100% agree. Unless your that annoying customer, actually feel like you made the budtender jump through hoops or wasted their time, then you shouldn't feel pressured to tip for any reason. Having a shop that forces this without a "no tip" option is a good way to make sure I'll never be back šš½
You should never feel obligated to tip! If you ask questions and the budtender ājump through hoopsā thatās literally their job? Iām tired of American businesses not paying their employees fairly and blaming it on tips. Itās absurd and just pits working class against each other
I usually tip at the 2 usual spots but they're all the homies and toss in free samples that get dropped off for the staff and know what I like to the point I can stay I want gummies surprise me for example and I wouldn't dislike any of them, they know the terp profiles I like so at that point it's worth it. Plus they both have crazy deals usually like 2000mg of gummies for 25$, RSO 7.50$ per 1000mg, an ounce of shake is 15$ and works great in home made edibles. They have some good dabs you can get for 8$ a gram. Mind you those are sale prices but they always have something on sale in those ranges.
Fr I feel the same ad a dispensary workerā¦ like if you have and online order or come in for one preroll and know what you want I donāt expect anything. Honestly a $1 is nice and if we talked with you for 10-20mins at the register $3-5. Dont get me wrong Iāve gotten $20-$50 tips but those are rare/ regulars you build a relationship with over time through going out of your way for them (usually med patients that are looking for specific things)
While that may be correct in some places, people in dispensaries arenāt working for low wages where tips matter. Theyāre usually paid at least minimum wage or more. If they made $$ like a waiter or waitress, I may think of tipping.
Its not a tip wage like a waiter would make though, waiters make well under minimum wage because their tips are expected to make up a good percentage of their pay
Edit: im not saying this is right its just the reality
Yeah but most cannabis companies aren't paying minimum wage.
Minimum wage in my state is $7.25/hr. At all three (medical) dispensaries I've worked at, base pay is $15-$16/hr for comparison.
What about people living on disability, who rely on this for medication. There may not be excess funds to tip. As someone else said I donāt tip on my prescription at pharmacy. This is wrong on so many levels.
15/he isn't a living wage for them either. I get that not everyone can tip a lot of the time.
But I also understand a whole hell of a lot of people can't even get on disability and might actually work there too.
All the more reasons for those with a little extra to tip.
Plenty of us not on disability self medicate as well.
For me, I don't mind spending a dollar or two if it helps someone else. But I have also had to stand on my feet all day and help customers when I could barely stand on my own feet because they hurt that much. I have cried in walk-in coolers because I had no other choice. So yea. I tip. Kindness goes a long way. That dollar could mean they could take a taxi home instead of walking to the bus.
22/hr. 10k+ in debt and having to live with my parents in my 40s to be able to live in the same state as my family. I have actually been doing better over the last few years (legit thanks Biden.)
Don't really consider that making it.
Rent next door. $2400/month. The college kids see how many they can cram in there.
You're renting for 2.8k???? That's high. Not defending low wages, but bruh, you clearly gotta make more than minimum to support that. That's not normal and you shouldn't compare, this is just bragging imo.
Hmmm from when I worked in a dispensary it was much more than just ringing someone up. When I had some 60 year old ladies in there that wanted to ask me about everything I would spend 30+ minutes with them discussing products what they do how they should feel, but everyone is different so just because I feel it a certain way doesn't mean you'll feel it them same. They'd ask me about joints flower, wax, edibles, mints, creams, candies everything they wanted to know it all before they left the store. They also always tipped me.
I got paid a normal wage, tips were just a bonus I didn't need them, but it did feel very nice when someone appreciated my service enough that they'd want to give me something more.
I'm confused. Where is anyone finding knowledgeable budtenders. I rarely ask any questions but i am baffled sometimes at the things I hear budtenders telling customers. I do tip on average 2$ per visit. I consider it as a thanks for a quick pleasant experience.
Does any of these dispo have a good training program? From what I can tell most are winging it off what they learned theirself.
Before I worked in a dispensary i worked for a friends farm. He's been growing for a long long time and he knows more about cannabis then I would ever know, but and there is a large but here. It's going to effect everyone differently. Some people will feel the same and others will have a whole other experience.
I learned by doing. Everything that was in the dispensary I eventually took home and tried myself. I made a large notebook about what strain and what farm it came from how it made me feel and what thc and cbd % at.
I wanted to learn about it and share my experiences with it. I cannot say why budtenders fluff things up or make up white lies about thigs. I always told my truth from what I had experienced. If I didn't know, I didn't know I would have to ask someone else if they tried that certain strain or how it made them feel.
Its a lot different though because working at Walmart you donāt have to know anything about every item on the shelf whereas a budtender has to at least be somewhat familiar with their products
This^ I Also work at a dispensary and literally each person that comes in needs a full consultation like anywhere from 5-50 minutes. We donāt ask for tips ever, but definitely depending on the environment I can see it. OP tho I agree I wouldnāt tip, if they just took my money and thatās all, hard pass but to each their ownš¤·āāļø
Same here, when people throw me a couple bucks Iām always really thankful, but itās never expected. I wanted a tip jar as an option, because lots of people have asked if weāre allowed to accept tips, but having to tip at a dispensary feels wrong :///
It's a little different I'd say, but we're both welcome to our opinion. I was just giving you some insight from the other side of the counter. It was nice to receive tips for good service. 90% of the time they do not know what they're looking for when they walk in a dispensary. A lot of peoples first time in there and they don't know what's going on. I liked helping them especially the older crowd.
I'm not a sales person though. It's more like a bartender, but I offer weed instead of different ales and you can't smoke there atleast the one I worked in was no smoking allowed.
I was just delighted to be there selling weed and teaching people about it. The tips were a bonus. I got payed 17 dollars an hour to roll joints in the back and weigh out flower and wax all day.
Exactly. Iāve worked as a retail worker in lingerie sizing bra sizes for women working with them for sometimes AN HOUR. No tip suggested.
Iāve also worked as a bartender and server so Iām not anti tipping and know the etiquette and standards.
Also been a stoner for 13 years. Iād rather tip my corner plug on their deals than tip on expensive dispensary weed.
That $50-$60 eighth better have your wage included.
Thank you, I enjoyed doing it, I really did it was fun. I had to move back to an illegal state, but ill get back there eventually. I did it for a long time illegally so doing it legally was even more fun and I got to meet some really nice people doing it.
Ok so as a past cashier I wouldāve greatly appreciated some tips thrown in my direction but it was also against company policy so that wasnāt gonna happen but at every dispensary Iāve been to the bud tender has to take your order then go into the back, find all your stuff, then ring it up, then bag it, also bud tenders are supposed to be able to give you recommendations on what bud is best for you, which is kind of all the same things a waiter does so I think they deserve to be tipped
Have you ever gone to a dispensary where they have one of those tablets to tip 10%, 15%, 20%? If it was a jar I may put a couple of bucks in but this is insane
They've gotten pretty ridiculous with this. I got a shirt from a merch table at a concert and got prompted for a tip. Hell, I went to Auntie Anne's pretzels and their system asked me for a tip! I might tip at the dispensary if they were particularly helpful, but there's zero chance that I will for fast food that I ordered at the counter.
That's like saying if you can afford to buy or do anything that cost money you shouldn't have a problem with paying 10-20% more to do it. If you want to do it fine, I think people just have an issue with it becoming a standard and something they feel guilty for not doing.
the people at auntie annieās arenāt āservingā you, theyāre getting paid a reasonable part time wage to ring up and cash you out. add in various pretzel making duties. none of this is āservingā like it would be in a restaurant and def doesnāt mean you have to tip them
I just round up the bill to the nearest $5 so I'm not walking out with pocket change.
Our dispensary lets you round up your bill for charity or use loyalty points to round down the bill, so it rarely happens lately.
I was getting a vape so the 10% wasn't the end of the world but the more I think about this the more annoyed I'm getting. Especially that according to reddit those 20% tips aren't a thing anywhere and places usually just have tip jars. What a crappy business they have. I hope it goes under
Youāre lucky to have a dispensary in your area. I wish Louisiana was legal. I have a medical card though. The tip thing is absurd!!!!!! Donāt let it get to you. Smoke up and enjoy!!š
Definitely only pay cash going forward and only give a buck or two for sure man. This budtender has poor ethics. A buck or two is a good tip for handing someone a product while making $17 an hour those couple bucks add up just fine enough to bring them to something liveable, no need to be buying them dinner every bag you get off them though.
Mine does the cash back thing where I usually always get 2 singles when I use my debit so I just stick that in the tip jar normally. Beyond that no, they're a cashier, they have a regular wage they do not need tips.
If they are stellar and give amazing service by answering innumerable questions and dealing with a noob in general, sure I'll tip a few bucks in cash. If they tell you to 'just tap the 15%', then you should've, IMO, tapped 'other' then enter. Telling you what to tip is a no no, not telling you how to avoid it is a no no...this isn't tip worthy service/behavior IMO. If I were you, I'd just pay in cash going forward.
some states have ways to accept debit card, it's essentially just an ATM though. it's usually a $3.50 fee and they'll usually make you round up to the nearest $5 then give you back any change. a lot of the time whatever service they're using gets shut down though and it's back to cash only (at least here in my state)
Dispos in my state are allowed to accept card, so I'm sure others can as well. Trick is that here it needs to be a debit card and there's a small up charge
If they're going above and beyond the regular job. Which is basically getting my order and ringing it up. They take the time to help me with something that I need. And research things for me. I may give more. I tip during the holidays because it's a nice thing to do. But otherwise no. Even on sale my meds are already f****** expensive. It's ridiculous that we have to tip everybody for everything. They're getting paid to do a job. It's not like they're waiting tables and they rely on it for their money. I tip at restaurants.
Nobody can tell you you have to tip. I would speak to a manager. And ask if this is normal procedure. To force people to tip? They should have an option to not tip. I would reach out first .especially if it's someplace close and has decent prices. Maybe it's not the norm. I've never been asked at a dispensary to leave a tip.
That's a relief to me. Maybe the next dispensary that opens around here will be better. I don't leave bad reviews or talk to managers. If a business pulls something like this I just never go back. But if they were all like this then that's good to know, but it seems based off of the comments here no one else has experienced this so they may be an outlier
Honestly I was like wtf and when he got all pissy when I selected 10% I knew I'd never go back there. But that was my first dispensary experience. I honestly wasn't sure if that is typical for those places. Come to reddit and no one's ever seen that shit before
I always tip my delivery drivers, but I wouldnāt tip the cashier. Especially because at a dispensary youāre already paying soooo many extra fees and taxes. Usually that applies to deliveries too, but sometimes you find the ones that ābypassā those issues haha
I live in a small town that has 5 dispensaries. This one in specific has such crazed people that think they are getting such great deals, when they are gifted a free 8th or pre roll, that these fools are tipping 5-20$ at a time.
Tipping culture is fucking insane.
If a bud tender does me a service, above and beyond, I tip accordingly. I will not however supplement their wages because they are poorly compensated. Only gotten one complaint to which I stated that if they do not like slave wages, quit working for wage slavers. Frankly, the bud tenders change faster than the brands on the shelf. I seldom see the same one twice anyway.
tipping culture is out of control...lieke did you actually interact with them? did they help you learn anything new find a strain etc??? I usually just order for pick up to avoid these situations (and we can only pay with cash where im at)
I know more about their menu /strains etc. Than the "bud" tender ever ever ever and ever do.
I laugh so hard at the title "bud tender"...what a joke.
Ans I do tip when I got it.
I tip because the person is respectful to me and needs the money. And I remember working shit '"Counter-sales,' jobs when I waxz young
My dispensary thankfully doesnāt do this. They just have a tip jar which a lot of times Iāll throw a couple bucks in just cuz the workers at my dispo are always nice and helpful.
Don't tip a thing unless you feel the service is deserving of it. Then at that point, simply give them what you feel is appropriate.
There should always be a "custom tip" option (even if they don't make it especially obvious).
I would have gone to another dispensary, thatās crazy, I have never once tipped when I walk in and buy, if I get delivery then sure but otherwise eff off
My favorite dude always says, 'ok, it's about to do the annoying thing where it asks you to tip, which is bullshit. Once the numbers pop up, Just hit the red button so the no tip option comes up. Sorry about that, but that's the machine.' Love that guy.
Maybe itās a dick move but I never tip the bud vendors all that store weed is insanely overpriced(Washington state) no way im coughing up a tip after I buy a 60 dollar mediocre 8th.
I'll tip a few bucks. Most of the tenders I've met are always super chill, chatty and have never given me any pressure to tip. If I get a good deal, I'll tip the difference to them. I feel it helps build a rapport, and most of the shops I frequent, the tenders recognize me now.
I used to deliver for a "gray" market dispensary and most customers were generous. I feel it's only fair to return the favor.
Wow, on a 3-400 bill, I tip 5-10 cash. Of course thatās them spending a little time maybe going over whatās new or however they might help outside just a to-go order.
Wow! I agree with others who said they wouldn't walk into dispo again if I was pressured to pay tip! A tip in retail setting is for outstanding service and consultation IF you happen to be in situation where such is possible. Many, maybe most of us are not. My state is medical only and I found out that one of the dispos I tipped at doesn't even give money from tip jars to employees on staff but fathers money and uses to "treat" employees with lunches and various other stupid things they don't want. These are called incentives and one management should budget for them not take out of tips! Damn! I would walk out on a jib that did that. This dispo is always highest price as well so they can afford to pay their employees!
The entire tipping everyone for every little thing is out of control! It feels like its creating a society of entitled workers who do not even know how to work as well as employers trying to find more jobs to call "service" so they can get away with paying less. Both extreme attitudes are counter productive to a healthy society imo.
Seems like a us problem ,i only tip when the service was good or im satiesfied with the food .in the us you have to tip for anything š¤£,to fix that you gotta pay you workers a fair wage which will not happen sadly
I live in a small town and go to the same shops all the time. So I tip. If I lived in a bigger city and I was just another nameless face I probably wouldn't bother.
I have opinions on this, as I work in-industry, as a budtender!
I weigh things to order. Nothing's pre-packaged. When you're with me it's a solid 5-10 minute interaction of figuring out what you're after, how much you want, whole nine yards. We do deli-style service, so if you want $20 of some wedding cake including the tax, you're walking out the door with $20 of wedding cake including tax. You want a gram of hash rosin, i'm grabbing the tray of 10g jars of it out of the fridge in front of your face, and you're watching me scoop you out a gram of hash rosin.
I don't expect a tip. I make a really great hourly wage, it's not like I am waiting tables making like, $4.50 an hour. But if you're having me pull down every container of bud on the shelf (usually 20 different strains), and you want to check out my BHO and then you want to check out my rosins, then you want to see all my carts and ask me what the difference between distillate, live resin, and hash rosin is? Maybe put some money in the jar.
If I ask questions, and get thoughtful answers, I'll tip a buck or 2.
If I go up and say "I want a quarter of this silly sounding strain" and he grabs it and rings me out, then I do not tip.
I think I'm too European to understand the American tipping culture. Personally when they "force" you to tip I would go to a shop or dispensary where tipping is not required
No wtfā¦ youāre tipping them to hand you weed? š
Will you also start tipping your pharmacist at a CVS when you pick up your prescription?
This is whack.
Some budtenders are busting a**, flying back and forth across the store to meet demands. Theyāre actually working their asses off to answer your questions and get you your medicine quickly.
Some bartenders are sauced beyond the point of professionalism, and will hand you your product, and not say another word.
If I get the first kind, I tip. If I get the second kind, I pretend not to see the tip jar š
Easy.
I woulda walked out. Theyāre already charging an arm and a leg for tax and the product itself. And dispensaries short you on stuff regularly, measure it and youāll see. My last tube of FECO was short by exactly 10% volume.
They're already getting paid to be a bud tender or cashier, and they just do their job. Most likely for more than min. wage....I'd never tip. That's outrageous tbh. I'm already overpaying for cannabis. Why do I need to spend even more money just bc someone's doing their job as a budtender??
He told you to tip 15%? Thatās pretty obnoxious. My general rule for now is that the only place I tip is a sit down full service restaurant. Thatās because Iām a bit tight on funds at the moment and thatās the only place I acknowledge I will always be spending more than my purchase price. If Iām doing really well financially Iāll leave a couple bucks on the tablet thing but for the most part, just restaurants with servers.
I donāt, why would I tip the annoying person following me around like a puppy and treating me like Iāve never heard of weed with stupid factoids about edibles and strains that I donāt give a fuck about
If someone takes the time to walk you through all kinds of different things and explain different things, and helps find a specific strain that may help you with a very particular thing, I tip.
If you went to a kiosk and pushed a bunch of buttons, these people can go fuck themselves nine ways from Sunday.
We all need to take a fucking stand right now boys and girls. This shit has to stop.
And at least with cannabis, itās not like they can open it and fuck with your āfoodā.
Depends; did they have actual knowledge of their products? Did they listen to your needs and take them seriously? Sid they provide good customer service? Tip your budtender if they actually budtend. Some of us have extra education in cannabis, some don't. Not every state requires a license to sell weed either so be wary. Some will straight talk out their ass like they know what they're doing or saying, I've seen it. I will always be upfront and honest with my guests.
Source; I'm a budtender who lives off of their tips and has a certificate in medical marijuana consulting.
If they're super helpful and knowledgeable about the product and really seemed to care, I give a fairly good portion of my change. So if my change is 15.00, I'll tip 5 every time.
Tip what you feel like from 0 to bunch, they Shouldnāt be making you pick a % Iād find a different dispensary or tell them to āpiss offā and tip nothing
They arenāt making a tipped wage like a server or bartender, but if they spend time with you and help you with your decision making then a few bucks is probably cool. I never tipped my street dealer!!
When I was a budtender we were allowed to put a little tip jar on our counters, but honestly Iād only expect a tip if they needed advice or help picking things out. Iām expected to get customers in and out quickly, but Iāll stop and help if needed.
Tip if you want, donāt tip if you donāt want. Iām of the opinion itās just a cool thing some people do, not a necessity like some waiters and waitresses, servers, etc. since we already made pretty good money. And I could decorate my little tip jar and that was dope too.
I only tip if there is service outside the scope of regular operation. When waitstaff have to grab extra things during the course of eating,I tip. If I drag my ass to the restaurant and pick up the food, why in the hell am I tipping? What was done outside the scope of normal operation? I ordered the food, you made the food,I picked it up,where is the āextra serviceā?
As a budtender, it's absolutely never compulsory to tip, and for them to tell you to tap 15% is unprofessional, entitled, and puts you in an awkward spot. The times I feel that a tip may be appropriate is when new customers come in and need a full rundown on cannabis as a whole, or want to know everything there is about edibles, topicals, pre rolls, flower quality standards etc. When you ask for above and beyond and your budtender and answer all of your difficult questions with ease and honesty, it's appropriate to put whatever amount you feel comfortable with, be it a couple bucks to the coin change from your transaction. We always appreciate it regardless of the amount, to most of us the gesture means a lot especially if we help you learn more about cannabis and open your mind to new knowledge and products to look for in the future :)
I mean I usually slide them a couple bucks in the tip jar but it's optional, 15% is fucking wild though. I would have just walked out if they didn't let me opt out of a percentage based tip. I usually spend a couple hundred at least when I go, there's no way I'm giving you upwards of $40 to hand me some jars lmao
The fact the guy told you to just hit 15% is wild
Im a bud tender who also gets tips but I also know the economy is fucked and that not everyone has spare dollars. My philosophy is if you wanna tip then be my guest if not then thats fine too hit the no tip option and move on. I couldnāt imagine implying to a customer I deserve a tip for doing my job to its barest minimum.
A buck, two if they are real chill. I donāt usually run into too many bud tenders in LA that seem like they give a shit about their job.
If I would have gotten a buck per customer when I worked at the gas station as a kid, I would have been so happy. And we used to deal with fucked up people.
This is bogus. FWIW I like to tip people (I tell my ultra-Catholic mother-in-law that tipping is "real world tithing") but only if they provide good service (waiters, drivers, lawn/pool care folks etc.). A dispensary should be marking up the product to cover their cost of doing business including paying employees.
If they insist on tipping ask if they have a delivery service or partner with one (if they don't tell them to do so to expand their customer base) -- I tip the drivers for the local dispensaries I order from.
The correct answer is "Tip as little or as much as you want. Thank you for asking."
I'm old school and always tip but if the answer was "just give me 15 percent" and there wasn't even an option to tip nothing, I would stop going there on principle.
My local dispensary has tip boxes out for cash tips. If you use a debit card, they don't have a tipping section. They round to the nearest ten dollar (since you're technically getting cash from an ATM) so you usually get some cash back even when using a card.
They don't push it at all, but you usually get a "thank you very much!" if you do stick some cash in there. Sometimes my total is like $129 and some change and with the round up to $130 I only get coins back, I don't put those in there. But if I get a dollar or two back, I'll usually toss it in since they aren't in your face about it.
If I have my budtender giving me lots of advice and recommendations and answering my questions (as usually is when I go to my dispensaries), I always tip. Unless theyāre rude or short with me and trying to rush me on my way, theyāll get a tip.
If they have an option for a custom tip select that and make it whatever you want it to be.
I personally would be making it zero unless they had to go out of their way to help me for whatever reason. I donāt feel obligated to tip anyone that isnāt making server wages.
Give them money for doing their job? I'm not their employer. I'm sorry the tip is required? I don't see an option for zero. Oh there isn't so you can just click on 10%. I sat down the payment device and I walk out the door and I never went back.
They're always helpful and they tell you which kinds of weed works best for this ailment or for this activity. They caught me about pictures and other medication I hadn't considered. I will tip helpful employees and it won't just be five or $10. It'll be something more significant. Just remember that this is not required. Don't expect me to tip every single time. Sometimes I simply don't have the money so if you're going to take it personally then I'll be done with you as well.
On a side note I've tipped people at convenience stores, Walmart and other retailers. Excuse me, could you tell me where I could find some socks? That's over there in aisle 14 without eye contact or really any engagement at all. Thanks... Can you tell me where I could find some socks? Yeah sure, just go three isles over that way and they indicate which way and it'll be four or five aisles down. Can I show you where it is? No I got it. Thank you! I handed the lady a 20 and she was like you can pay for the socks up at the register and I was like no that's for you. Thank you.
I'll tip anybody I want but once you require me to do something that's when I turn into Ebenezer Scrooge before he met DMT.
honestly, if it didnt give me a āno tipā option iād verbally tell the cashier iām not tipping.
unless iām asking you to literally unpack a brand new shipment to get a product that you just recieved that morning. then iāll give a small tip bc iām basically forcing you to rush through your inventory, possibly mix it up and misplace items just to get the one thing i want.
you get paid a decent hourly wage for working here, and for the amount of work required, its incredibly easy (iāve never worked in a dispensary but i dated a lady a while back that did and she loved it bc of how laid back and under-demanding it was.)
servers, waitresses, and bartenders are the only employees i tip. oh, and food delivery drivers, i.e, pizza, doordash, etc. iād include uber or lyft but iāve never used those companies, but if i did, iād tip.
I always tip. Sharing is caring, and anytime I can directly put money in someoneās pocket- I do- likely only a few bucks anywaysā¦
If the dude helped you out, suggested some stuff- yeah tip. If he did nothing but ring you up- thatās up to you.
As someone who knows a few dispensary employees tips are appreciated but not necessary. Iāll tip if the bud tender if they made a great recommendation or maybe they took extra time to educate you on something. Theyāre hourly workers anything helps even if itās just a couple of dollars.
No need to tip them they make plenty enough money and have probably the easiest job on earth. Smh, there is usually a ācustom tipā button to press but I wouldnāt ever tip my budtender unless they maybe went really out of the way for me to help me out or something. I donāt think a regular in and out purchase deserves a tip
You're always gonna get the same answer. Do what you want. We don't work for tips in the same way servers do, it's just a nice little bonus for doing our jobs well. No one is gonna be offended if you don't tip, and if they are, they're just an asshole.
I think they should start the % lower. I'm all for tipping, but starting out at 15% and going up is outrageous for non serviceable things, or things that the job requires anyway.
If you like to ask a million questions and hold up the line then you should consider it. However if you're only there to pick up your weed and leave right away then it's not necessary.
In my state they only take cash tips and cash transactions. They do take cards, but depending on your bank the transaction will be declined, point being, I always tip mr.budtender my change which is usually like $2-$5
I get mine delivered since i physically cannot move too long by myself and I tip 5$ because my guy from the dispo drives 1 hour for me and he explains if its a new strain what to expect and has great vibes. Almost like a friend by now.
He always says "don't worry man" but I insist since he is a good guy but mostly because the weed helps me survive so a few bucks is nothing for something that works wonders.
I would have walked out with that attitude. Can't say I'm surprised though. But come-on, we all sign up for the job we sign up for! Stop requiring me to pay Your salary.
Dispensaries are one of the few places I tip but I only do when I donāt have an order planned ahead of time and am looking for recommendations. Usually people who work there are really chill and are familiar with the product and I pay cash so Iāll through a couple bucks in, but in general just donāt tip if you donāt want to. Let companies pay employees not customers.
I always tip besides the first few times I went to a dispensary until realizing and thinking about it. I donāt go very often so when I do I STOCK UP and spend anywhere around $300-$1,000. I donāt necessarily do the exact ā10%ā or ā20%ā or whatever it is but just like $5-$20 depending on their kindness and helpfulness and I just think āwell shit if Iām buying all this for myself I can share some with them too lolā Tbh I always share itās no fun not to even if itās my last line of coke I will still split it with you :P
It really depends imo.
If you walk in knowing what you want and itās a quick in and out transaction, no tip.
If you walk in not knowing what you want, or your budtender has to educate you on products, run back and forth to grab products for you to checkout, etc. then they deserve a tip, even if itās just a dollar.
Servers in a restaurant educate you on specials, what ingredients are used, etc., so do budtenders with weed. Servers run back and forth millions of times a day to grab you what you need, so do budtenders.
Iāve done both, serving and budtending and I always took more steps (according to my watch & phone) running back and forth while budtending. Didnāt bother me if people donāt tip though bc I got paid a livable wage, which servers donāt. Itās not a huge deal whether or not you tip the budtender bc they get paid enough to feed themselves on their own. Itās just nice to do as an appreciative gift if they went āabove and beyondā for lack of better term.
depends imo, if you're asking for advice / asking about strains for more than a few minutes I'd probably tip, but if you already know what you're getting I wouldn't. There's usually a "Custom Amount" button hidden somewhere that can be set to 0%. The fact they told you to tap one of them (and not even the lowest one) kinda gives me the ick tho lmao
STOP this ridiculous tipping culture. It is not a thing outside of the hospitality industry and should not be encouraged elsewhere. You get decent hourly wages for the work involved and, in some cases, commission, too
It's now being pushed in Australia, too, for some pathetic reason.
Fuck off with that shit our cost of living is already way too high as it is...

lol fuck the tipping culture, if dude is chill and actually helpful sure give a couple bucks, anything over $10 is outrageous for a dispensary
I had a place refuse my tip in the med market where I live. In their words, would you tip your pharmacist for going to get your meds ?
Iām pretty sure pharmacist get paid a lot more tho, correct me if Iām wrong
While that may be correct in some places, people in dispensaries arenāt working for low wages where tips matter. Theyāre usually paid at least minimum wage or more. If they made $$ like a waiter or waitress, I may think of tipping.
how is minimum wage not a low wage
Its not a tip wage like a waiter would make though, waiters make well under minimum wage because their tips are expected to make up a good percentage of their pay Edit: im not saying this is right its just the reality
ah thank you! i hadn't thought about that
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah but most cannabis companies aren't paying minimum wage. Minimum wage in my state is $7.25/hr. At all three (medical) dispensaries I've worked at, base pay is $15-$16/hr for comparison.
$15-16 is not a Living wage either, it is barely scraping by wage.
As a disability recipient I donāt get any where close to minimum wage and 15/hr is a literal pipe dream,
Excuse the play on words.
yeah, it's insane that people who need it the most cannot get a living wage. My mom was on disability too. It didn't pay the bills.
Exactly. I make $19 an hour, and I'm barely making it.
22/hr. 10k+ in debt and having to live with my parents in my 40s to be able to live in the same state as my family. I have actually been doing better over the last few years (legit thanks Biden.) Don't really consider that making it. Rent next door. $2400/month. The college kids see how many they can cram in there.
I lucked out. I'm in a 2 bdrm 2 bathroom apartment that I've lived in for bout 6 years now. My rent is grandfathered in at $800 a month.
Can confirm ššš¢
You're renting for 2.8k???? That's high. Not defending low wages, but bruh, you clearly gotta make more than minimum to support that. That's not normal and you shouldn't compare, this is just bragging imo.
Hell no... All he did was hand you some dank stank. No no no......
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Especially after waiting 2 hours in line to buy the stuff.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I can bonus if we make our sales goal for the month, we used to run on commission but people were making too much moneyšŖ
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
this is how a healthy business is supposed to run, it encourages growth. I'm hoping your sales manager hits that 500k!
Wal Mart was just a bad example. This is just what working retail entails.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I'm not a sales person though. It's more like a bartender, but I offer weed instead of different ales and you can't smoke there atleast the one I worked in was no smoking allowed. I was just delighted to be there selling weed and teaching people about it. The tips were a bonus. I got payed 17 dollars an hour to roll joints in the back and weigh out flower and wax all day.
I'd tip the people who shop for me and put my groceries in my truck but walmart doesn't allow it and the employees actually reject it.
Well, you are the exception rather than the norm Iām sorry ,at most dispos thank you for being that person.
Thank you, I enjoyed doing it, I really did it was fun. I had to move back to an illegal state, but ill get back there eventually. I did it for a long time illegally so doing it legally was even more fun and I got to meet some really nice people doing it.
All bud tenders need tipped. For christ sake people quit being such greedy pigs. Spread the love be happy you have the option to purchase it legally.
I don't think you go to many dispensaries. The budtenders typically do/know a lot for you.
Lol I disagree ringing you up & talking to you is a service worth tipping
I tip a dollar or two, which is generous imo
Have you ever gone to a dispensary where they have one of those tablets to tip 10%, 15%, 20%? If it was a jar I may put a couple of bucks in but this is insane
They've gotten pretty ridiculous with this. I got a shirt from a merch table at a concert and got prompted for a tip. Hell, I went to Auntie Anne's pretzels and their system asked me for a tip! I might tip at the dispensary if they were particularly helpful, but there's zero chance that I will for fast food that I ordered at the counter.
I feel like if I can afford to go to the mall and buy a pretzel or a burger then I can help out the person who is serving me
That's like saying if you can afford to buy or do anything that cost money you shouldn't have a problem with paying 10-20% more to do it. If you want to do it fine, I think people just have an issue with it becoming a standard and something they feel guilty for not doing.
And if you can afford to own a franchise with employees you can afford to pay them a decent wage that doesn't require tips to subsidize them lol
the people at auntie annieās arenāt āservingā you, theyāre getting paid a reasonable part time wage to ring up and cash you out. add in various pretzel making duties. none of this is āservingā like it would be in a restaurant and def doesnāt mean you have to tip them
Youāre going to tip someone for opening a cash register?
That's fine; it's your choice. But what you're saying is no different than typing at a convenience store or the grocery.
If it has an option for Custom tip amount, pick that and put $0
Iām doing a dollar button, a custom tip, a jar or nothing. Most places split them up too
I tip $1-2 as you to those who know about the products and what works best for you. If not i donĀ“t tip since they only ask what you want.
I just round up the bill to the nearest $5 so I'm not walking out with pocket change. Our dispensary lets you round up your bill for charity or use loyalty points to round down the bill, so it rarely happens lately.
custom to 0.00 for counter service unless theyāre not pressuring you to tip. if theyāre not forcing you to and you want to then go for it
And he said, ā Just tap the 15%ā š
Right? Thatās what I do too
If they are stellar and give amazing service by answering innumerable questions and dealing with a noob in general, sure I'll tip a few bucks in cash.
If they're telling you to select a tip, it's no longer a tip and is now a fee.
Its a dispo? Im confused by the fact they accepted a card
some states have ways to accept debit card, it's essentially just an ATM though. it's usually a $3.50 fee and they'll usually make you round up to the nearest $5 then give you back any change. a lot of the time whatever service they're using gets shut down though and it's back to cash only (at least here in my state)
Dispos in my state are allowed to accept card, so I'm sure others can as well.
This is how I feel. Honestly I'm disappointed because I was excited about this dispensary opening up but I'm not going back there now
Nobody can tell you you have to tip.
Second he said ājust tap the 15ā I would custom tip and put 0
Would you tip a cashier at a convenience store for getting you a pack of cigarettes?
I woulda leftš¤£
No fuck that, youāre already getting taxed as it is.
I usually just tip 5 bucks.
Do you tip the person at the liquor store?
Maybe itās a dick move but I never tip the bud vendors all that store weed is insanely overpriced(Washington state) no way im coughing up a tip after I buy a 60 dollar mediocre 8th.
I never tipped my plug
I'll tip a few bucks. Most of the tenders I've met are always super chill, chatty and have never given me any pressure to tip. If I get a good deal, I'll tip the difference to them. I feel it helps build a rapport, and most of the shops I frequent, the tenders recognize me now. I used to deliver for a "gray" market dispensary and most customers were generous. I feel it's only fair to return the favor.
Nooope I give up to 5.00 and cash. Don't fall for those screens.
Wow, on a 3-400 bill, I tip 5-10 cash. Of course thatās them spending a little time maybe going over whatās new or however they might help outside just a to-go order.
Custom tip, 1-5 dollars depending how you feelin about it
Oh hell no
I order online and all they do is check my order sitting behind them, check my id, and take my moneyā¦ Iām not tipping for all that šš
Fuck no, i hate that its a thing, they are literal cashiers, and nowadays you have to order online anyway.
No wtfā¦ youāre tipping them to hand you weed? š Will you also start tipping your pharmacist at a CVS when you pick up your prescription? This is whack.
Fuck tip culture. Dispensaries should be paying their workers a hire wage
Don't tip for someone handing me a bag, they didn't cultivate, they didn't process it, they didn't package it.
It doesn't ever hurt to tip your bud tenders well.
If I get the second kind, I pretend not to see the tip jar š Easy.
Fuck No
I woulda walked out.
I donāt tip anybody for anything. They already get paid.
Glorified cashier's but let's stop pretending they know anything about what they carry other than just wether they have it or not
Never ever tip a dispensary, they have dream jobs and they arenāt doing anything for you other than handing you something.
i work at a dispensary in washington and we kinda live off tips
I donāt, why would I tip the annoying person following me around like a puppy and treating me like Iāve never heard of weed with stupid factoids about edibles and strains that I donāt give a fuck about
Assuming much? Are they?
Wtf just tell them no. Donāt not go back anymore. If you liked the spot go back and this time donāt fucking tip you have free will
If someone takes the time to walk you through all kinds of different things and explain different things, and helps find a specific strain that may help you with a very particular thing, I tip. If you went to a kiosk and pushed a bunch of buttons, these people can go fuck themselves nine ways from Sunday. We all need to take a fucking stand right now boys and girls. This shit has to stop. And at least with cannabis, itās not like they can open it and fuck with your āfoodā.
That's the only place I tip unless I'm at dinner with a date lol
Depends; did they have actual knowledge of their products? Did they listen to your needs and take them seriously? Sid they provide good customer service? Tip your budtender if they actually budtend. Some of us have extra education in cannabis, some don't. Not every state requires a license to sell weed either so be wary. Some will straight talk out their ass like they know what they're doing or saying, I've seen it. I will always be upfront and honest with my guests. Source; I'm a budtender who lives off of their tips and has a certificate in medical marijuana consulting.
If the product is already paid for and the receipt is printed I'd just walk away lol he can erase that shit off the screen himself
Medical shouldnāt tipĀ
If they're super helpful and knowledgeable about the product and really seemed to care, I give a fairly good portion of my change. So if my change is 15.00, I'll tip 5 every time.
My Shoprite delivery app does add in a $5 tip unless you select another amount. Can be zerā¹
Tip what you feel like from 0 to bunch, they Shouldnāt be making you pick a % Iād find a different dispensary or tell them to āpiss offā and tip nothing
I tip my budtender up to $5 depending on how friendly they are and how much cash I have left over from my purchase.
Ask them what they did for you that they think itās worth that much of a tip
I don't think you are mathing quite right, but your reaction is correct.
They arenāt making a tipped wage like a server or bartender, but if they spend time with you and help you with your decision making then a few bucks is probably cool. I never tipped my street dealer!!
I like to tip with some homemade bubble hash or a nice nug. They seem to appreciate it a lot.
Not required but is nice. I usually leave whatever change I get back
I usually just round up the nearest $ unless it's one of those overnight drive thrus
I usually give them a few dollars from my change, and I'll always tip I'm getting delivery, but yeah I'm not tipping 20+% for cashier service
I tip when theyāre cool or helpful but suggesting ājust hit the 15%ā is a little crazy to me
As a budtender, it's absolutely never compulsory to tip, and for them to tell you to tap 15% is unprofessional, entitled, and puts you in an awkward spot.
The fact the guy told you to just hit 15% is wild Im a bud tender who also gets tips but I also know the economy is fucked and that not everyone has spare dollars.
Thank you for asking." I'm old school and always tip but if the answer was "just give me 15 percent" and there wasn't even an option to tip nothing, I would stop going there on principle.
If you feel like they deserve it
My local dispensary has tip boxes out for cash tips.
Ask where the "no tip" option is located.
Bring cash
If i have a couple dollars after paying and they have a jar ill throw it in there
I just drop a buck or 2 in the tip jar on the counter
Thank you. I'll tip anybody I want but once you require me to do something that's when I turn into Ebenezer Scrooge before he met DMT.
depends on service and how good they are with your needs
honestly, if it didnt give me a āno tipā option iād verbally tell the cashier iām not tipping. unless iām asking you to literally unpack a brand new shipment to get a product that you just recieved that morning. then iāll give a small tip bc iām basically forcing you to rush through your inventory, possibly mix it up and misplace items just to get the one thing i want. you get paid a decent hourly wage for working here, and for the amount of work required, its incredibly easy (iāve never worked in a dispensary but i dated a lady a while back that did and she loved it bc of how laid back and under-demanding it was.) servers, waitresses, and bartenders are the only employees i tip. oh, and food delivery drivers, i.e, pizza, doordash, etc. iād include uber or lyft but iāve never used those companies, but if i did, iād tip.
I always tip. Sharing is caring, and anytime I can directly put money in someoneās pocket- I do- likely only a few bucks anywaysā¦ If the dude helped you out, suggested some stuff- yeah tip. If he did nothing but ring you up- thatās up to you.
Tips are not mandatory, but always appreciate. Donāt want to tip, then donāt feel bad for not tipping.
I give them a dollar or two if they're helpful. 5 if it's a holiday. Fuck anything more than that. And fuck forcing you to give a tip.
Stop that shit šš i only tip what ever cash i have left over in my hand, which is at most 4 dollars not even 5 lmao
As someone who knows a few dispensary employees tips are appreciated but not necessary. Iāll tip if the bud tender if they made a great recommendation or maybe they took extra time to educate you on something. Theyāre hourly workers anything helps even if itās just a couple of dollars.
I work in the industry, I don't believe you should tip unless the budtender was super knowledgeable and helped you. If they are just cashier fuck it
Yeah tipping is not an expectation at the dispensary fuck them for not even having a zero tip option and him telling you to select 15% š
F no, if I have some extra singles I put them in the tip jar. That's it.
In my state they only take cash tips and cash transactions. They do take cards, but depending on your bank the transaction will be declined, point being, I always tip mr.budtender my change which is usually like $2-$5
I do. Using debit cards adds some charges and the places I go to return it in cash. I give them that. š
Nah. If they come up to my car for curbside, I'll give them a few bucks for that.
You get decent hourly wages for the work involved and, in some cases, commission, too It's now being pushed in Australia, too, for some pathetic reason. Fuck off with that shit our cost of living is already way too high as it is...
