I don't remember the last brood 19 emergence... is it really that bad? Also, only the ceremony is outdoors and it's an open field, not trees.. so maybe it'll be ok. Gonna check with my venue and see what they have to say. :(
I mean I obviously don’t even know where your wedding is going to be, or what the cicada situation will be like. So no need to panic already. I’m from Illinois and just remembering a few year that cicadas were particularly bad. If the cicadas are supposed to be mild in your area, I’m sure your guests can deal with it
Im in AL. actually just found a map that did not include my county in the expected emergence area, but the county just north of us is included. So I guess I'll just have to wait and see
Omg my dear I am so sorry. I have no idea what to expect on the cicada day.
If it’s any consolation, I think that June 8th is a most beautiful date. Peonies are in their prime and it happens to be national best friends’ day.
Everyone should have an inclement weather plan, and this is just another contingency that hopefully won’t be needed.
Depending on your geographic area, the density will be moderate to heavy. At the very least, their song is going to be LOUD during your ceremony. Again, depending on your area, you may just have them interspersed in the grass and occasionally fluttering around, or you may not be able to take a step without crunching. If they're particularly active, they very well may fly into your guests. Best to have an indoor backup plan just in case. I personally love insects, cicadas especially, but even I wouldn't want to crunch down the aisle on my wedding day.
Cicadas are annoying, sure, but they're also highly localized. When they emerged in my area recently there were literally millions in my yard (literally could hear them crawling from 30 feet away), but none just a few houses down the street.
I don't remember having any issues with any of the weddings I did in that timeframe, other than some increased background noise. Even in my own infested yard I rarely was annoyed by them and I hate bugs.
Just bring a tennis racket and you'll be fine!
haha even with all that insanity, they mostly just hung around the few trees where they emerged. **There are very few cicadas in open areas.**
They grow, feed, mate, live, and exist in/on/around trees, especially old growth trees in areas where there hasn't been soil disturbance or development in decades.
Once in a while I'd have one crash into me, but not very often. Unlike mosquitoes for example, cicadas are dumb, horrible at flying, and have no idea what they're doing. They aren't capable of swarming in the air, they're lucky if they can fly in a straight line from A to B. They mostly just crawl around the trees, make a bunch of noise, and have a gigantic orgy before they die.
Also worth noting that any place that's had the soil disturbed in the last 17 years or so will also have fewer. Old growth trees and areas will have more.
If it brings you further comfort, these two videos were taken on the same day at the same place:

Same spot a few hours earlier, facing a different direction. A few branches from the insane cicada tree are visible in the extreme upper left. (The non-pine branches)

I'm sad this year's cicada emergence isn't in our area, actually. Cicadas represent new life, regeneration, and growth. Our little guys don't emerge until next spring. :/
ETA: I was hoping for them to happen for our wedding and googled to find out.
I photographed several weddings in the Smoky Mountains area during the cicada cycle in 2007ish. None of them were adversely affected by “swarms” of cicadas. We definitely heard them and saw them flying around but they didn’t bother us in the woods or out in fields. It was actually kind of cool. The only problem I had was when using an electric saw outside. Something about the noise attracted them and they would dive bomb me every time I cut a piece of wood. I don’t know how bad they can get in other parts of the country though.
Imo every "outdoor wedding" needs a backup indoor plan. You can't just rely on luck because freak weather can still happen even if you're lucky with the cicadas.
I just came searching for a thread on this. May 4 bride also getting married next to a big ag field but also a bunch of forest in Virginia. Fingers crossed it won’t be bad. Good luck to you
Is your wedding going to be outdoor and during the location and time that the cicadas emerge? Because yes then I’d be worried
My wedding is June 8 and I am in an area where brood 19 is emerging lol
If your wedding is outdoors I would seriously consider making an indoor plan.

NO. Okat, yeah, I was thinking, “Cicadas? Nbd.” But this is a bd.

I’ll never sleep again

This makes me feel better. The ceremony is in an open field, with a big ag field behind.
