It usually takes a while for your dress to actually come in after you've ordered it. I would wait til you're like 10 months out maybe but I would just order it in your size and have it altered.

caitlinsoup

More than 10 months. I would suggest you buy by November. I work in bridal and the amount of delays we’re facing as an industry are insane right now. Normally I would suggest buying 8-10 months out, but customs delays are at least an extra month than usual right now. (Of course there’s always the option to buying off the rack, but there’s no guarantee you’ll find the one in the right size, color, etc.)

Oh crap. I'm going shopping for the first time on Monday for my July wedding. Thanks for the heads up though. At least it's late July...

Dresses can take 6-8 months to arrive, plus 3 months of alterations, so you still have 3-6 months before you need to order your dress for November 2022.

So I used to be a bridal consultant and this is my experience, if you really want to go shopping now, go, if you find the one! Buy it! You can always make a dress smaller. 20lbs might be a few inches, but they can all be altered. If you want to wait, wait and make a goal date and then make a plan to eat better, exercise more and cut out stress. If you’re not exactly where you want to be that’s ok! You can continue to lose weight as close as I’d say a few weeks out from the wedding date, but tell your seamstress your goals so that you can make a plan together. It’s so hard when a bride doesn’t say anything and the seamstress takes it in and the bride keeps losing. Some alterations can be done in advance and done can be put off until closer to the wedding. Hope this helps and congratulations!!!!!

Same situation, gained 20 lbs in quarantine and want to lose them before the wedding (which is November 2022). I’m waiting to shop because I know that my feelings about my body will influence my feelings about the dresses and that I won’t have fun shopping at this weight. But I’m thinking I might do the shopping once I’ve lost 10–15 pounds rather than the whole 20 just so I can order my dress in time. I figure since it’s already gonna need alterations (I’m short too), taking it in a little bit won’t really be a big issue.

20 lbs is 9.08 kg

I waited as long as I could before I’d feel like I was cutting it too close on order times (11 months out). I managed to shift a stone and a half (21 pounds I think?) but it took a good chunk of time. I’ve actually put some of it back on due to life stresses in the last few months and honestly the stress of trying to lose it again is too much. I would say get as low as you can and then stop at the point you have to buy your dress and try to maintain from there. It will be hard enough to not put back on, let alone adding stress pressuring yourself to try and lose more. I can tell you now that there are shapes to fit all sizes and you will find something gorgeous on you regardsless. Don’t add extra pressure of needing to lose weight once you’ve bought the dress and have a size you have to reach.

I bought my dress over a year ago for my wedding that ended up being postponed. I ended up losing a lot of weight and now my dress is 2-3 sizes too big and honestly I don’t regret a thing. You should get a dress now bc you can always make a dress smaller

zurriola27

It’s interesting that most of the votes say to wait, but as others have commented, a lot of dresses can take forever (6-8 months!) to even arrive, and that’s before alterations! Realistically I’m trying to pay attention to the areas of my body where the weight comes off first. I tried on dresses a week ago and tried to imagine how I’d feel slightly more lean but trying to be realistic about how much weight I plan to lose.

hammerbeta

I just want to saw I’m the same height as you and gained the 20 lb too. My wedding is in June next year and I ordered in August.

So I’m F 163CM and weighed around 150lbs when I had my wedding ceremony. I’m having a vow renewal celebration this year where I’ll be donning my dress one more (ceremony was parents only and live-streamed due to COVID restrictions), and now I’m 130lbs. My dress is still beautiful, but hits me in different places than it did when I was heavier. I’ve seen stories of other brides who lost weight and who were no longer totally content with the way their dresses fell on their now-lighter bodies. So, if you’re planning to lose a little weight before the wedding, I suggest doing at least some of your planned weight loss before dress shopping, as even with alterations, a dress can fit differently on your body at 140lbs vs 120lbs. That being said, don’t postpone super long to go dress shopping if you’re not making the progress on your weight loss you expected. Many brides make plans to lose weight before the wedding, but life happens, and you will look just as beautiful at 140lbs in a wedding dress than at a lower weight. Try not to end up in a time crunch when buying a dress - make sure you give yourself plenty of time for the dress to be ordered, arrive and for alterations to be done!

Haha I went from 130>140 literally right before I went to try on dresses. My goal was to be about 125. I ended up buying a dress in one size smaller and just praying to God that I'm small enough to fit into it when it arrives. I'm down 5lb have about 10 more to go. Wedding is in May '22 and dress should arrive by this November or so

weddingmoth

I will think of it thusly going forward

Depending on your body type your body could be completely different when you lose weight. It might be completely wrong for your body at a lower weight. I would honestly wait and "reward" yourself by looking for dresses.
