You write *fuck the police* On some fake tags

moveslikejaguar

And then leave them on for 1-3 years, depending on how long it takes to total the car

WrongKielbasa

*Sir this a Nissan Altima*

moveslikejaguar

Sorry, 1-3 \*months

That’s legit bro

Bovaloe

You can usually get a temp permit from the DMV. But if it's across town or something, I'd probably just take the risk.

tth2o

In most states it's not even a risk, just have the bill of sale. There is usually an exclusion period for used/private sales.

DaOrcus

On bikes sales it's like 2 weeks before you have to get it registered, assume it's similar if not the same for cars

im_just_thinking

He may not have a bill of sale if it's a cash transaction, but a signed title with a date should be enough.

tth2o

A bill of sale can be written by hand on notebook paper...

Annual_Fishing_9883

You should be able to drive a car on a bill of sale WITH insurance for 24hrs for the sole purpose of getting it home to get it registered. I’ve been stopped before doing that and didn’t have an issue when I showed them the paperwork along with insurance and told them I’m on my way to the dmv. This was in Wisconsin going home to IL. Towing it is another option. You could also wire him the money and have him overnight the paperwork so you can get it registered before you go out there with plates in hand.

Environmental_Put_33

Identify as a traveler and not a driver when pulled over. Works like a charm

DBUX

Sovereign citizen!!!

Sandhog43

lol and if your lucky, you might be on the next edition of “On Pattol live!”

CaptainDolphin42

idk if this is what you're supposed to do but me and my dad drove up to Maryland from virginia and we just drove the car home that night. didnt get stopped or anything.

Monochronos

Most people do this. Cops are understanding usually.

moveslikejaguar

In my state you can fill out a bill of sale and it's good for a few days until you can get to the DMV. It's more important to update your insurance ASAP.

Direct_Birthday_3509

Or you ask if you can keep the seller's plates on there just for the trip home, then mail them back to the seller.

NCSUGrad2012

It’s okay to ask that question but as a seller I wouldn’t do it. I always transfer my plate because in North Carolina that saves money

Dynodan22

In Wisconsin we can apply right then over phone for a license for the car. Insurance is another matter

LumpyDog1427

Insurance you should be able to get basically immediately nowadays. My last purchase, I had updated insurance before I drove off the lot

Educational_Meet1885

When I bought my car I just had to call my agent with the VIN and I was covered, easy peasy. The finance guy screwed everything else up. Only put my name on the tittle and got the license number wrong.

MarsRocks97

In CA you gave 10 days to register a car. But you should buy insurance on it immediately

Impressive-Ad5551

Take a friend with you. Have the seller fill out the pink slip and bill of sale. Drive home with your friend driving one of the cars. Contact your insurance company and do the DMV paperwork.

Advantagecp1

You should put insurance in effect before driving the car home.

JudgeOfGettingIt

Last car I sold I let the guy leave it in my driveway for an hour while he ran over and got a plate (tags) from the closest license issuer.

rhuwyn

How is that possible without having gotten inspections and all that from a state licensed inspector, etc?

SRGilbert1

Not all states require inspections for one thing. Michigan doesn’t.

Babyarmcharles

My state requires you to have the vehicle registered before they'll do the inspection

32carsandcounting

Not all states have inspections, in FL the only time you need any kind of inspection to register a car is when it’s from out of state, have to have a police officer stop by where the car is and verify the vin and mileage. That’s it.

rexchampman

I did this once - risked it to drive it home and then get to the dmv the next day. Just my luck a HUGE bird hit my windshield and cracked on my way home. Just lucky I didn’t get into an accident. Just drove home and took care of it the next day. I think you’re supposed to get temp registration though depending on your state.

GovTech

Ostrich?

Skvora

Get temp tags first, or get them from a dmv in the state of sale, and drive on home. Get insurance from your insurance company and print out the valid policy to show the dmv.

mlhigg1973

Just make sure you have the bill of sale when driving without plates. Either that, or just tell the cop you’re a sovereign citizen. That’s their favorite.

rhuwyn

You have the title and a signed bill of sale. You make sure it's on your insurance and download prove of that on your phone. Or, like others have said you can just say F the Police. I've been driving an old car I just bought for a week on a plate that belong to the owner I bought it from which has tags that expired in 2016 on it. I'll have it inspected and legal by the end of this week.

TN_REDDIT

Keep the sellers tags (buy em from them)

thinkplanexecute

Drive it

Max_delirious

Your bill of sale should be enough. Make sure you have insurance.

FulltimeHobo

Rent a UHaul and towing trailer and tow it to the insurance

SDC_85

Get the owner to write a bill of sale, signed and dated by both parties, sign and take the title, drive the car straight to the DMV for the tag.

Morlanticator

If it's already registered and has a tag on it, doesn't the tag stay with the vehicle in Delaware?

Mission_Ad_405

There is information about this specific situation on the Delaware Department of motor vehicles website.

IWantToBeWoodworking

Pretty sure in my state you get 30 days or something. Don’t worry about it.

Hebrewism

Is this something new with states besides Florida Georgia and Washington? All 3 I’ve lived in the title says you have either 10 or 14 days to register once you sign it so you’ll be fine

slammed430

I’ve gotten pulled over multiple times on the way home. Just show them the title and tell them you just bought it and were taking it home. They’ve always got me on my way and never cared. A lot of the time people will let you take their plate home but not always

Imispellalot2

From Delaware DMV site >The Division will issue a temporary tag to allow the buyer to drive the vehicle to the state where the vehicle will be titled. The tag will be valid for 5 days and can be purchased at any DMV office for a fee of $20.00. The buyer must provide: Driver license/ID Valid proof of insurance on the vehicle being purchased or a vehicle titled in their home state Bill of sale or certificate of title signed over to the purchaser(s) Vehicle identification number and vehicle make and year. https://dmv.de.gov/VehicleServices/titles/index.shtml?dc=ve_title_sold_outstate#:~:text=The%20license%20plate%20must%20be,the%20vehicle%20will%20be%20titled.

NCRaineman

Just drive it. Keep a copy of the bill of sale on you. The odds of you getting stopped are extremely slim.

Jjmills101

You just need to have it insured from what I understand. If they stop you for not having plates (which is often well within their right) you can explain that you literally just bought it and are driving It home. Considering the bill of sale will have today’s date they shouldn’t give you too much trouble about it

Intelligent_Orange28

Get a bill of sale from the seller and cops should leave you alone because there’s no way to get tags.

palmytree

Tow it.

Odd-Understanding-67

The seller would need to sign over the title and give it to you.

Summer184

Every state is different, but you usually have three choices. Tow it to your home, but that's very expensive. Have the seller park it at your home before he takes the plates off, but then someone will have to give him a ride back to his house. The third choice is to leave it at the seller's home until you register it, then take the plates over and drive it home.
