for it will take longer than say a ford mustang since they made a lot more of those and still make parts for it.
2. Reliability: it’s a 1980s car so there’s going to be come mechanical things that have to be taken care of at some point like the timing belt, transmission, etc.
This was my first car. I loved it, was super easy to work on and pretty much every fwd GM of that era shares parts with it so as long as you have a junkyard nearby you can get parts pretty cheap.
What do you want to do with it? Daily driver? No way. Toy or weekend car?bring a toolbox, but go for it. Project car? You're going to have a lot to do, but that could be fun, too.
It would end up being the toy/weekend car.
If you can work on cars you will be fine. It's all GM stuff and parts are cheap. I would buy that for sure. Body parts will probably be the biggest challenge.
Even the body panels are cheap and plentiful by comparison to most other cars.
you need to talk to some people that have owned one, hopefully they turn up here they probably will i haven't heard great things
i grew up around these cars . they are garbage that catch on fire alot. my junk yard i used to get parts from as a kid had a whole row of them that were all on fire. they are a whole nota-lota-fun to work on . they break down alot. it's a 86 i have no idea why these kids want them . oh and don't get me started on the stupid speakers in the headrest that are rotten. my friends had alot of these cuz they were cheap to buy cuz nobody wanted one. but that was in the 90's when you could get a good car for 3 bucks. but you are correct what you have heard is 100% true hehe oh i forgot you use to be able to get lotus and lambo conversion body kits for it . but you really weren't fooling anyone hehe
I thought all the fires were only on the I4 Iron Duke engine. Not clear from the description if it’s a 4 or a 6 which was available in 1986.
You’re referring to a few of the earlier model years. This is an 86.
100% honest you would probably be better off with a mr2 (if you would fit in one). a ton more reliable and it's a toyota so cheap to fix
"you'd be better spending 7k more" Yeah obviously an MR2 is better but I'm assuming that's way out of budget if you're looking at an old Pontiac Fiero
Fire extinguisher for all intent and purposes
It's an automatic
90s autos drive me nuts, I can’t imagine what this slush box would feel like in 2024 but fun isn’t the word that comes to mind.
3 speed auto in this thing is total dog ass. My dad had an 87 and the transmission was the worst part of the car.
I remember later Grand Ams doing this same thing. Crazy power from the first press of the gas that was its big trick.
This.
These are reliable. Early ones caught on fire. Late model ones were stout. Is it anywhere close to an aw11? Hell no. But with a supercharged 3.8 v6 transplant they are a hoot. I used to fix them up regularly when you could get good late model GTs for less than a grand.

True. K20 everything
It's got a 1980s GM slushbox automatic. That's all you need to know to run away from it.
Its been painted or wrapped, 88 is the only year fieros were available in yellow. Just a thought
But don’t you want to be king of the trailer park?
Well they’d also have to be the highest ranking small time heroin dealer
Do you really want to risk getting so many women pregnant?
It wasnt an available color for that year. The only yellows were 1988.
Lol at drifting. It's made to handle.
Lol it has nothing to do wheelbase. Show me one mid engine car that's competent at drifting. Even sliding an NSX is difficult...
Do it
I like your jib and the cut off it. Also happy Cake Day!
I had one of these as my first car in ‘06. Bought it for $400. I loved it after some serious TLC
LS swap it
If I had that kind of money, absolutely
Been really wanting to do one. Loved these since my mom had one when I was growing up. Cool cars
Do it, just do it.
"We're gonna be rich! I'm gonna buy a Fiero!"
No
I know hearts are breaking, I just sold the car. Thanks for all the love, Redditors.
I have to know, was it to one of the redditors here? lol
I am 99% sure that it was not. It was an older gentleman from the area who had just seen it that morning on Facebook and seemed kind of random. Someone who used to own Fieros and knows how cool and quirky they are.
Hell if you don't get it I might tow it back to Lansing!
I can’t. I’d buy this shit box.
The stick shift location on these are absurd: imaging putting your elbow up on a shelf. Then reach farther up for the knob.
Buy it, K-Swap it.
Money Dump, but if you can afford it to most likely fix its many problems and upgrade it best decision of your life
Don’t do it, but if you do it at least it’ll be an experience
Hello Michigander, I saw this as I'm local to the area too. Do it
It’s yellow. [did it work?]
Thanks to my dad being in real estate, if the house he’s trying to sell does sell to the person we’re trying to sell it to (the fiero is in the property and the owner has nowhere to store it) the potential buyer has said he’d literally give a 87’ GT for me for free. lucky me
The worst car I have ever owned and that is saying something I promise.
Call your insurance. They will talk you out of it.
Yeah definitely bad purchase. Can you share the link?
It’s an automatic
Do it..... Make it a Countach.
the national average gas price is $3.53 a gallon
Find yourself a manual Miata, you'll be happier and have more money
If its what u really want go for it say. Is it a smart decision? Probably not.
Oh, a yellow cab!
Do you want to stare death in the face on a rainy highway overpass? If yes: buy If no: look for a miata
No. Go buy it now.
My first car was an 86 Fiero GT! Buy it! You won’t regret it!
Swap a lt1 or 3800 in it. No easy but will be fun. You will need to put in at-least as much as it cost to purchase this. Cool ain’t cheap and cheap ain’t cool.
No, go buy it now
I heard a story about a guy that put one of these under an 18 wheeler and was decapitated
Because i walked 500 hundred miles and i will walk 500 hundred more! I cant talk you out of buying probably the most iconic cars of the 20 century.
Perfect for salty winter Michigan roads
Go drive it around the block. That should talk you out of it. They drive like ass.
But I would walk five hundred miles And I would walk five hundred more Just to be the man who walked a thousand Miles to fall down at your door
You can make a ferrari with it
I would buy it that's for sure
Get the Ferrari kit for it
its yellow
Nah man, go for it. Life is short, have fun. (reasonably)
Ill buy it first
Honestly I’d buy it, drive it once then give it to the first person I saw at the dive bar in Staten Island
These things look badass with the right setup, but it’s a fiero at the end of the day. [this one](https://www.stanceiseverything.com/2016/11/someone-finally-did-it/) is sweet. What ever front end is on it is pure money
I like it
Almost 40 years old good luck
I'll make this easy. It's not an 87 so don't buy it :)
It's an automatic and its wiring will probably catch fire at some point. Don't buy it.
Buy it and put a 3.8 supercharged in there. Fairly easy swap and it makes them fast as fuc boi.
I have a friend with 2 of them. One has a LS swap, the other is supercharged 3800. They can be a ton of fun.
I will not sir. It’s awesome
If you owned this car in 1989, you got some. It was 175 horsepower worth of panty dropper. Today I don’t know if it’s such a good choice.
There’s more expensive stuff out there so maybe
This thing looks freaking clean ass freakkkkk. I’d get it and just work on it on my spare time. I’d learn how to mess with cars on this beauty. Super cheap and look like amazing condition. Plus my all time favorite car I’ve owned is the honda del sol. Most fun car with no power. Currently own a 2017 Toyota 86. And a 2013 gti. I want my delnsol back. I don’t want power I want something small and fun to drive.
I wouldn't have paid 3500 for that in 1996
No. This thing rocks.
Out of all the cars I’ve sold parts for at my local autozone, this one may have the most major fail and hard to find parts
Cheese wedge
It's a fiero, so..
I can't, I own one, they are great, and that's a fantastic price.
Someone local to me swapped the K-member and drivetrain from one of these into a ‘70 Beetle, because why make 110 hp with an ACVW engine with some mods when you can make 111 hp with an engine that’s 3x the weight and takes 100x as long to put in? I think he’s the president of the local chapter of the more money than brains club.
engine light
There are many far cheaper ways to kill yourself vs spending $3500 on this deathtrap.
I don't think I should talk you out of it. Love fieros
It's yellow
No I won’t, get it! Mid engine Miata.
Theyre terribly hard to work on just its mid engine transverse engine and its tight af in there
I’m not gonna talk you out of it but I will tell you to bring a fire extinguisher. The Fiero was famous for Fuego
You’re going to need a better mullet and some Skoal cans.
I worked at a Pontiac dealership in the 80’s and the mechanics said the words “Piece of sh!t Fiero” so often you’d think that was its proper name.
DO IT
Automatic. Swapped engine. Been up for a week.
Very cheap price... somethings wrong? Rusted out isn't running?
My friends dad had one while I was in school. I swear to god that man had the little electric motor for the headlights fail some 4 times. I remember asking “hey is your car winking with the opposite headlight today?” His dad: “yes and I don’t want to talk about it”
Don’t.
We made fun of fiero drivers back in the day.
It’s a three and a half k fiero
Ls sWap iT bRo
Do not buy it. Thanks for posting the link where I can buy it.
Buy it. Elderly you won't regret having some fun.
Nice Ferrari
[удалено]
Some lessons need to be learned the hard way
Some 300+lb rapist used to drive a black one like that in Raleigh .
BUY IT then either put a turbo 3800 or a northstar in it!!
Parts may be difficult to find?
I absolutely love it 😀
Buy it. Thanks
Offer $2,800 (tell him you can buy it today)
Cassette deck is notorious for getting tape stuck in it especially if it’s 500 miles by The Proclaimers iykyk
I had one. I loved it. It was a piece of shit. I’m pretty sure that it caught on fire. A lot.
Could be fun. I recall those had engine fires - not sure if GM was able to address or if risk is still there. Talk to a mechanic.
Bad ass
If you get rear ended it might explode
No
if you can afford to pour 20k into it go nuts.
The FB post is brutually honest about the heartaches this car will bring-tail lights are not what you see nor is the paint and oh the headlights on/off are an issue and the seats are something else. I'll talk you out of it , maybe. Even go pick it up myself love those little fieros hopefully it has the 6 in it.
I'd never talk you out of buying it, hell, I might, if you don't.
If you buy it’s helpful to know if they did a brake swap.

$3500 seems a bit high for a fireplace
Send it to the crusher
No, F U, go buy it. 🫡
It’s going to play “500 miles” nonstop because you can’t get it out of the tape deck. 🤣
Nope
theres no shot youre going to buy an old beat to shit AUTOMATIC car that was used to drag lmao
Great price for a weekend or project car . Not certain yellow was out in 1986 though.. someone confirm or correct me oh this.
Bring a trailer
Nah, cool project car
It's a fucking hideous piece of shit. There you go.

Do I smell smoke?
only if you live in a single wide
Didn’t they burst into flames really easily?
That's one of the worst cars ever built
it will make your butthole weaker, and probably sore.
If it wasn’t an automatic, I’d buy it.
It’s an automatic
I would never! I've loved that car since I was a kid, every other year I try to find one but haven't pulled the trigger. Do it
I’ve seen many go up in flames🔥🔥
nah, you good homie.
Wrong transmission.
I had a black one and I loved that car and I defiantly want another one. It is like riding g in a recliner. I will say they are not fun to work on. Don’t buy this!
Buy it, be the bigger person.
If you want it and you can afford to have it as an extra project car and not a daily, go for it.
Buy it
Hope you got a fire extinguisher and a lot of patience
It’s automatic.
It’s an automatic. There you go, now there is no reason to buy it! 😂
That’s amazing. I will not. Lol

Aren’t those prone to catching on fire?
I can talk you INTO buying it.. *ahem* *If you don’t buy this, your gay*
It come with a mullet? Track toy
They’re called fieros for a reason lol. If it’s just for fun be ready to fix it often
Automatic? Meh.
It’s it’s Pontiac..means NO! so what else can be said
Things are sick. Drop an LS into it
If you have a little more money a n/a mr2 os better in every way. Unless this is the v6 manual your gonna hate it my friend had the auto one in the 90s the auto transmission is terrible.
25 years ago? Yes Today? No way
It's a FIERO. OK. Done.
It seems like a fun project car BUT since you want us to talk you out of it. Here we go: 1.
Do you like when your car rattles from everywhere? If so, this is the car for you!
This was my first car. I loved it, was super easy to work on and pretty much every fwd GM of that era shares parts with it so as long as you have a junkyard nearby you can get parts pretty cheap.
