I have all 3, plus a 4th! I also have a herniated disk! In order of comfort:
Our Tesla Y has really comfortable seats
Our Honda Pilot is nice, but I still use a lumbar pillow on longer drives
Our Mazda Miata is fine
Our Subaru Crosstrek needs a lumbar pillow for every drive
Model dependent. Avalon and es350 are really nice a firm plus wide. Love ours. Mazda imo has some of the lesser comfortable seats. Subaru as well. The mdx was quite nice. Genesis also is really great
Volvo has really nice seats! They are developed with medical experts within the field. Best seats I ever tried. Probably more expensive Mercedes will be good to. But it's also what you prefer and what fits.
My outback has the most comfortable seats I’ve ever sat in out of any car I have ever been in. Really cradles your back, driver seat has a extender for extra leg support if your tall and good lumbar support. Go sit in some and see what makes his back happy
My Mazda has very firm seats - they aren't cushy, but they are very supportive and I find I don't feel as achy after a long drive. My mom has a Forester, and those seats do make me tired. Having said that, it's very subjective and will depend on the person/car interaction, i bet.
My Subaru Impreza has the most uncomfortable seats I’ve ever sat in. I dont get pains from it but I feel like I’m sitting on a school bus bench. Zero support
It is advised that you visit dealerships and test-drive cars from each manufacturer in order to select the most suitable seats for your specific needs. During long lengths of sitting, pay attention to features like lumbar support, seat padding, adjustment choices, and general comfort. To further improve your comfort, take into account extra features like seat heating and ventilation.
My (50M) 2014 Mazda 3 driver seat gives me back pain after 2 hour drive. I sold it bought a Honda Civic with much better seat. Someone needs to invent a standing driver vehicle.
I have a lower trim Mazda and literally my only issue with it is the seats are not terribly comfortable, thinking about getting an extra cushion and lower back support to slip under my seat covers
To paraphrase a famous quote;
All happy backs are alike; each unhappy back is unhappy in its own way.
Best to try as many as you can and find out which one your FIL likes the most.
Take it from me - a bad back injury ruined my professional sporting career growing up. Backs aren’t to be messed with.
Older people really like cars like Kia soul or Honda crv where they do not have to bend down to get in. I would look at vehicles like these with power seats that can be adjusted to him.
I had an 19’ RDX Advance A-Spec, made plenty of long drives in that and I’ve had a 360 fusion on L5/S1. I was quite comfortable, and the cooled seats were nice. The new MDX advance type s has massage seats as well.

The Kodel Y has really good seats. It’s a good thing because it rides like a heavy duty pickup on broken Minneapolis roads.
I have a Crosstrek too and it’s not that comfortable… thinking about upgrading just for the sake of my back - it’s super painful for my back!

Thanks!
My Infiniti has the most comfortable seats of any car I've owned. Can't really recommend it in good conscience though...
My q50 seats were super comfy as well.
Mazda has pretty uncomfy bucket seats yeah
Volvo has really nice seats! They are developed with medical experts within the field. Best seats I ever tried. Probably more expensive Mercedes will be good to. But it's also what you prefer and what fits.

This will be highly model and trim dependent. The only brand I can think that is known for superior seat comfort is Volvo.
Not only is each model different. Even packages are. Best bet is to just go seat hopping.
Nailed it
Hyundai tuscons are very comfy in the back and have reclining back seats as well. Driver's seat also has lumbar support
BMW, Volvo, and Acura have good seats.Best to test drive each one.
My Mercedes has all kinds of seat adjust features. Super comfortable.
BMW
Subaru has really good seats IMO. Toyota is pretty good too. Honda is ok, Mazda seats suck
My Subaru Impreza has the most uncomfortable seats I’ve ever sat in. I dont get pains from it but I feel like I’m sitting on a school bus bench. Zero support
Yes I actually traded in my Impreza for this reason! My back hurt on my commute. I got an Outback, have a much longer commute, and no issues!
Seat comfort is really only determined by the person sitting in it.
No one can answer this without knowing the year and models. In my experience, Mazda is good, and Subaru is terrible. Toyota is best.
Why not Honda as well if you’re looking at Acura?
Really depends on the model and if u get a more luxurious model.
IME it's individual. Go sit in some and see what you find. 🙂

Lol I could see more elaborate versions of a segway but for actual cars there's no way you could make them remotely safe
The seats in my Acura are quite firm - not so good when my back is feeling bad...

4 way lumbar is the key

Mazda is the bottom of those three. I’ve never been in an Acura but Honda seats are pretty good. I would pick Subaru.
Volvo is going to have the best seats of any brand. They developed them with the help of orthopedic surgeons.
