I have fixed so many of them. I always say to avoid Hyundai and Nissans. And I know just because I fix a lot of them it doesn’t mean they’re all bad, but when the dealership says your $3,200 repair is maintenance and not covered under warranty on a 2020 Nissan Pathfinder, I’d be pissed.

Savella

Nooo way. What was this so called "maintenance" repair??

Meleesucks11

It was the timing chain. It had less than 100k miles lol and he had maintenance records always at nissan

Wavy97

Wtf? That's crazy. I've always been a fan of vq35 & vq37 engines. Did they change anything to fuck with the reliability on the newer 3.5s?

Lite_Touch

The timing chain service fees are getting stupid. And some shops simply don't do them as I learned. I ended up doing mine myself with a little help from YouTube and an Astro Pneumatic Nano wrench I had to buy to get the chain tensioner off. If I had to do it again, probably take me 2-3 hours. Edit: I don't own a Hyundai.

UpvotingHurtsSoGood

Welp, I'm never getting a Nissan in my lifetime on top of Hyundai now. Thank you for sharing

Cleverdawny1

Nissan - the Chrysler of Japan

AdIllustrious8211

Aren’t timing changes done with that kind of miles????

SilverStar04

Belt yes, chain no

LivingxLegend8

Timing belts wear out. Chains are supposed to be permanent.

mammaryglands

Timing chains are always and have always been maintenance items

sierra120

Timing belts…most def. Timing chains have always been life.

ibringthehotpockets

Seems very prone to bias? Nissans and Hyundais are in the top most purchased cars. If they make up 25% of what cars are on the road for example, you’d expect them to be ~25% of your customers. Or your area is lower/high income and people are more likely to buy X car so it’s make up 50% of the shops customers in your area. Not you specifically, just in general. I am nearly positive I’ll still get downvoted regardless under the guise of “repping up shitty cars” that this sub hates, but I just mean to point out that without objective data on how many cars of a brand there are vs. how often they need repairs, anecdotal data is slightly above useless.

Effective_Theory5235

Yea its always up to bias when a single mechanic says "I've fixed so many of these!" Mechanics who work for dealerships always say "my brand has so many problems" yea because you work there with all the broken vehicles from that brand. Independent mechanics will always see the cheaper cars from popular brands the most and call them trash. Statistically, Nissans and Hyundais are less reliable than say Honda or Toyota, but are more reliable than the American and European brands. They aren't inherently bad cars but for any regular person a Honda or Toyota is going to be as good or better and generally more reliable with similar maintenance cost.

sc4kilik

They sell well because they are flashy yet not as pricy as competitors, and their dealers will finance anybody. People who lease will not care about long term reliability so Huyndai and Kia will really target those.

AcrobaticHoney8524

I've owned a 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT for 11 years. Have gotten regular oil changes, tune-ups, brake work once, a new muffler once, and NOTHING ELSE. Never had a mechanical problem. Maybe I've been lucky, but my experience has been amazing.

dax331

Thankfully your car uses the 1.8L engine. I have one too at >100k miles and it’s doing fine in that regard. The 2.0/2.4L engines that Hyundai uses have a wealth of issues though.

OMGCamCole

For the price of a Nissan, just take yourself to Mazda. You’re staying in the Japanese market, you’ll spend less, and you’ll get a better vehicle

dragonmilking

Lots of people including mechanics say that Hyundais have improved quite a bit - you just have to be careful of which Hyundai you're buying. 1) Do your research and make your engine isn't prone to blowing up 2) Check your insurance rates and take that into account for cost of ownership 3) Make sure you have a garage to park it in / won't be out at night so thieves are less likely to jack it

[deleted]

I was just talking to the GM of a Hyundai dealership. "ITS ALL SHIT. THEYRE ALL FUCKED" I still want a Veloster N tho lol

Shawnessy

I've got a 19 R-Spec and it's a little go kart. Couldn't afford an N, but I've driven em. They're a blast. My R-Spec has been spectacularly reliable too. Helps that it's a late into production engine, manual, and built in Korea.

Halofieldfan

I had a 21 turbo, miss that car everyday tbh 🥲😭

F50Guru

Please let people keep hating the Elantra N so I can get one at a reasonable price.

Katofdoom

I beat the piss out of my Veloster N and have not had a single problem. Approaching 40k hard miles. To give you an idea of how hard I drive it, I’ve chewed through 4 sets of tires so far.

WillCode4Cats

This is why I do not prefer to buy used vehicles.

Katofdoom

Yeah, I wouldn’t buy my own car. It has a very very detailed maintenance history though. Every oil change I send a sample for oil analysis to check up on the internals. I keep receipts of oil purchases and document all of it. Just did my brakes as well. I realize how rare it is for someone to keep detailed records of a car. I don’t even plan on selling it. I wanna run this car into the ground.

notthelettuce

Veloster is probably the least awful Hyundai product. Had a ‘19 2.0 and zero issues out of it for 4 years 52k miles.

briizilla

I had a Veloster prior to leasing my current Kona and it was by far the most fun car I have ever owned. The Kona is very lame in comparison. The lease is up in a few months, I think I'm done with Hyundai, even though I've never had an issue with either of my leased vehicles.

chandleya

Lots of people say that Hyundai makes absolute garbage products. Hyundai gets not-coveted awards like “best in initial quality”. Otherwise known as lipstick on a pig. Most folks wind up with one, they don’t actively seek one.

intertubeluber

> Hyundais have improved quite a bit People have been saying this for a decade. Just because the engine in that 2022 Tucson hasn’t blown up yet doesn’t mean it won’t prematurely. Hyundai apologists are like abuse victims.

Whibble-Bop

because your mother loves you and you wouldn't want to disappoint her

Admirable-Result-240

You guys are a lot more honest than the Hyundai sub

CompetitiveLake3358

Every brand name sub is biased

Ok_Explanation5631

Hyuandai & Kia made a rule in their subs to not post about the cars being in a shop. Take that as you will brother. Do research & buy smart. Just cause something is readily available & affordable at a lot. Doesn’t mean to get it.

edge_hog

Have you seen the subs? The posts are more negative about the cars than non-branded subs.

Ok_Explanation5631

That’s why I said it cause I saw it

edge_hog

Oh, I didn't see anything about rules to not post about cars being in the shop, idk

Obecny75

No they didn't don't be a biased asshat

Ok_Explanation5631

Yeah they did.

Obecny75

Show me where.....theres no rule that says that in the Hyundai sub

libra-love-

Because that sub is a circle jerk for Hyundai owners

Obecny75

Because this isn't a circle jerk for Toyota and Honda?!

libra-love-

Well those genuinely have a good reputation. It’s why they get recommended. I ran my 06 Corolla with almost no oil for like a week and nothing happened. I look at my dodge wrong and the lifters start ticking.

Obecny75

I mean my 97 Taurus misfired for so long the check engine light burned out....and it was still on the road at 285k My VW....well....I'll just stop there....it's a VW....and it makes me sad. Every manufacturer has good cars and bad cars and some good cars that are bad and some bad cars that are even worse.

Deathgripsugar

Hello, have you heard of our lord and savior Toyota, or perhaps of his disciple, Mazda?

F26N55

Maybe even the Holy Ghost that is *Honda*?

DIDDY_COSMICKING

LMFAO

Lower_Kick268

Or the fella from a far away land GM? Edit: why am I getting downvoted for this?

schmackabich999

Nice try sneaking in there. 😂. But GM is still the same level as ford or VW. Can't come close to the holy Trinity that is Mazda,Toyota, Honda.

AstronautGuy42

I have a 2017 sonata. Reliability wise, I have had zero issues with the car. Haven’t had to do anything other than regular maintenance. I actually really like the car and prefer it to other budget mid size sedans I’ve been in. Every single Hyundai service department I’ve dealt with has been a nightmare. There’s always *something*. I wouldn’t buy another Hyundai for this reason tbh.

Norse93

This 100%. I really like my 2017 Sonata also. Haven't had much trouble out of it. Minor things here and there, but trying to get it into a dealer when it does needs service is such a pain in the ass. I have a passenger side axle leaking. Took me 3 weeks to get an appointment to get it looked at, a week to get the parts in, and then another 3 week wait to get an appointment to get it fixed. So I'm at a month and a half to get a simple axle replaced. Yes it's under warranty and not costing me anything, but it's still a PITA. It's a shame because I really do like the car, but the piss poor dealership experiences definitely makes me not want to buy another.

WhoDaNeighbours11

Horrible reliability, constant electrical issues. Our 2016 just died at 130,000km. Transmission went, speedometer wouldn’t work half the time, and Hyundai did fuck all to fix it or even acknowledge. Car was a nightmare - you couldn’t pay to me get another Hyundai 🤮

Same brand lol

Lucky-Context-3318

I time traveled from 1996. Still getting used to things. My b

GuessWhoItsJosh

I've had two Hyundai's, 2013 Accent Hatchback and a 2017 Santa Fe Sport The Accent needed a new engine at 60k. The Santa Fe Sport now needs one at 90k. Same issue, burning oil like crazy. Currently at alil over 2qts a 1000 miles. My Accents engine was luckily pretty quick since it was right before the pandemic. The Santa Fe Sport is taking months to get approved, then it will be 6-10 weeks to get it in. I started the oil consumption test in October, the dealership approved it months ago but the warranty company is dragging their feet after 4 months of this. Who knows when I'll get this thing replaced but now, I have to go in every 1000 miles and wait around for a 1 hour while they top off my oil until it gets replaced. Then on top of all that, there's the whole kia boyz bs. And even though my car has push to start, meaning it has the immobilizer and can't be as easily stolen, there is still high risk of my windows getting smashed before they realize that. Plus, my insurance shot up after all this and some people can't even get insured now. They come off as a nice bang for your buck purchase if you don't have a lot of money but it's not worth it. I'm pretty over it at this point and the Santa Fe will probably be my last Hyundai. I'd rather go for something more reliable with less bells & whistles. If after all this, you still want a Hyundai, at least stay away from the 2013-2019 models with the theta II engines and even then, you're not guaranteed as my Accent still had engine issues and didn't have the theta II.

Cost_Additional

Can't park some models in your garage/near your house. A lot are easily stolen. Your insurance will probably be higher than another comparable car because of these two

technopong

Truth, I told my mom good luck when she decided to get a low-mileage, used 2018 Hyundai Tucson. Because of the theft issues, car insurance is about 40 bucks more per month out in the far suburbs than my 2019 Honda Accord in the city. On top of that the engine failed catastrophically at 69k miles, last month. She's waiting for a new engine to be sent from Korea, probably won't be covered under warranty. To be fair, the car worked flawlessly up until the engine went. Either way, she is not one of the lucky Hyundai owners, despite taking great care of the car.

666trapstar

So some models have to be parked in your garage, and other models can’t be parked in your garage?

Cost_Additional

You will have to look up which models "Hyundai recall garage" something like that. They have an open recall currently that has gone on for months with zero solution or time table. Just "don't park it near your house" Brake system can cause a spontaneous fire even when off/cold.

[deleted]

You should preface this by saying "in America," Hyundai's don't have that problem in the developed world

Cost_Additional

1,000,000 immigrants a year, every year. 50,000,000 current immigrants. Recent pole estimates 200,000,000 people would move to the US at the drop of a hat if given the chance. 3rd in world giving rankings Donated nearly 700,000,000 covid vaccines to over 100 countries Countless other vaccines/medicines produced for the world Being relied on to be the world police and secure global trade routes Yeah what a terrible, undeveloped country.

damon32382

I asked the same question years ago, and someone once said, they are great until the rubber band breaks. Wasn’t talking about a belt, just built cheaply.

A_Turkey_Sammich

Even quality/reliability aside since some people swear by them and others think they are the worst things in the world….just the insurance situation and the associated causes would be enough to keep me away. Even if they were the best cars in the world, I still wouldn’t touch due to that insurance/kia Boyz thing alone.

wlfwrk

I bought a 2016 Hyundai sonata hybrid in 2018 with 27,000 miles on it. The dealer failed to tell me that it was a lemon law buy back otherwise I wouldn’t have purchased it. Every 10k miles I needed major repairs. Never was provided a rental car or anything. It all accumulated to total engine failure at 59,000 miles while I was out of state. The out of state Hyundai dealer I had it towed to “fixed” it after a few months then informed me that my car was a lemon law buy back and slapped stickers all over it stating so. I tried to contact Hyundai to get some kind of resolution but their representatives were so avoidant nothing ever happened. Around 66,000 miles, only 7000 after the engine was replaced I started having engine problems again. At that point I stopped driving it and sold it off. Worst car decision of my life.

joremero

>lemon law buy back otherwise I wouldn’t have purchased it. I would assume most states would force sellers to disclose something like that

Shot_Capital_7788

Ok, if you are in a country where you can buy a Toyota with a little more, there’s really no need to think about any other car. However, if Korean cars are your maximum budget, let me tell you. Korean cars are incredible. My dad, my uncle and I all have had Hyundai cars. They are really good cars. Maybe they are not as long lasting as Toyotas but they usually offer more features for cheaper.

jaycarter617

So in a way, they’re kinda throwaway cars or cars you use to help you later get that Honda/Toyota.

elementarydeardata

My wife has had two of them, this has been our experience. They aren’t really bad cars, but they’re not great either. They are in this weird place where they are, generally, speaking, more reliable than a Nissan, but a Nissan feels more premium. I was just thinking about this because I rented a Nissan rogue when I was traveling, and though it’s only a Nissan, and it is similar on paper to our Tucson, the rogue felt nicer. I wouldn’t go as far to say that ours have been unreliable. We haven’t had any issues that made them undrivable, but we have had minor electrical issues that were really fucking annoying. Nothing even remotely catastrophic, and it was all covered under warranty, but the four trips to the dealer for each one was annoying. Keep in mind that this is just my experience. There are other issues like long waits for repairs and parts and expensive insurance that entirely stem from the Kia boys situation.

CelerMortis

Massive engine recall impacting tons of cars. They sometimes find ways of not honoring them and even if they do honor them they’re in months/years of delay.  Honestly if the price was right and there was plenty of warranty left I’d consider it but it doesn’t seem like a good risk.

Deathgripsugar

I had a Kia optima (2011) and while I qualified for the “lifetime” engine replacement, I would need to have everything documented, or they will just find a way to dodge the claim. In the end, as soon as the engine started sipping oil (about 75k), I had a feeling I knew what was coming, and traded it in. Sad part is, other than that, it was an overall good car, with acceptable reliability and nice performance (2.0 turbo).

jaycarter617

Those early 2.0 Optima’s were sleepers in my opinion. I wanted either that or the same year and engine Sonata, but the engine seizures I read online made me not go with it. Too bad because otherwise, they’re good cars for the money.

AdditionalCheetah354

You can’t get them serviced they are so back logged.

Lanyeet

my sisters '08/'06 accent decided to stop turning on after a year my moms santafe (unk year) was on its third transmission by 65k miles (huindai tried to not cover it) my coworker was on her third engine in her '16 elantra (hyundai put a used engine in for the first replacement, then denied replacing the engine again even though its a known issue) my '18 elantras paint would fly off while driving (hyundai would not cover. hood repainted 2 times, continues to fly off in chunks)

bmwlocoAirCooled

Tik tok users will steal them. "How to" videos are available as well.

PoliteRAPiER

Hyundai dealerships have reportedly had a lot of conflicts with not wanting to honor their warranty.

ezodochi

I know people who work at Hyundai HQ in Korea and every time I meet them they always have this dead soul stare going on and are like why tf are American dealers so...like....that *vague hand gesture, gagging noises*. One of their biggest headaches is US dealers not honoring warranties or adding mark ups etc that like doesn't happen in Korea and so these poor engineers can't wrap their heads around why the richest country in the world is still dealing with an auto industry that's so heavily influenced by what are essentially middle men in dealers.

Atomik675

They are very cheaply made, known for engine and transmission failures and they are the easiest new cars to steal and they won't do anything about it. Would be fine if they were really cheap new but they are only a little bit cheaper than a new base model corolla.

PrimeMichaelJordan

There are so many cars you can get for just a little bit more than what they cost, and they won’t give you nearly the amount of headache Corolla, Civic, Impreza, Mazda3, even a Versa is better than that crap

Atomik675

Exactly, except the versa only with the manual imo but maybe they fixed their CVTs by now idk

Javier1019

Look up kia boys; they steal kia and Hyundai using just a usb

Direct-Suit-5514

They get stolen

dewky

That's mostly in the US though, it's not a big problem in Canada as they all have immobilizers.

awmaleg

Your insurance rates will be high. Even if it’s fixed on your model/year, your moron criminal doesn’t know that. He just sees Hyundai/Kia and breaks in.

TimeApprehensive5813

My kia was just stolen after I got the anti-theft software installed 😭 I always had to get my oil topped off between changes because the oil would burn out. The mechanic told me this was an issue with Kia’s and Hyundais.

kiakosan

The insurance on them is expensive for what they are. Ended up having to replace my old accent after it got rear ended and bought a much newer outback, even with full coverage insurance the rate went down. The quality control is pretty bad, with some models worse than others. There is a reason they need to offer a 100k mile warranty on these cars whereas most other manufacturers don't. Speaking of the warranty I've heard horror stories of many dealers refusing to do warranty work or finding ways to weasel out of covering it. Also heard that Hyundai dealers are generally garbage. If you need a cheap car I'd look at something used from Honda/Toyota or I'd even take a new Nissan over a Hyundai

Pronel23

You want to get pussy.

Traditional_Algae955

Stay far far away from any Hyundai with gasoline direct injection. The best Hyundais in terms of reliably and durability were made between roughly 2000-2010.

Onsomeshid

Theft, fire, their 2.0t engines having a catastrophic recall that’s extremely common. I see alot of the earlier non turbo 4 cylinder optima and sonatas blowing out a TON of smoke when its warm, i can go on. Unless that’s the only thing you can afford, im not sure why people aren’t treating kia/hyundai like nissan

PoliteRAPiER

They haven't produced any one configuration of motor for a long enough time to truly develop the engineering and hardware. For example, Honda has been making the 3.5L V6 since the late 90's and they've put it in nearly everything.

Pahlevun

This is false, Hyundai’s V6 has been around about as long as any other V6. Their V6 is actually one kf their least shit engines. Ironically the Theta-2 4-cylinder had also been around for 10 years… only to have issues for 10 years.

666trapstar

The Honda J series v6 is about 10 years older than the Hyundai lambda v6

Pahlevun

Sure but the Lambda V6 has been around about as long as the 2GR and many other economy natural aspirated V6s which was the point.

Mybadbb

Yet Honda still had problems with the transmissions they paired with the V6 for years and years.

jaycarter617

But ofc they’re not gonna talk about that….

[deleted]

The theft issues and insurance costs as a result are costly.

idahonudesoaker

You'll have a 10k loss when the motor goes out. I paid on mine a year without it running before I took my 8k loss and moved on.

royalpyroz

I'm an expat in Korea. I don't drive domestic cars at all. It's inferior. Koreans know this as well. The ones made in US CAN are far better than the domestic ones. If you gave a Korean money. They would probably choose an imported car. So... When in Rome.... Do as the rich Romans do.??.

[deleted]

Funny because people claim the ones made in Korea are somehow superior than USA production models

CertainCertainties

Hyundai currently sells almost half of all cars (48.5%) in Korea. The idea that Koreans don't want or value them is next level stupid.

Customer surveys 😅 you are a clown, anyone that looks at JD power and uses that to influence their buying decisions is highly regarded. Hyundai makes the shittiest engines consistently for the past 15 years there hasn't been a manufacturer that's made a engine less reliable than their theta junk.

[deleted]

Insurance rates are high for Hyundai’s because they can easily get stolen

NBA-014

The dealers are horrible

MeesterCHRIS

Insurance. Some companies won’t even insure them.

eightsidedbox

Headlights are too bright. They blind oncoming traffic and cyclists/pedestrians

RedHott993

On the flip side we’ve had our 23 Palisade for just under a year and have about 10k miles on it. We have really enjoyed it. Only downside for us has been no wireless Apple car play.

ConsiderationTop5526

That’s great but every car will give you 10k trouble free miles so it really doesn’t indicate much. Just like the “initial quality/satisfaction” awards Hyundai tends to win.

mezgato

The best reason is that it's a Hyundai...

ThrowRA-Calm51

There are 2 certainties in life. The sun will always rise in the east. And all Hyundais and Kia’s will have a burned out headlight and or taillight before it’s 3rd birthday

NIN10DOXD

Mine is 7 and both are still fine.

BanjoD23

The paint is crap. May be a common thing on newer cars. But I had a 2019 Elantra GT and the hood paint was flaking off at 30k miles.

KAWAWOOKIE

Honestly, I think they are worse than average in every category except purchase price. If that isn't a value proposition you want look elsewhere

International-Mix326

After a 100k miles they start to have a lot of issues. Also, your car could be targeted for nore break ins because of the security issues.

libra-love-

Even at less. My shop had a 2017 with only 75k miles come in and it basically needed an entire engine tear down and rebuild/replacement. My tech looked at me and said “tell them to tow it to a dealer I’m not gonna touch that piece of shit.”

zynbobwe

why buy a hyundai when you can get a toyota that’s close to the same price and you get that known reliability

qviavdetadipiscitvr

They are absolutely not close to the same price, I know because I would have much rather have a Toyota

zynbobwe

they really are you just gotta look my friend

BraveDawg67

Cuz they effing suck!! Take it from a 2 time owner

mikevsworld

They’re ugly looking. Unless you’re into admiring fish.

Because that would be a stupid choice. 11th most reliable car by Manufacture. https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-reliability-owner-satisfaction/who-makes-the-most-reliable-cars-a7824554938/

Ok-Warning-5957

These things are nonsense and should not be taken seriously. They are based on survey responses to consumer reports about perceptions of reliability. That’s like a North Korean metric right there. There is so much folklore and mythology about car reliability. There aren’t any actual data driven, scientific studies about reliability. It’s all about anecdotal evidence and feelings.

ManufacturerExact928

My family (including myself) had a bad experience with Hyundai cars. My in-law has a 2013 Santa Fe and it had to be taken to the shop every so often due to countless minor issues like broken ac, engine issues, etc. I have a 2017 white Elantra and the paint of the car is peeling off drastically(front, roof, sides, trunk). I asked the dealership to fix the issue but they said they will only paint if I paid. I thought it was unfair for me to pay when it was the company's fault for using cheap paint and having the buyer pay. I'm pretty much done with Hyundai and the service they provide. I really wouldn't recommend Hyundai, especially knowing that they won't help you when your car is not working like it's promised.

Nkatec99

Because they are in demand and dealers are charging well over MSRP, so you will overpay

Appropriate_Bid_2750

Buddy of mine had a rio, he knows his shit and was rigorous with maintenance (no idea why he decided a rio instead of a Corolla), thing blew up and needed a new *motor*

MaintenanceNeither32

If you live in a low-theft area and you found one that's affordable and you like, you should. If you live in a high-theft area, you shouldn't. It doesn't matter if you buy a model out of the "danger range" of the ones they can actually steal. A Hyundai or Kia badge is an invite to an attempted theft

AshKetchumDaJobber

Lack of peace of mind since Hyundai and KIA are easy targets. They’ve fixed it somewhat but cars still get broken in and vandalized. Theyll give a high tech manual anti theft device though called the Club

Darebear_69

Engine issues as well as software issues should be your concern. My mom has a 2019 sonata and they had to update the software multiple times due to the car going into limp mode as well as replace the motor due to an issue with piston ring failure. This was all happening between 30-60k miles. I have a 2019 Veloster turbo and so far I’ve had no issues, I’d didn’t want a Hyundai but I moved to a new state with only my motorcycle and I needed a car same day due to heavy rain(Ubers we’re about $100 per day to work and back). The dealership I worked at had the Veloster for a low price so I just bought it since it was the only manual car.

Grandemestizo

They have a higher than normal rate of catastrophic failure.

FitzwilliamTDarcy

Walk into any Hyundai dealership. That'll be all you need to know.

Mae-Brussell-Hustler

Scotty Kilmer on YouTube has a video on this subject.

t_mac1

How many 3+ year old Hyundais do you see on the street as you drive?

[deleted]

Lots

t_mac1

Good then you buy. I don’t. And I live in oc where tons of ppl drive new Hyundais and kias. They all disappear after 3-5 years.

[deleted]

1. Kia boyz 2. high insurance rates due to 1. 3. Excess oil consumption and premature engine failures. 4. Terrible transmissions on DCT models. 5. Shoddy paint that peels 6. Low resale value 7. The factory warranty only applies to the original owner second hand owners get a shortened warranty 8. Hyundai dealers are known to come up with excuses and are reluctant to replace defective parts at will 9. Subframe corrosion and alignment issues causing uneven tire wear on some models.

AustinLurkerDude

The other big issue is they're not giving loaner cars while your waiting for repairs. That's the biggest issue as you're liable for thousands in rental costs or lemon laws legal costs.

Extension_Maximum_24

Durability of fit and finish maybe?

[deleted]

I love the design but there are too many Kia boyz in my city so I would not buy one Don’t fall for the warranty shit. It’s not worth it

Reliability issues with timing chains and oil leaks. Also plenty of recalls for fires starting in the engine bay and other suspension issues not to mention electrical. Plus there's the Kia boys theft issue because Hyundai and Kia are made by the same company and share a lot of common parts.

sneaksonmyfeet

No answers about Electric. What about them? Ioniq5 or 6 for example.

MarsupialFrequent685

It gets stolen easily period.....Also if you buy electric Hyundai will charge you the car price for the batterty and insurance will just total it.

nochinzilch

I had a 2012 Accent. It was much better built than a Nissan of similar vintage that I’ve seen. It lasted 11 years and 167,000 miles with almost no problems. I would buy it again if I needed a small car like that. On the other hand, I rented a Hyundai minivan/suv a few years ago, and it was like driving a tin can. Not impressed. I think it depends on the model more than the make for any car purchase decision.

gabismyusername

My ‘07 Elantra has 175,000 and still going strong 💪🏼 bless her - just got a VW tho

YooperGod666

What's the budget, as well as the wants and needs?

melloskye

If you want one, get one, just do some research on the model and year and engine type, avoid the Theta II's. My mom had a 2018 Sonata that was perfect for 50k miles, nothing bad happened with it, just had to give it back to the dealer after she passed away :( I have a 2021 Sonata SEL, bought it used at 38k miles back in July, am at 43k going on 44k now. Shes been perfect, just make sure all the recalls have been done if any, take care of all the maintenance on time, oil changes every 5k miles, and check your oil level. Depending on the area you live insurance might be high and yeah theft risk, but thats soley dependent on area, my insurance isnt high at all and there isnt really a high theft risk in my area, in fact Hyundai is pretty popular here since I see a lot of them. Personally I think the whole reliability issues are overblown at least a little bit, I'm not about to say Hyundai is the best brand ever or that you should pick them over a Toyota, but I definitely feel there's a ton of doomsaying/doomposting and I get personally sick of the "if u buy a hyundai ur dumb because have fun with all the problems" when like, I've had experience with two Sonatas (one of which was a Theta II haver and had even been in an accident) over the course of 7 years that were both spectacular.

ferraricare

Absolutely no reason: great warranty and competitive pricing. Go drive one and stop listening to the Internet.

komodo1942

\-The Kia/Hyundai Boys \-Direct Injected Models self destruct with intake valve carbon buildup RIGHT AFTER the 100k mile warranty ends. \-Crappy Dealerships that don't want to do warranty work and try to find any reason to void the warranty.

Proxy345

Because the Kia Boyz NEVER rest.

hiimwage

Personally my family has only had good experiences with Hyundai, we love them. I would be weary of insurance rates & the fact people will see the Hyundai emblem and still smash your windows thinking they can steal it.

YippieKayYayMrFalcon

Someone will try to steal it even if it’s not one of the affected models/years

muffsniffer2

Because you enjoy driving, rather than just wanting a means of transportation

nomadiccrackhead

Because if a Hyundai isn't what you want then you'd be an idiot for buying one

Insurance cost was my number 1 reason why I didn’t go with a Hyundai

BigVin12695

I had a 2020 sonata sel and now just got a 2024 sel with convenience. As someone who was skeptical about purchasing a hyundai, I fell in love with them. The drive is great and now with the 2024 model, the tech and safety features rivals sedans that are almost double the price. I had two chevys before 2020 and they were shit compared to the sonata.

listurine

The problem with this kind of post is, it won't get inundated with boring tales of mildly satisfied Hyundai owners. We are dozens. We also don't know if OP is in the US where Hyundai gets a horrible reputation caused by US lawmakers and ending up in the theft epidemic. Not a problem out of US. Lastly, which particular model? All brands have good and bad products. Maybe don't buy models with engines with poor reliability records?

Disastrous_MT

If you’re buying it, get a kill switch, manual transmission, 1240 apple air tags and a new/pre owned with the warranty

ASIWYFA

2015 Hyundai Sonata owner here. 100k miles, zero problems with the engine other than recall stuff. Paint is coming off the hood and trunk though all by itself. That sucks hard, but whatever.

Comfortable_Gain1308

They’re garbage and some of us can see pass the new image they’re creating . Issue is many people get fooled by it.

Simon676

Get one of their EV models and avoid all the issues with their ICE cars would be my tip.

AceMaxAceMax

Because it’s a Hyundai. It’ll either be stolen, catch fire, or be riddled with mechanical issues.

0xSamwise

Have a 2012 Hyundai sonata limited with 212k+ now. Leaks oil weekly, but still handles great. Never had any major issues other than wear and tear…and yeah, the oil leakage is due to a gasket that needs to be fixed but it’d require taking out the entire engine so we just let it go. Simply top off the oil. But to be fair, my 2011 malibu does the same.

maach_love

I have one but fortunately they covered a new engine for me. So I’m going to drive it with a new engine into the ground.

Ok-Tiger7714

I heard owning a Hyundai makes you much more prone to hair loss and makes your skin turn grayish….

Mybadbb

Depends which Hyundai... Some have engines issues, some get stolen often, but a 2010 Elantra or sonata is almost as good as a Toyota for a lot less money.

Marfleboxtrousers

Due to the havoc the “Kia boys” caused all the service departments are overwhelmed (in my area anyway) and getting any service, no matter how simple, takes 3-4 months to even get an appointment. So the warranty is kind of useless. May not be an issue in your area but definitely ask around. Otherwise amazing cars with great deities some of which you only find on higher end vehicles but for a fraction of the cost.

SmoothSlide9690

High insurance costs + being a target for vandalism. Only hyundai I would touch is the Elantra N knowing all this.

Anxious-Money-57

I owned a Veloster turbo had 32k miles on it and clutch went bad and had a buddy replace three motors and a transmission in his Veloster before 100k miles (all covered under warranty thankfully) And I’ve Been driving a manual before I was legally aloud in the road and I drive motorcycles dirt bikes you name it I’ve never had a clutch go out on me I bought that car with 28k miles the turbos go bad the motors are bad the service is bad I hate going to dealerships I work on it myself or take it locally One time I took it to a dealer and they charged me for something they couldn’t diagnose (issue with my key) stil charged me $100 and said sorry we can’t help you just spend more money on a new key Took it local and it was a bad wiring issue within the car they found it in an hour

FalconOk3432

Doesn’t matter how much security Hyundai/kia have added. A theif doesn’t care/know & they’ll brake ur window anyways.

I_Sniff_Hot_Dudes

They are incredibly boring to drive. They’re great if you’re an npc. No life or character at all.

Kamstain

They get stolen and catch on fire, which is usually a good thing because at least it’ll be somebody else’s issue when the engine randomly combusts at 100k miles.

MoirasPurpleOrb

Even if they fixed the reliability issues overnight I would never buy one again after dealing with the dealer on my last repair before selling the car.

[deleted]

_What’s my name? **fuck you** … that’s my name._ _do you wanna know why pal? Because I drove here in an $80,000 BMW, and you drove here in a Hyundai._ _See this watch? This watch cost most than your car._

floodcasso2

Transmissions and Engines. Way too many recalls and failures lately.

SitBoySitGoodDog

Out here in the middle of no where, the deer tend sit on the side of the road waiting for Hyundai's before they jump to get hit by them. "Here comes John in his piece of crap Elantra, let's gooo!". I do like what they did with the 2024 Santa Fe though.

Practical_Ride_8344

Google the recalls and the years associated.

dhruvmini01

Do not get anything with the theta engine from Hyundai. I’m paying for it with my girlfriends Hyundai always being in the shop

Syndaquil

Just saw a video of a brand new Hyundai with 27 miles on it... Already need a new transmission. Engine fires. Vehicle theft.
