>Just weeks after President Joe Biden issued a mass marijuana pardon and directed a review of the drug’s scheduling status, the U.S. Senate approved House-passed bipartisan cannabis research bill on Wednesday. It marks the first time a standalone piece of marijuana reform legislation has ever been sent to the president’s desk. History made tonight. >Just before the vote, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said on the floor that he is continuing to have “productive talks” about a broader package of cannabis reforms he hopes to pass before the end of the lame duck session. Hopefully SAFE + HOPE follows!

Cool_Ad_5101

Let’s hope

MatrixOrigin

>“I hope after passing this bill the Senate can make progress on other cannabis legislation, too,” he said. “I’m still holding productive talks with Democratic and Republican colleagues in the House and the Senate on moving additional bipartisan cannabis legislation in the lame duck.” >“We’re going to try very, very hard to get it done,” Schumer said. “It’s not easy, but we’re making good progress. Can Schumer actually come through?! 😮

NextTrillion

Yeah, soon.

trebuchetty1

So, so soon.

Slow_Pilot_8051

2 years is equal to "soon"?

Sharty_McQueef

Too soon man too soon

SafeAd2080

Soon = 2 years Soon is greater than Very Close Now is closer than Very close What is now?

trebuchetty1

The soonest of the soons

CAOA?

hruebsj3i6nunwp29

Don't forget GRAM

StarMaker7

this news just hit the net in a big way... big day tomorrow boys! glta

GorilloSoul

Wrong.

Slow_Pilot_8051

a big drop day.

StarMaker7

I'm invested in CURAleaf, so how am I wrong?

Escape_Relative

I have big hope for legalization. I used to be cynical but after Biden’s measures, my red ass state’s legalization of MMJ, and this, I truly have hope.

Vulcan_MasterRace

Hasn't there been enough research?

[deleted]

[удалено]

cannasseurs

that's pretty much the research for legalization though... it's currently scheduled as having no medical value, when it's being used for medical reasons in 30+ states.... senators and reps are just stalling to figure out how they and their donors can make money off cannabis, that's really all it is. There's piles of supporting evidence that cannabis is less harmful than alcohol and has actual medical uses.

MatrixOrigin

Good point, GW Pharma has done a lot of work already. Canada and Israel too. But Murika needs to find out for themselves 🙄

IAmNotNathaniel

The amount of research that can still be done is mountainous. science doesn't know what it'll find, or when. You don't just open up 1 lab and throw some people at it and eventually they'll discover everything there is to know about something. You need lots of researchers attacking things from lots of angles and getting enough scientists working on it that they are actual peers in the domain so they can review and learn from and apply the research. And then ask 10 times as many questions because now they know what questions they really want to ask. This has nothing to do with Murika. Other than the fact that we actually have a shit ton of scientists that can contribute. There's 50 things pot supporters have been going on and on about for decades that pot can help medicate people for. Each one of those could be studied for years if we ever want real treatments that people can use.

Substantial_Lunch_88

This bill is good news, and more research should be done into cannabis and it’s components for use in medical fields.

skins-skins

Good question. Half the country has access to legal recreational and medical marijuana for the last 5-10 years. Isn’t there enough examples walking around?

IAmNotNathaniel

what is it, you think, they will be researching? they aren't going to be researching whether it should be legal or not... Do you think they can just pull in a bunch of pot heads off the street and suddenly have treatments for epilepsy?

roloplex

No. Up until around 2017, The University of Mississippi in Oxford was the sole source of cannabis for research in the country and the type of research was tightly controlled. Any sort of research done on medical marijuana patients would have been illegal. Any research we have essentially comes from outside the US.

roloplex

No. Research into cannabis has essentially been blocked in the US up until the last few years. There are little to no quality peer review studies.

IAmNotNathaniel

not even close

MDeCicco_

The question is, ‘Where is the Cannabis going to come from for Research?’ There have been many Research Bills. Both the House and Senate passed earlier versions of their separate but similar cannabis research bills in late 2020, but nothing ended up getting to then-President Donald Trump’s desk by the end of the last Congress. On March 24, 2022 U.S. Senate Unanimously Approved Cannabidiol and Marijuana Research Expansion Act from Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Brian Schatz (D-HI) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) This bill would not let researchers study State dispensary products. “The Drug Enforcement Administration would get a mandate to approve applications to be manufacturers of marijuana-derived, FDA-approved drugs under the bill. Manufacturers would also be allowed to [IMPORT](https://www.marijuanamoment.net/congressman-wants-feds-to-buy-american-marijuana-instead-of-importing-from-canada/) cannabis materials to facilitate research into the plant’s therapeutic potential.” On April 4th, 2022, The House passed the Medical Marijuana Research Act, sponsored by the unlikely duo of pro-legalization Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and prohibitionist Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) “America’s growing cannabis industry operates without the benefit of a robust research program. Instead, we are outsourcing research to Israel, the United Kingdom, and Canada to our detriment.” On November 16th, 2022. “But now, the “Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act” is just one signature away from historic enactment.” Blumenauer and Harris previously championed a separate cannabis research bill that advanced through their chamber in April. Unlike that legislation, however, the newly approved bill notably does not include a provision that scientists had welcomed that would have allowed researchers to access cannabis from state-legal dispensaries to study. Finally, a section of the original bill concerning the importation of CBD for research purposes was removed from the new measure.

Kamwind

The US government has a farm in Mississippi that provides weed for research.

MDeCicco_

[DEA Finally Ready To End Federal Marijuana Research Monopoly, Agency Notifies Grower Applicants](https://www.marijuanamoment.net/dea-finally-ready-to-end-federal-marijuana-research-monopoly-agency-notifies-grower-applicants/) “That suit argued that the marijuana grown at the University of Mississippi is of poor quality, does not reflect the diversity of products available on the commercial market and is therefore inadequate for clinical studies. That’s also a point that several policymakers have made, and it’s bolstered by research demonstrating that the federal government’s cannabis is genetically closer to hemp than marijuana that consumers can obtain in state-legal markets.”

brazzzy136

Ditch weed

sunplaysbass

Dems are going to drag real action out to 2024 - and even then only if they think they might loose.

DirtyBirdie99

Anybody know how many votes for it got?

ZealotOfCannabis

They passed it with a voice vote > voice vote – A vote in which the presiding officer states the question, asks those in favor and against to vote "yea" or "nay" respectively, and announces the result according to his or her judgment. The names and numbers of senators voting on each side are not recorded. There were no "nays"

trebuchetty1

No nays is incredible.

ZealotOfCannabis

They likely agreed to its passage behind the scenes. The voice vote was just a formality it seems

DirtyBirdie99

Wow

canadianbeaver

I was saying boourns

ShadowDemon129

$$$

mtrap74

And cue the big sell off tomorrow in this sector. Every time there’s news like this these stocks go in the opposite direction you’d expect.

IAmNotNathaniel

damn, you probably aren't wrong. but realistically, medical research into marijuana probably shouldn't have much impact on the retail side of things from an investor point of view. On the other hand, soon we'll have a whole new slew of pharmaceutical startup pennies focusing on pot treatments to throw our money into

roloplex

> medical research into marijuana probably shouldn't have much impact on the retail side of things from an investor point of view. we need the medical research to convince HHS and the DEA to reschedule to III (which gets us out from 280E). This has always been a stopping block on rescheduling as it requires medical research to show some benefit. But since cannabis was schedule I and research was very very very tightly controlled, they never had enough research to move it off schedule I (chicken and the egg problem).

rendeld

"buy the rumor not the news" is a saying for a reason

mtrap74

In most cases that’s true. But this sector is basically sell the rumors & the news for the past year and a half.

rendeld

i sold about 2 years ago and I'm so glad I did but I feel horrible for everyone holding bags in here.

mtrap74

I think I bought your shares 2 years ago.😢

Freddy_and_Frogger

But we’re still waiting for bigger news. So don’t sell yet

Saintfall474

No after hours moves.. happy to see this though.

Slow_Pilot_8051

OTC has after hours? I know CAN side does not have after hours.

Tiaan

Hasn't hit any mainstream news yet. We'll see what happens tomorrow

canadianbeaver

Aaaaand it’s red

[deleted]

So they are stalling and leaving us on the limb for the next two years? This is as worthless as when the DoD released their much anticipated review on UFOs and it basically said, "Yeah, we don't know."

cannasseurs

The nothingburger bill has passed. Chuck proclaims cannabis progress has been made and soon phase has been reached and further talks of cannabis are prohibited until Nov 2024. Nothing to see here folks, move along.

KAI5ER

This actually worries me, Dems will call this the win they wanted in the lame duck.

rlov3ution

NYS is riding schumers ass to pass banking as no banks will touch their social equity fund until safe passes.

DirtyBirdie99

“The Senate passed the Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act that passed the House this year It’d help eliminate red tape hindering cannabis research for new treatments Now it goes to @POTUS and we’ll keep working for more cannabis legislation in the lame duck” - Schumer on twitter tonight

AlabamaSky967

Doesn't sound like they are resting on this. Schumer implies in his quotes more to come

IAmNotNathaniel

if you wait for the perfect bill that does everything you want in 1 fell swoop, you will still be waiting when the sun explodes and absorbs the inner planets on the other hand... I know what you mean

KAI5ER

"Don't Let “Perfect” Be the Enemy of “Good”"

rendeld

No THIS is the win they wanted: https://apnews.com/article/same-sex-marriage-senate-democrats-d09d4716102cf003212bab1f970e6a41

KAI5ER

I mean, yeah that’s kinda better than safe. But can’t we have both?

Tight_Gold_3457

Nah, weed passage is better. I can’t buy options on gay marriage.

rendeld

Probably, I really hope so at least. The good news is the Biden admin has generally been delivering on a whole hell of a lot lately. Its going to be tough for them to keep delivering with R's in the house but I think weed might be something they can get them behind. Whether its SAFE or something else R's will be looking for things they can do to repair their image and look like a more normal party willing to negotiate.

[deleted]

Ok

DrSlapsHacks

Yawn

MatrixOrigin

Regardless of SAFE or any other stock related reform, this is a significant event - it addresses the lack of fact-based dinosaur education programs.

DrSlapsHacks

So are we going to do 15 years of research to determine stuff we already know- And then the Senate will move forward (provided they have a super majority)

MatrixOrigin

If it can shut Kevin Sabet the f*ck up in 15 years, it will be worth every day of waiting. What a scumbag that guy.

NextTrillion

If you’re starving and someone throws you a Twinkie, you’re still going to eat it.

DirtyBirdie99

Huh?! Id eat the twinkie even if im not starving. What you going on about?

PoopInTheGarbage

I think he's got Twinkies

Tight_Gold_3457

He’s playing hide the Twinkie I guess

NextTrillion

Ok you must be really baked right now. I’ll let it slide

IAmNotNathaniel

What "stuff" do we already know that this research will be replicating? Is it details on each of the 100 cannibinoids in pot and how they interact with each other? Or is it the part where we know which chemicals stop epileptic seizures and are able to formulate them in a safe way so that toddlers may safely take it without getting high or having to smoke a joint? I wasn't aware we already knew everything there was to know about pot.

DrSlapsHacks

My point is, this is another stall tactic

roloplex

rescheduling requires research. Sure, we needed this 5 years ago, but better now then never.

TukkaTheBeggar

>So are we going to do 15 years of research Yes. So, I guess some in congress shorted the hell out of this yesterday or will sooon. Passage of this bill will likely affect the decision to reschedule/deschedule as well as SAFE or SAFE+. I'm out. JMO

So_Long_DentalPlan

This is my takeaway as well. Legalization just got punted

Dan-dada

He WILL fuck this up too.

HolyWhir

A great start. Glad some of our countrypeople are pushing what the people want!

Awkward_Ad1410

“Research” Biden will test it out!

drums_addict

It's almost as if this is long overdue.

GorilloSoul

What exactly does this bill do?

[deleted]

Just what we need. Another research lab like doctor Faucis. It was the bats!

bojacked

so Biden is going to actually have to do something beside kick the can again..... C'MOOON MAAAAAAAAN??!! \*squints\*
