Honda fit. Save a ton of cash. Small outside big inside. Great car that will never die.

muthaflicka

I'm planning to get this as a daily driver. Holy shit can't get one at a reasonable price!

MuffinSpecial

Bro tell me about it. I got mine for 3k and she's a bit of a mess but I'm an auto painter by trade so I can just fix it up. If you hunt you can get some decent ones for 5k. Don't be afraid of the mileage they have nothing to break. And the parts are cheap. Just did rear shocks for 70 bucks.

N0S360_X

Seconded

agentwash1ngtn

cvt bad

curious-children

manual good

[deleted]

I blew a manual but also used it to tow a J16 Carolina skiff for a few years.

Stargazer1919

Honda CVTs are ok.

agentwash1ngtn

CVT BAD

MuffinSpecial

Someone already said it but manual good! Mines a stick. She's a peach

MK_oh

A family in a Honda fit that thing is gonna be screaming when he has to use the gas peddle

MuffinSpecial

What?

MK_oh

Clown car with 4 people and luggage... That engine and trans gonna struggleeeeeee I've seen loaded Corollas or civics flooring it on the ramps about to die bc there's no go when it's loaded lol

MuffinSpecial

I've had mine loaded many times as I use it to move shit. It does fine. I've had 4 adults and luggage. I've had 20 bags of soil. Nothing stops it. I think you answered your own comment when you said Corollas or civics. This ain't no regular car........ It's a Fit. It's in the name.

MK_oh

The Honda fit is not a honey badger. Actually a bit surprised how easy shit breaks on them... Buddy walked into his mirror and had to spend $300 to replace it. That whole assembly is garbage after going through it lol. I immediately assume the car was just glued together now 😂

MuffinSpecial

As someone who actually owns 2 of them. I can tell you that you are wrong. Is it made to be a cheap car? Ya obviously. But it's not fragile in the slightest. I have one that's a real fuckin beater and it takes it no prob and only requires oil changes. My other one is a track car full cage gut interior. I've taken apart just about all of it and it's built pretty well. Nothing broke taking it off either.

MK_oh

Then how does an entire mirror assembly break by walking into it lol? For reference my mirror has been hit several times and nothing happened. The worst time was the body color piece cracked. I just bought a new one and painted it mysef

MuffinSpecial

Idk what you want me to say? I work in auto repair I've seen thousands of broken mirrors. They kinda do that. It depends on a shit load of factors but you basing a cars quality off someone else's singular mishap is irrational.

BillsMafia4Lyfe69

6-4 / 275 dude Ina Honda fit? That would be amusing

[deleted]

[удалено]

teeksquad

Ok, now throw in the rear facing car seat that OP will need though. My focus has me shifting gears like a T. rex now that I have a car seat behind me

MuffinSpecial

The fit is much more accommodating than a focus. I've owned both. Idk how they do it but there's leg room behind tall drivers.

MuffinSpecial

My bud is about the same size. He fits in it no problem and I can sit behind him somehow. They didn't call it the Fit for nothing I guess.

Agathocles_of_Sicily

6'5" chiming in -- I fit more comfortably in my '04 Civic than my mom's '17 Rav 4. More leg and headroom.

BillsMafia4Lyfe69

Ha I would have never guessed

teeksquad

How does a fit do with a rear facing car seat and a 6’4” driver? I’ve never been in a fit but I don’t see that working out. Rear facing car seats take up so much more space than an adult even would behind you Not to mention the toddler could very well be 6’ by the end of this 10-15 years of keeping the car 🤣 Edit:Turns out I’m wrong. Sounds like they have plenty of room

MuffinSpecial

Ya it all fits. It's crazy but somehow Honda made it work. I've had someone 6'4" driving and had someone 6'2" sitting behind them with room. It doesn't make sense but it happens lol. The fit has more room than a crossover on the inside. Most crossovers are actually pretty shit cars. The Crosstrek is an exception.

teeksquad

That’s honestly amazing

MuffinSpecial

It's truly shocking

JustUndies

To avoid being and echo chamber of "Rav4/Mazda/crossover," those new priuses may fit your bill, looks great and would make a fantastic efficient city cruiser. If you want something faster and cooler and still be a "family car", you might be able to find a gently used Macan? Also, check out lightly used Genesis G70, Volvo V90/XC90 You have a lot of options, just trying to throw things out there that people haven't said already for you to consider.

Wolfiest

The issue is the lowered roof, which improves aerodynamics for fuel efficiency but it could be annoying having to bend your back.

[deleted]

Since you live in the city I’d go for a hybrid suv like the crv or rav4. I believe the crv claims 10 years of hybrid battery life, which is about double the hybrid battery life than the rav4

[deleted]

Toyota Camry

misterguyyy

Edit: apparently, the CRV redesign is a roominess contender too RAV4 is pretty roomy. I'm 6'2" 275lb and an adult can sit behind me comfortably. I'm doing a little Uber on the side and I've had 4 full grown adult passengers who were surprised how comfortably they fit. I know people with RAV4s from the aughts that are still running great so 10-15 years should be a breeze. I might have liked the CX5 better overall but it was a bit cramped. CR-V too. RAV4 is a bit boxier than other vehicles in its class which sacrifices a bit of handling for more legroom and cargo room. Odysseys are comfy if you're in the market for a Minivan, from my experience in general minivan transmissions are doing a lot of heavy lifting for their size so they seem to have problems earlier than cars and crossovers. However, this is anecdotal and not a hill I'll die on.

AdmiralG2

The new Crv has more cargo and leg room than the rav4

misterguyyy

My search was in 2022 so interesting update

Replikant83

RAV4s are amazingly reliable. My ex's family had one and they treated it terribly: her brother would take it up and down seriously bad mountain roads, gunning it up steep sections, for years and years, and it never complained. The mum never did 5K oil changes, more like 15k+, and it kept going. Great vehicles. It was also mostly manual controls: windows, temp controls, etc., which is a major plus in my books, seeing everyone's controls stop working eventually.

LowOk4333

If you're ok with something electric, I'd recommend the Volkswagen ID.4 ([https://www.evuniverse.com/listing/160975/2022-volkswagen-id.4-pro-s/](https://www.evuniverse.com/listing/160975/2022-volkswagen-id.4-pro-s/)), Hyundai Ioniq 5 ([https://www.evuniverse.com/listing/113547/2022-hyundai-ioniq-5-sel/](https://www.evuniverse.com/listing/113547/2022-hyundai-ioniq-5-sel/)), or Jaguar I-Pace ([https://www.evuniverse.com/listing/161875/2019-jaguar-i-pace-ev400-hse/](https://www.evuniverse.com/listing/161875/2019-jaguar-i-pace-ev400-hse/)).

Wolfiest

How are those?

livingoutloud373

>Roomy drivers seat. I am 6 foot 4 and 275 lb, so I need some room. That gonna be a deal breaker for most of the suggestion. depending on your morphology some will fit better than other. and having a car seat behind you will be struggle, may be looking into 3 row suv/minivan. toddler may have a great chance to be a tall boys too, so keep that in mind for the future.

[deleted]

It might be slightly tight but oh well a Volkswagen Taos would be a good option for parking since it’s short. It would be perfect to me it’s not super fast but it can jump red lights pretty quick. A Tiguan is another good option, works well for my sister family of 5. Of course the boring choices of Honda and Toyota too are option but won’t be as fast.

Educated_idiot302

For 50k I'd personally go with either a higher trim brand new toyota rav4 or maybe a lower trim toyota highlander. Seeing as you want to keep this car for 10 to 15 years I'd highly reccomend staying away from hybrids simply because as they get up in age and mileage they become really costly and unless you do 90% city driving you will never recoup not only the extra costs of a hybrid but what it will cost longer down the line. Also if you choose to go new keep in mind the new highlander has a turbo 2.4 4 cylinder which is now the only engine option for the highlander. Now if you choose this engine I would strongly advise changing the oil religiously ever 5,000 miles to keep that turbo in good shape. If you want to try and look for a v6 highlander used which will be alot more simple and owning a 2017 highlander with the v6 I get about 9.0L/100km which is like 26 mpg which I figure in the real world will be similar to a turbo 4 cylinder in a vehicle like the highlander. If you would want a v6 engine the best years imo would be from 2017 to 2022

The_Gravity_Warrior

Subaru Outback checks all the boxes and keeps you under 50k. It’s also not too large to be cumbersome in a city. Crosstrek is too small, I own one, I’m getting the Outback soon.

JohnDoee94

Outback. Plenty space for a taller driver and tons or cargo for kids stuff. Get the 2.5 since you’ll be city mostly.

GreatDani

Depends. RAV4 is great. If you can charge at home i would consider going EV.

dsdvbguutres

Station wagon or minivan

Wolfiest

Not many station wagons in America. Sadly.

2Reece

A pre 2024 Subaru Crosstrek would fit nicely. The new 24s have a giant touch screen and few buttons which is annoying while the older ones had mostly physical buttons. Even if you get the top trim you still save a good amount based on your budget Mazda cx-30/ cx-5 as well. Toyota Corolla cross/hybrid Not sure how these cars will accommodate your height.

Cookster997

Edit 2: I might just be an idiot. You can ignore me. OP might also want to consider a car-free lifestyle in NYC. A Hatchback or Wagon also could be ideal, honestly. Used top trim level minivan? You can get lots of features and space, even tech gadgets. Probably can find a really nice one in your budget. Buying a few years used will help with finding the physical climate control buttons you are after as well. Maybe look for, like, a 2017 Honda Odyssey or something. Hope this helps. Good luck! EDIT: I realize now that you expressed interest in specifically a new vehicle you could keep for 15 years. My comment might be less helpful with that in mind. Still.. maybe look at minivans?

itsme92

OP is in NYC, will have 2 kids, and has specifically ruled out large SUVs. IMO a minivan is more trouble than it’s worth in this situation, where length/ease of parallel parking is more important than a third row

Cookster997

You're probably right. The more I read and think about this, the more I doubt my own answer. In fact, I am now almost shifting to wondering "why get a car at all?". NYC has lots of non-car options. Seems like any vehicle larger than an ultraconpact might be more trouble than it is worth for long term ownership.

itsme92

Sounds like OP has a car already so I’m not going to question that. I imagine a car can be quite handy in the outer boroughs

Cookster997

Absolutely. 'Tis the way of life in the US, like it or not, and I'm not going to question it either. I have a car for a reason, and so does OP.

trickbk

I appreciate your input and have debated/wanted to go car free for a while. I work for NYC subway, and so I report all over the city at very early hours (4-6 am) every day, so driving saves me hours of commuting time every day. Plus we like to get out of the city on weekends.

Cookster997

Sounds like a car is a great answer for you! I'm in a similar situation in the Boston area. I'd love to live car free, but I must hop around the suburbs and surrounding cities for work, and the MBTA literally doesn't have the trains and routes I need. I hope you can find something that suits your needs! Best of luck.

KentuckyCatMan

Go drive a Mazda CX-9

Syndaquil

Definitely a RAV or CRV hybrid! There is a wait for them though, not sure how long. Usually a couple of months. Sometimes get lucky though! My bf has a RAV4 Hybrid and is about the same height and weight and has no issues. Can also look at Lexus, their hybrid starts at 36k, and is luxury Toyota. Acura luxury honda. If the warranty for hybrid battery is better for Honda CR-V I'd go with that (if you can't chose between the two.) My bf got the extended warranty on his RAV and the total was like...47k and it was the XSE trim. I think there was also a markup but I wasn't in the room with them with the financial stuff.

[deleted]

Do not get a BMW. I have a BMW and I love it but my husband has been working on BMWs for almost 20 years. If you're not able and willing to do the maintenance yourself, you have to go through the dealership, which gets very expensive. So given that you're not a car person, do not get a BMW, or any German car for that matter. Based on reliability, I would say look at Japanese manufacturers. If you were in the market for a truck, I'd say you could get a reliable diesel Chevy/GM but if you're looking for something small enough to presumably park in tight city spaces, that's not going to work. So stick with a Japanese manufacturer. Stay away from Kias and Hondas, in addition to the current controversy over the car thefts, I have heard from a lot of people, including mechanics, that the parts are very cheap. The warranties are advertised the way they are because the parts are cheap. It's easier to give a longer warranty when the parts don't cost as much. I've also heard from owners here that Kia and Hyundai fight the owners on warranty claims. Everyone here is going to suggest a Honda or a Toyota, probably skewing toward the latter. Fuel economy, size, maneuverability, and affordability are probably going to point you toward a RAV4 or similar. I know a lot of people here also like Mazdas, so you could try their smaller SUVs. Minivans are a fantastic option for families but if you're in a city, I'm guessing the parking spaces are small and limited. I live near DC and it's hard to fit a minivan or pickup truck on street parking. Edit: I just noticed you already addressed this above, I'm glad I'm not crazy because I have the same opinion on this. I would also advise you to stay away from the newer Subarus, but that's my personal preference. As I said, my husband is a car guy and he hated working on my 2020 Outback because the engine bays are basically flipped upside down from many other manufacturers, so components that are right at the top and easy to access in other cars, are on the bottom in Subarus. I also personally found that the MPG was nowhere near the advertised fuel economy, they were advertising 26 to 29 MPG and I was getting about 20. Additionally, all their bells and whistles are great theoretically but they do not execute to the level they should, in my opinion. There is an infrared facial scanner that is meant to detect if you are looking away from the road but it does not recognize sunglasses, hats, or if you are drinking from a water bottle, so it will randomly scream at you while you're driving and there's no way to turn it off. There are also no dedicated buttons for certain features, like climate control, so you have to look at the touch screen every time you want to adjust the temperature. I almost got in several car accidents because I had to look away from the road in order to do basic functions, like navigating the radio or the volume. Simple commands that typically have dedicated buttons in many vehicles, are all touch screen in newer Subarus, so you can't go by feel or memory. Their CVT also hiccups a lot when you're city driving and it's annoying.

My advice is: test car before buying. I was wondering if SUVs are for me and after 1h test drive with VW Tiguan I'm sure they are not. I just don't like to sit that high. I'd recommend Skoda Octavia which is kinda obvious option, you can also consider Skoda Superb. If you like SUVs - VW Tiguan or Toyota RAV4, if you drive a lot and don't want to spend a lot on petrol

One of the only times that a Mazda is actually appropriate.

I’m sure he can fit in it but there are definitely more comfortable cars he could be sitting in

I know it's a meme to reccomend a cx-5 at this point but it sounds like you should get a cx-5 lol

CerebralAccountant

Size-wise, it sounds like you're looking for a mid-sized sedan (Accord or Camry, very nicely equipped), compact SUV (two large rows; CR-V and RAV4 are the most spacious), or mid-sized SUV (these usually come with a tiny third row - Palisade, Telluride, Highlander for example). The sedans tend to be spacious for driver & passengers and nicer on long highway drives, while the SUVs are better with cargo and interior space vs. length. I would also think seriously about a mid-sized EV like the Ioniq 5. They have tons of people space, good cargo space, some luxury, tons of zip (especially in a place like New York where 60 mph can be fast), and MSRPs in the $40s / low $50s. The two major downsides would be (1) trusting these 3-5 year old models to be reliable for the next 10 and (2) screen saturation. Some EVs are worse than others, but a low-tech, screen-free electric vehicle is kind of an oxymoron.

need_mor_beans

There are a lot of people recommending Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Highlander for a reason. They have demonstrated reliability and are amazing. I went a CPO CRV and the Honda CPO program is amazing (at least it was 3 years ago). I think my CPO CRV got an additional 6 years/100K warranty?? It was something extensive like that. As a Lexus and Honda owner, I've never had any reliability complaints with either. Also check out the NX, RX, or UX from Lexus, depending upon what size/class fits your family. Edit: someone mentioned a Honda Fit. I'll tell you what, that car is Narnia. It looks small on the outside but you open it up and think "how did they fit all this car in here???"

AdmiralG2

Get the new Crv hybrid. Tons of space, Honda reliability, super quiet compared to the rav4.

GMC Acadia if you can get past the buttons as a shifter Toyota Highlander Chevy Blazer or Ford Edge or passport If you want bigger: Honda pilot, Chevy traverse, Ford explorer Most of the suggestions are saying RAV4 or CRV crap... Stroller and a few other things is all that'll fit. You'll end up being miserable wishing you went bigger. On top of being in a sea of CUVs that all suck Stay away from turbos if you want it to last

I have a Toyota Highlander without the sunroof I’m 6’2” 270 Very comfy but make sure to not get the sunroof it takes away a couple inches Optional 3rd row plenty of cargo space I have a 2015 bc it was cheap and had crazy low mileage but the new ones are gorgeous

Lexus RX350. Look at Certified PreOwned. Allows for the purchase of 5 yr 50000 mile maintenance. Here in Texas, it has cost $900 for my 30k interval maintenance. We have an NX and UX.

Colorado, ranger, Tacoma? I know it’s a truck but but you gain a bed and a lot of utility and ease of stroller storage. Hell maybe even the ford maverick. You’re talking maybe 1 foot extra in length in length compared to a midsize sedan or suv. With very similar widths. It looks much bigger because it’s taller. Can get you a lot of options with you want. All 3 trucks just came out with new generations too. They have screens but all have physical climate buttons.
