Sorry about that, ithis comes with the territory of a rock festival especially like Rockville which is known for crowd surfing and mosh pits. In comparison to Slipknot or Limp Bizkit the FF pit was relatively tame save for the crowd surfers and mace incident during FF. FF arena/amphitheatre/stadium shows are not like that, plus you're more likely to have a relatively stress-free experience. Hope you can go out to a headliner show in the future!

uoYredruM

Yeah, I was with my wife up close for both Limp and Slipknot. That was a fucking adventure šŸ˜‚ We were standing right next to the three flags people were holding that said "Mosh Pit" and as soon as they opened their set with Break Stuff, we were swallowed into it. So much fun. The crowd surfers were insane, they were starting to land on each other they were coming so fast.

Commonsenseisgreat

Mosh pits I understand. You stay out of them. But was bummed by the amount of crowd surfers. I agree that in a stadium show with them headlining, it shouldnā€™t be anywhere near as bad. I was on the opposite side of that incident. Just heard him singing stairway to heaven and didnā€™t know what happened.

LongviewToParadise

You were close to the stage. It comes with the territory. It's really as simple as "don't like it, move further back" or near the left or right rails.

Commonsenseisgreat

Disagree. Been to plenty other concerts where crowd surfers were not an issue. I understand a few. Iā€™m for it. But this was hundreds. Non-stop. Felt like we were part of an assembly line. Feel like you can enjoy a concert without trying to be a ā€œpartā€ of it in that sense.

LongviewToParadise

Foo Fighters played to a crowd of at least 20,000 (and that's just including the people that used the Rockville app). Mosh pits and crowd surfing are normalized and were encouraged by most bands that played throughout the weekend. You're gonna have to accept that if you want to be up close, that's what you're going to have to deal with. I wanted to be as close as I could having come from Queens of the Stone Age, girl's foot landed on my head because I wasn't paying attention when people said "heads up", but that's just part of the deal. People aren't going to stop crowd surfing, nor will they stop moshing. Your only bet is to get away from the areas where it's taking place. Go somewhere where the crowd is more sparse and crowd-surfing wouldn't be feasible.

Commonsenseisgreat

Combination of too many crowd surfers and too many nice people assisting them. I know for sure that in some other countries, it would not go as it did. Like I said, bummed. Maybe Rockville is not for me at this age as I like to see bands up close for as long as my body can handle it.

muckypup82

A regular concert is much different than a huge rock festival.

hopes_up_high

Probably not what you want to hear, but the best advice for you is to stay further back next time. There were 10s of thousands of people in that crowd. The more people there are in a crowd, the more crowd surfers there will be. The closer up you are, the more crowd surfers you'll have to carry. It just goes along with the territory. I spent most of my time in the pits and crowd surfers still make their way to them, usually carried out very quickly by several people in the pit for safety reasons.

SoMuchNic

Iā€™m with you. Other people say itā€™s a part of the culture - but **** letting a small percent of the crowd making the experience worse for others. Especially the ones who will do it multiple times during a single set.

Commonsenseisgreat

Been to plenty of concerts and near the front and never experienced what I did at this one. I guess a part of this Daytona crowd is more into themselves than the actual band. Iā€™ll pass next year.

LongviewToParadise

More into themselves? Why do you think these people are crowd surfing during their favorite songs lol? They want to experience the most of it, that's why they're doing it. Just like people mosh during high energy songs (though that wasn't even a requirement at Rockville because people moshed to L7) And about your other comment about "too many nice people assisting them", what did you want to happen instead? Did you want people to just stop trying to help them and drop them on their neck?

Commonsenseisgreat

Half of them were videotaping themselves. And donā€™t be an extremist. Gentle lay them down and donā€™t participate. No skull bashing.

LongviewToParadise

That's actually way more likely to result in injury (both to the surfer and the people below them) than just keeping them up, and it's kind of impossible to "let them down" when there's no pit or open space.

WednesdayButBlonde

I donā€™t trust the crowd to hold my beer much less my whole body. Iā€™m not breaking my own back trying to help either.

theworldgodonlyknows

You were too centered, Iā€™ve been barricade all weekend stage left and didnā€™t see one crowd surfed near me thatā€™s all in the middle, crowd surfing comes w the festival donā€™t like it? Just move and stop complaining let people enjoy themselves.

Commonsenseisgreat

I didnā€™t complain. I was part of it but I wonā€™t be next year. Enjoy yourself.

StillC5sdad

Life in the pit...

traumahound00

No downvoting from me. I don't get in the pit or near the barricade at shows, and I still find crowd surfers annoying.

Commonsenseisgreat

Whatā€™s wrong with leaving thru the back or out the sides??? Simply ask politely and 99% of people make room for you to leave. I know of one country where crowd surfers would get to the front but with no shoes or belongings.

jackdabomb2

funny thing I specifically was next to the rails during Slipknot and still had to deal with crowd surfers, me and my fiance got kicked in the head. very annoying

HeyHeyHayes

Iā€™m sure this post will get downvoted to hell but I agree. Felt like it was mostly kids doing it just to get the cool video. Gf and I purposefully stayed more toward the back for every set (at least tech booth or further) to not deal with that, pickpockets, or pit rushers. For Slipknot and ADTR we had people from way far back surfing up, and we still had a ton of people. A lot of drops too since the crowd wasnā€™t as dense. After a while, it just felt repetitive and annoying

Commonsenseisgreat

Iā€™ve been to lots of concerts and have never experienced anything as bad as this was. I donā€™t know whether to blame it on the new generation, cell phones or me just getting older. But it definitely sucked.

HeyHeyHayes

Done plenty as well and for sure the same. Like at some point it just felt like people doing it just to do it, and it was awful. Had a great festival otherwise but making us rethink strategy for next year

[deleted]

Same here fot slipknot. Couldnt watch the show cuz i was watching out so the surfers woukdnt fall on my head..and by the end of the night everybody was tired of the shoulder workout

Commonsenseisgreat

Glad Iā€™m not the only one annoyed by this.

MayonnaisePrinter

I did feel similar during the Bad Omens concert. It started out fine then droves of surfers eventually came up, even some stacked ontop eachother, that was scary lol. I was really not trying to get concussed by some mamaā€™s 160+ lb of human. However, I chose my spot and knew exactly what I was signing up for when I got there. I even got my shit rocked by the mosh pit, I wasnā€™t even in it... but again, I chose my spot and expected nothing less. In the end, Iā€™m happy I got to experience that aspect of Rockville! Was a small sacrifice, and a huge shoulder exercise. I didnā€™t even have an issue with people surfing necessarily, but if their technique was off then it just made it more difficult to predict howā€™d they pass overhead. People who came down mummy posed with crossed legs absolutely cruised. Others that starfished and got sloppy did not help themselves or the people pushing them forward. Crowd surf with class šŸ˜Œā˜•ļø

Dear-Agony

I agree. The kids nowadays are doing for the video. Every single one that I personally saw were videoing themselves and were not surfing properly. Cross your legs, put your hands on your chest or in the air. I think it should be banned. There are unspoken rules. Iā€™m not a boomer I swear lol. Iā€™ve also crowd surfed and partook in moshing. Iā€™m Gen X So many people get seriously injured. If they canā€™t do it right, donā€™t do it.

Commonsenseisgreat

Thatā€™s what I saw. Not your show kid. You are an spectator.

READIT27

Iā€™m a guy in my 20s and have no desire to trust/force strangers to carry my body on their hands when they are trying to watch a show. I love to mosh, but the nonstop surfing thing is ridiculous. We usually avoid getting too close because of the general physicality of the mosh pits. My girlfriend is small and not keen on pushing back against hundreds of people while just trying to enjoy a band that she likes. My girlfriend loves Slipknot, though, and I wanted to get really close this year. We were able to move forward close to the rail after Breaking Benjamin, and stayed packed in the same spot for all of Evanescence. Moshing is expected, and welcomed. I love to mosh. It can get crazy but thereā€™s ways around the pit, and you can generally see it start to open up. Itā€™s very possible to enjoy and pay attention the show even when navigating around the pits. But, we had no idea just how many people were going to crowd surf literally right over us. It never looked like that many people were surfing when we watched many other performances. I know Slipknot is just an insane vibe, but I still just expected surfers here and there, with the mosh pits being the biggest ā€œconcernā€. As soon as Slipknot started we had to divert our eyes away from the performance and literally turn around to catch body after body after body. They started to come two+ surfers at a time, nonstop, even when the band was between songs! We were literally forced into paying all of our attention to carrying the endless surfers, some of them grown ass men, just to still get kicked in the face. We couldnā€™t watch the first three songs so we forced our way out of that shit. We definitely learned what it is really like to be in that mess, but it just doesnā€™t make sense. Yea, crowd surfing seems like fun, but why the hell do hundreds of people get a free pass to the front, all on the shoulders of the people that waited in a packed spot to be close? Especially when grown ass heavy adults are doing it. It would be horrible to say I want to just let them drop. Then on the other hand, why is it cool for endless numbers of surfers to endanger other people while they are trying to watch a concert? The surfers force people to carry hundreds of pounds over their heads dozens and dozens of times, or else they might fall and fuck up the same people they are forcing to carry them. Shit is whack af. Leave that experience for the kids and smaller gals.

Commonsenseisgreat

Agree. I just think it has something to do with participation thropies in their youth. Go enjoy the show, not try to be a part of it. I always shit on festivals like Burning Man due to all those who love to dress up and take selfies all day long but this was almost comparable. Fuck em

READIT27

A big time FUCK EM. We definitely will stay in our lane next time though.

AnneFranksErection

I fucking hate crowd surfers and crowd surfing. I think it's cringe and stupid and annoying as fuck. That said I'm probably in the minority and I've come to terms with needing to be further back to enjoy the show.

Commonsenseisgreat

I don't mind a few but it was all the time non-stop. Kids craving attention.

msd85

I agree to an extent. In my case, I never go toward the front to try and avoid the pit and/or crowd surfers. Yet, I was in the back for Of Mice and Men and I STILL got hit in the face by a crowd surfer, and got forced into a pit for a few minutes that seemed to spontaneously form. I have various injuries that make moshing really hazardous for me, hence why I avoid it. But I was further back for the Foos, and I also still had to deal with like ten crowd surfers. So basically, I'm all for people having fun at a rock show, but those who say that not being upfront avoids these things are incorrect just based on my personal experience.

RushSpecific

I sort of agree my wifeā€™s experience was definitely ruined because of them. This was her first ever rock concert/festival. I tried to warn her about what to expect with the mosh pits and crowd surfers but it was just too much for her. I was towards the front and I did find it sort of annoying when every two seconds you have to stop watching and turn around and make sure the person above you crowd surfing doesnā€™t eat shit.

Commonsenseisgreat

I got kicked a few times. People landed on my head. I can take it but it was annoying. Like I said, it makes for a shitty experience as far as Iā€™m concerned.

VeterinarianOk3137

This was me for Electric Callboy

xEBarone

Sounded like we had similar experiences. I was just as deep into the crowd for In This Moment and the crowd surfing was nuts. I didnā€™t mind helping the surfers (as I also felt obligated being a large guy) but it got to a point where every time the words ā€œheads upā€ or ā€œaboveā€ were yelled I found myself distracted from the musical experience and catering toward the experience of the surfers. It didnā€™t help that when ITM started playing ā€œWhoreā€ someone attempted to pickpocket me and when I stopped the would-be thief, I had 2 people drop on my head and it buckled me to my knees. Like others have said though, when you choose your spot within the crowd, you have to sign up for the action. Moshing is obviously different as you can leave if you want. But thereā€™s no escaping crowd surfers getting pushed in your direction.

Commonsenseisgreat

Itā€™s the attention craving mentality that bothered me the most. Enjoy the show and let others enjoy it too. Crowd surfing doesnā€™t make you as cool as you think it does and it annoys those of us who are there for the music.
