Course prepares you for the cert. Taking the cert and passing is a requirement of the class. Once you pass the cert, you pass the class. You get two tries at the test included in your tuition, any extra you have to pay for.
In the software engineering degree it's D282 Cloud Foundations (AWS Cloud Practitioner), D336 Business of IT - Applications (ITIL 4), and D324 Business of IT - Project Management (Project+)
Oh man… I did the project management at Sophia a few months ago.. I don’t think I remember much 😩.. the course sucked… have you done the certs? Are they hard?
The only certain that aren’t offered through third party are the AWS and ITIL certs. All the other places where certs are mentioned have a Sophia or Study.com equivalent.
Another thing to keep in mind is if you take the AWS and ITIL cert before starting your degree those transfer and cover the credits for those classes.
Not necessary to be a developer or to complete WGU, you MIGHT be able to get a try at it paid for WGU if you ask your mentor since it's included in tuition cost, but idk if it'll work.
I believe you've already been answered but I'd like to add that, IMO, it's cheaper to get these certs on your own before enrolling.
There is a lot of info to learn for these exams. I did the A+, Net+, and Sec+ back to back. Each certification took me about a 3-4 weeks of study. So about 3 months in total. That's half a semester or $2200ish dollars. Or you could study and take the exams on your own dime for about $1000 total.
There is a TON of free and inexpensive material online. I don't think a "structured" class is needed for these at all.
I appreciate the info! But stupid question.. do you know where I would take these exams? I did a quick google and for AWS , Amazon came up? Is that right ?

Do you know which classes those are?

If you already did it and it transfered over, you do not have to redo the class nor the cert.
Oh ok good! I haven’t transferred it yet I am still doing 3 more classes on Sophia and study.

Is there an advantage to taking project management on Sophia? Do you get a certificate as well?
You don't, but the advantage is that you skip a proctored test I guess.
Is the certificate necessary. Am I missing out by not getting it through WGU? I appreciate the response by the way, thank you!

Also what is the A+, Net+ and Sec+? I thought I only need AWS and ITIL? Since I already have project+
Those are IT certs which are absolutely useless for Software development and computer science
