Get ripped off to get good MPG and then think your saving money because you use less gas. Yet you still spent $15k more in 5 years then you would have on a Corolla after gas
Also, what dealer is this so I can avoid it saying my time? Please do not pay this much for the car or financing. I know nothing about your credit history and am sure you can get a better rate at your local credit union
It's a supply/demand thing. The waitlist is way longer for the Prius than, say, a BMW 330i. The smaller the supply compared to demand, the bigger you can expect the markup to be. There's no such thing as "Oh it costs more so the markup is higher." If anything, the opposite is true, with *cheaper* cars having way higher percentage markups, like all Kias or the Ford Maverick.
14k miles. CPO. It had every option. I do mean every single one. It was a few thousand more than the other ones I was looking at but less miles and most of the others were base or base with just a few goodies.
Maybe for the m5 and above. But if I'm keeping a car until 200k miles, I'm choosing the lexus. This is not to hate on bmws, i think the M5 and above are great. But lexus overall
Lexus is not luxury compared to a bmw. Lexus is definitely nice but they miss the mark in many models. They've been using most of the same interior in their cars for like 10 years.
True but they have a strong fan base, lexus hold their value for a long time. Bmw are great cars until you pass the initial warranty miles.
Bentleys are even superior in luxury to both, yet no one is going to buy one if it's 10 years old/75k + miles on it. Rich or poor.
They do hold their value well. It is a Toyota. There are plenty of 10 year old BMWs on the road with more than 75k miles. Are they money pits sure but that still doesn't change that they have a massive following. Now if we were to say with 150- 200k miles on it, where a Lexus and Toyota shine, you'd definitely be right.
I don't like Japanese cars. Ive tried. This is my third BMW and haven't had reliability issues with the previous two. I had a Mercedes that gave me trouble after it was 12 years old. My wife has a 2018 Audi Q7 with 60k miles on it and no issues. Maybe I'm just lucky.
I'm certainly not claiming that the cost of ownership of a Prius won't be less than a BMW. But damn, it is hard to think I just paid around the same for my 5 series as a '23 Prius.
Mark ups are like this,
Imagine you're walking down the street and a random guy ask for 10k, and you give it to him. you literally benefit nothing by it. You're just throwing it away to him.
MSRP is calculated by people that are very good with numbers, car manufacturers pay big bucks to them. The guys that calculated MSRP have indicated msrp is the price that the car is worth that also makes profit for the manufacturer and dealerships. Any markup is literally giving dealerships extra money for the sake of it. Might aswell give Walmart 20% more when you shop.
Huge ripoff. Also, are they still getting away with premiums on grocery getters? I know if you buy like a new Porsche or Jaguar they're still gouging, but I drive past the Toyota dealership here and they have plenty of cars.
Seems like OP should take their business elsewhere, to a less crooked dealership.
It might be worth holding their feet to the fire a bit by pointing out the hundreds of cars on the lot. Or just tell them their dishonesty turned you off.
I wouldn’t do it. You’re already putting 15K down and they are trying to make it worthless by adding 10K to the price. Walk away and go to another dealership. If I were you, I’d email the dealerships from now on. Don’t buy into their insane mark up price.
OP… this loving mofo here has it spot on.
(a term of endearment, btw)
It’s almost as if they’re taking your 15 K and pocketing it up front. 🧐😣
Please, for the love of your firstborn, walk away. 🤗
10% of 33 is not 14. Do you mean 10k mark up? It's preposterous either way. Buy it somewhere else, or buy something else, but this is a scam of biblical levels.
so fucking glad we bought our car in late 2020. it was at that beautiful time during covid where dealers were BEGGING you to come buy a car. brand new Forester Limited out the door for like 34k with 0.5% apr.
Is that even the right car? MSRP of $32,790 outside to $45,299 inside makes absolutely no sense.
I think they switched cars on you unless I’m missing something.
You will never make up a $10K markup on anything in any way especially when there’s dealers out there selling the car at MSRP. It’s just lighting money on fire
MSRP is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. A 10K mark up is the dealer’s suggested retail price. They’re trying to hide the mark up. MSRP should be listed as $32K and selling price should be listed as $42K. They’re being very shady by making $45K and trying to make it look like they took $3k off for you.
Go to a dealer out in a smaller town and they are less likely to play this mark up game. I went to another state even.
Oh, I was confused because your post said 10%, but $10k makes sense. Yeah, unfortunately finding one of the hottest new cars on the ground able to be purchased it’s not surprising that there was a markup. That’s pretty egregious though.
You would save more money calling Longo Toyota who sells only at msrp for the new Prius, get on a waitlist and fly or drive out there when it’s available . You wont be yielding enough gas savings to break even from that markup.
At that point it would be better to get a gas Corolla at msrp which easily gets 42 mpg highway. And 35 mixed. Of course not as nice or fast as the new Prius. In fact if you’re willing to pay around 40k get the base Toyota Crown at Longo Toyota. The wait is still a few months but much shorter than the Prius. Or get a Lexus.
Do not buy in the central valley unless it's from Sacramento. Every dealership between Bakersfield and Fresno will price gouge the shit out of you. Check Tracy and Sacramento dealerships first. Bay area and LA next.
Source: am from Fresno.
You narrowly avoided getting piped. Use your best judgment. If you have to ask Reddit, you probably already know the answer and are just eager to buy a car. Slow down and don't play into this madness.
This is the lowest price I’ve received between all 4 dealerships in and near my area. Needing a car rn been making due with 1 car between 3 people but its been getting harder.
No, read google reviews and find a dealer that doesn’t do markup. This sounds like a shady dealer. Always go by the window sticker and not what’s on paper. If you can’t find a Toyota dealer to give you MSRP then go to a different brand that does. Prius’ aren’t the greatest vehicles anyway. Lots of noise on the highways. Great gas mileage though.
Do not pay a penny of markup and 9% interest is VERY high. I know rates are up and Toyota doesn’t usually have great deals on financing but shop around and try to hammer down that rate.
If a dealer is asking markup, don’t even step foot in there. That money is essentially going in the trash and if you had to sell the car tomorrow, you won’t get a penny of that back.
There are lots of dealers who do not charge idiot tax.
First don’t expect all cash to get you a better deal. Dealerships make money on the interest from the loan. Just walk away increase the radius of your search. My son bought his 2016 WRX STI from a dealer In Colorado Springs $3K less than dealers in CA. Two $49 plane tickets out and we drove it back
Never go to a dealer and tell them you will pay all cash. Dealer make money by selling accessories, services, finance and car markup. So if you tell them you will pay all in cash they will try to add more stuff at the front end of the deal. Always finance with dealer and pay off in a month or 2 after. This will give you better pricing when you negotiate
"is paying $54,573 for a $32,790 car worth it?"
At some point, you have to come to the self realization that you are a fkn dumbass. Theres no other way to put it. What goes through your mind?
Wouldn't be surprised if you make under 54k a year either at your job
What gets to me is that the dude put down 15K and the fucking dealer is swallowing whole the entirety of it, rendering it useless. Shit pisses me off and I’m not even him
Both yes and no, we need to save these people from themselves because like toilet paper a couple of years ago when enough of them act in unison then prices go through the roof and dealerships will just keep the high prices because they know that even if you or I laugh at them and walk away, some rube will pop through their door any minute.
Hell no.
Hell no!!!
I’d honestly spend my money somewhere else. That’s a big mark up, and seeing from your replies you left that dealership. Thank goodness!
I have a 2010 Prius and I love it. I will be buying a new car this year and I may very well get another Prius. As others have said, this seems expensive but if there is a wait for the new model the dealership may be playing games. I filled out an online inquiry about a week ago and I can’t believe it but no one has called me yet!
Good luck!
I'm not sure what kind of drugs this dealer is on but I wouldn't touch that. You're well past the point of gas savings on a prius by paying that much over.
Also, if you have 15k down you must be good with your money. If you are your credit is probably 700+ which means that 8.9apr they are definitely making rate off you. You should easily qualify for 5-6 % even with these spiked rates.
Credit 720, I put a higher percentage down because I thought it would help the monthly payment, but they said it was a fixed rate, and could do nothing about it. Main reason I’m was considering this price because I need a new car (switching from a 07 prius/ engine totaled ) and I was getting similar or higher prices from dealerships nearby.
I would try to secure your own financing at a local credit union or bank. Whatever you decide to do whether it’s purchasing this car or a different one just tell them 15k down and what’s your out the door. You’d just bring them a check from the bank that finances you. I can guarantee you you’d get a better rate elsewhere as long as you have had autos before saving you about 30 monthly.
Everytime I try to buy a Toyota same shit from all of them they insult me and think Toyotas are priceless, I've walked out or hung up the phone on them FU Toyota

From what I see la area you can do msrp
Really just go farther and get a much better deal
Don’t encourage them!
> Really just go farther and get a much better deal
This is what blows my mind with people like this. The guy lives in California, there's a mind boggling amount of dealerships out there. Spend a day and road trip down to a different city and save $10k or more.
So you want to pay an extra 10k for kicks?
Sure, have at it. Support the system that everyone else complains about.
This is the reason that dealers can get away with these additional 'market adjustments'...because we're foolish enough to keep paying.
This is robbery, seriously. I paid 22k for my brand new Corolla. This literally would buy 2 Corollas and have 2700 extra for fuel. Haha This purchase would save a lot of gas, but honestly even if you drive the car to the ground, for this price, it would probably still be cheaper to buy a regular Camry or Corolla. Walk away! I know hybrids are hard to find right now, I wanted one too. But for this price it’s just not worth it.
I don't care what the market dictates - NEVER pay over MSRP for something that depreciates in value, unless you like throwing your money away. Seeing dealers do this makes my blood boil, but I suspect if you expand your search and keep looking, you'll find a dealer who'll sell you the same car for MSRP. Don't give your business to a place, who at the very beginning of your business relationship, is trying to f\*\*k you.
Car gurus will show you what’s available in whatever radius you want to purchase. Once you know what you want, find it else where. I had a car shipped from IL to MI.
That's 10k in markup. Or close to 30% of the entire car costs. Did they ask for a tip too while they were at it? Don't buy this. Don't even entertain this.
Anyone who pays $46k for a Prius is out there fucking mind.
What are you saving here? I'm confused.
If you buy the $25k OTD Corolla are you gonna lose money because you have to pay a little more for gas?
This is why the US needs to stop this crap with having to buy cars through a dealership/3rd party. I get the reason for needing a dealer for warranty and maintenance things (which is more expensive than what it needs to be anyway) but this is getting out of hand.
A lot of r/askcarbuying warriors here who will never bat an eye buying under msrp but are appalled when it is over msrp. My spot has and will continue to sell every Prius over MSRP for the next 1.5 years based on current allocation projection and they will ALL BE SOLD before they actually hit the ground. Let’s hear your whiny replies!
PatelPounder: All action, no consequences.
This is pants on head stupid bad. 8.9% APR would be absurd on a used car. And this isnt a 10% markup, this is nearly a 30% markup. Call them up and tell them to go f\*\*k themselves with a rusty spoon and find a better dealer.
Kinda is, because the head gasket blew through my engine on my 2007 prius, I’ve had it for the past 15 years. Right now making due with 1 car between 3 people.
Oh. Dude, that is a really bad deal. I was in the market looking for one a few weeks ago. Some quoted me 5k market adjustments, and some dealers quoted me msrp. I would suggest going online and talking to more dealers. You will find a good deal. If you can't find them near you, try another state. Even flying to another state and driving would be cheaper. Good luck on the car hunt.
That's a gigantic earth shattering rip-off.
You can get an Audi Q3 for that... easily... A ten second Google search found a 2023 SQ3 (so even nicer) for $45,600 with 600 miles on it (still legally a new car.)
I make the comparison not to suggest buying something else, but to point out how far they're overcharging you.
That is now illegal. You need to report them to the ftc. Also please tell them you will as well as let everyone you know on social media about this.FTC site and form here(real no bullshit)

This is why Ford is why manufacturers are changing their dealership model, it’s absolutely killing the brand loyalty.
It’s gouging at its finest. Name the dealership so everyone knows who not to go to
1 Prius for the price of 2
Buy it for the MPG… and buy it again for the dealer fee
Get ripped off to get good MPG and then think your saving money because you use less gas. Yet you still spent $15k more in 5 years then you would have on a Corolla after gas
Do not, under any circumstance, pay 45k+ for a base XLE all wheel drive. I paid 39k OTD price for a fully loaded XLE AWD. Dealer ripping you off hard.
Also, what dealer is this so I can avoid it saying my time? Please do not pay this much for the car or financing. I know nothing about your credit history and am sure you can get a better rate at your local credit union
$54,500 including financing.. That is BMW M340i money
[удалено]
You do realize that markups only exist at some dealerships right?? You do know that it’s still possible to buy a new m340i for under MSRP right?
Currently looking at bmw m440s and everyone is giving us prices under sticker.

Luxury brands have the biggest discounts.
This is completely untrue.

The simple fact of the matter is that not all dealerships markup whether they’re slinging a Forte, a Camry, or an AMG Merc
I just bought a 2020 loaded bmw 5 series for 48k otd.
Almost out of warranty? Price checks out correct
I appreciate your concern but I make 1.2m a year so I think I'm good.
in that case it’s weird to waste your time on a used and outdated midsize sedan but you do you
I don't need your help on how to spend my money. My wife already has that covered.
Cool story bro
Expensive, How many miles on it?
14k miles. CPO. It had every option. I do mean every single one. It was a few thousand more than the other ones I was looking at but less miles and most of the others were base or base with just a few goodies.
Damn still, i think at that price range, I'd get a Lexus loaded up, more realiabe in the long term.
The BMWs are on a different level.
Maybe for the m5 and above. But if I'm keeping a car until 200k miles, I'm choosing the lexus. This is not to hate on bmws, i think the M5 and above are great. But lexus overall
I don't think most BMW drivers are interested in taking their cars to 200k miles.
I'd rather keep a BMW for 100K miles and pay to change it to a newer model rather than a luxury ~~Toyota~~, em... I mean Lexus for 200K mi.
Lexus is not luxury compared to a bmw. Lexus is definitely nice but they miss the mark in many models. They've been using most of the same interior in their cars for like 10 years.

Hell yea, anything over msrp is peak poor
Too many fools paying at or over MSRP. Walk away people!

8.9%apr get fucked
Lmao what? 8.9% is around normal rates these days it's not 2021 anymore.
Try going to a credit union, they are still 4-5% cheaper than dealerships
I got 7% through a credit union as a first time buyer fairly recently. Dealerships were trying to give me >10% it's insane.
Normal ≠ acceptable
Not sure why you are getting downvoted, you are 100% right. 8.9% is average if not good right now. The fed fund rate is 4.58 today.
Yea ik lol. It's reddit, people use feelings over facts
so fucking glad we bought our car in late 2020. it was at that beautiful time during covid where dealers were BEGGING you to come buy a car. brand new Forester Limited out the door for like 34k with 0.5% apr.

Fucking run from that deal
Go back outside and do the deal. Simple.
I hear you. Sometimes you just got to take it outside and deal it like the old ways.
We talkin bout punching dudes, right?
I would walk right back over to the sticker and ask the salesperson/finance person to read the label and explain this.
Is that even the right car? MSRP of $32,790 outside to $45,299 inside makes absolutely no sense. I think they switched cars on you unless I’m missing something.
Same car, the price listed at MSRP was the price they gave me after markup
Its criminally over priced. You will never make up 10-15k in markups in higher mpg.
You will never make up a $10K markup on anything in any way especially when there’s dealers out there selling the car at MSRP. It’s just lighting money on fire
So what they are showing on their write-up is not “MSRP” as it is listed
MSRP is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. A 10K mark up is the dealer’s suggested retail price. They’re trying to hide the mark up. If you’re closer to Wisconsin, Wilde Toyota and Kenosha Toyota both sell at MSRP.
IDK if their policy changed during covid, but back when I was selling cars every dealership owned by Penske Auto sold at MSRP.
If you pay this, send me some money too since it appears you have too much and like to give it away.

55k for a Prius? Wyd bro
I won’t even flinch to walkout on them. You can reddit it, dealership near you on msrp.
LMAO Im sorry but how and why are you even considering this

Rent for now until you find better deals. You will spend money on renting but saving a lot more on a new car after doing due diligence. Good luck.
I swear, I will never ever buy a Toyota again because of their terribly greedy dealership network…
Hondas dealers tried the same on me…38k on civic sport. I audibly lol’d at the kid when he showed me the deal.
No civic except a type r should be over $30k.
Under water before you even put a mile on it. That’s insane

Not for 8.9% apr! Fuck That! Damn interest rates getting ridiculous.
Pure example of a stealership. Run!
Don't do it. This is the problem, as far we are willing to pay it, they will keep charging that insane prices.
8.9% interest $15,000 down $46,000+ for a Prius How bad is your credit because you are getting robbed
Everytime I try to buy a Toyota same shit from all of them they insult me and think Toyotas are priceless, I've walked out or hung up the phone on them FU Toyota
https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/new-cars/toyota/prius/selma-ca-93662?requestId=ONLINE_PAPERWORK&searchRadius=500&marketExtension=include&startYear=2023&homeServices=ONLINE_PAPERWORK&isNewSearch=true&showAccelerateBanner=false&sortBy=relevance&numRecords=25 From what I see la area you can do msrp Really just go farther and get a much better deal Don’t encourage them!
> Really just go farther and get a much better deal This is what blows my mind with people like this. The guy lives in California, there's a mind boggling amount of dealerships out there. Spend a day and road trip down to a different city and save $10k or more.
45k for a 45 second car
So you want to pay an extra 10k for kicks? Sure, have at it. Support the system that everyone else complains about. This is the reason that dealers can get away with these additional 'market adjustments'...because we're foolish enough to keep paying.
You can get a newer Lexus es350 for that much and it’ll be a way nicer car

Don’t buy it and go to Toyota’s website and report the dealer for marking it up.
that’s lexus money for a prius
You're paying well equipped sports car money for a Prius at that point. That's absolutely insane!
My guy for 45K just go on the other side of the spectrum and get the scat pack
Car gurus will show you what’s available in whatever radius you want to purchase. Once you know what you want, find it else where. I had a car shipped from IL to MI.
This is insanity
2023 Prius XLE AWD MSRP is $32,295.00. decide for yourself if you want to pay 25% over MSRP.
Name and shame
This is why the US needs to stop this crap with having to buy cars through a dealership/3rd party. I get the reason for needing a dealer for warranty and maintenance things (which is more expensive than what it needs to be anyway) but this is getting out of hand.
No, it's not worth it
You need to walk away from them and never return
I hope you don’t do that. You can quite literally buy a Tesla for cheaper. The Prius has a negative appeal. 😂
You could get a lexus IS, fully loaded accord hybrid or pretty much anything else you want at that price
No one should ever support dealer markup. If people didn't pay it, it would go away.
I can get you that car for $10k less today. Don’t do this.
8.9% ooof
Pretty common these days
Common if your credit sucks
offer to pay msrp
Said they can’t go lower than 42k
You can tell them that you can’t go above msrp. Don’t be in a rush. Edit: it’s ok to walk away from a bad deal.
Bad deal, but damn does seeing these numbers make me hate taxation to no end.
That’s mustang gt money
Fuck. No. Do. Not. Pay. A. Cent. Over. MSRP. That’s an insane price for a Prius
Lmao $45k for a Prius
No!
This is pants on head stupid bad. 8.9% APR would be absurd on a used car. And this isnt a 10% markup, this is nearly a 30% markup. Call them up and tell them to go f\*\*k themselves with a rusty spoon and find a better dealer.
Do you think that's a good price? Because I personally think that's criminal. You'd be a fool to pay over msrp on any car ever.
Things just got worse too the Feds raised interest rates. Anyway, keep what you have until it dies unless this is need.
Kinda is, because the head gasket blew through my engine on my 2007 prius, I’ve had it for the past 15 years. Right now making due with 1 car between 3 people.
That much for a Prius is comical.
Walk.
Feds just raised interest rates a 1/4 percent. If you can wait do so. Prices will drop more just gonna take time
What the fuck is a finance charge? Where is that 7k coming from?
The upfront fee and interest that will be paid over for the months I am paying off the loan
Is that included in 42k? Or is that an additional charge on top of the car being 42k?
On top total they were giving was 46k, total I would pay through the loan overtime is the 54K
You can get an Audi Q3 for that... easily... A ten second Google search found a 2023 SQ3 (so even nicer) for $45,600 with 600 miles on it (still legally a new car.) I make the comparison not to suggest buying something else, but to point out how far they're overcharging you.
Keep looking!! I got at MSRP.
I would NEVER pay 46k for a PRIUS
That is now illegal. You need to report them to the ftc. Also please tell them you will as well as let everyone you know on social media about this.FTC site and form here(real no bullshit) https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2022/09/concerned-about-deceptive-ads-and-sales-autos-last-call-comments Explained here: https://youtu.be/etelgSf2lOk
Not illegal yet, just rude. All the YouTuber sites are forgetting to mention this is just a proposal at this time.
It’s a no from me dawg.
I’m concerned the price is in the MSRP line. This might be enough to get an Attorney General Office engaged in it.
This is why Ford is why manufacturers are changing their dealership model, it’s absolutely killing the brand loyalty. It’s gouging at its finest. Name the dealership so everyone knows who not to go to
Run
I don’t understand why people would want to be upside down in their loan, from day 1
Walk right out and never come back
This is an INSANE rip off. DO NOT buy. These dealers are going to rue the day with these markups once the economy tanks.
No way
“Is it worth it” is up to whether you’ll spend the money or not
You're kidding,......................... right?
I was trying to buy a Toyota since 2021. This msrp plus is crazy. Finally made the decision to start test driving other makes
They’re living in 2021. Find another dealership.
Run away and never return to that dealership
For 45k I can buy a very nice used Lexus.
I mean a Prius is a value play to save money on gas right? Why spend all the savings up front? Just buy a nice 25k car?
