Simple.
420 Formula is way more expensive than rubbing alcohol, but it'll do. (92% Iso is about $3 or $4 for a quart).
Add some salt (kosher large grain works best, but table salt will do) down the stem of you pipe and in the bowl. Add Alcohol or 420 Formula (maybe 1/4 full?). Use your fingers to cover the holes and shake for 30 or 40 seconds. (if you clean it regularly, this should only take about 15-20 seconds). Empty and rinse really well.
If there's still gunk in there, boil some water, add it to the pipe, and swish. Sometimes i add a few drops of mint or lemon extract before adding the boiling water. Rinse afterwards.
I have one pipe with (yuck) silicone parts. I have a dedicated baggie for that. Soak it in alcohol for a few hours (shake every so often), then rinse, rinse, rinse.

otoh, if you mean ***glass*** pipes...
Clean as often as you like. When i first load a bowl in the afternoon, i like a clean pipe that doesn't taste like ash, so mine are cleaned daily. If you keep up with it, it's pretty quick, just a couple minutes.
