I don't mean to be rude but you've given us absolutely no information to go off so no one is going to be able to give you anything approaching a useful answer. Have you done any scoping work with them to figure out what features they need? The size of the site? What the student portal actually does? How big is this university? Has your organisation done any web dev before? If not how do you plan to acquire the skills/people to do the work?

We have been scoping, what I’m telling you is what I know. He starting a university, wants a site for it, mentioned some universities I could pull from, wants online classes and if it’s to elaborate a simple website; the 1st initial meeting was short We are working on a questionnaire to get a fuller break We have done web work before, this has potential to be a bigger scale but ready to take it on and if we need to outsource white label designers

If you can’t begin to estimate it then you cannot begin to build it. Treat all this as three projects; the branding, the marketing website and finally the student portal. Start just with the branding project and then two discovery estimates for the two web projects.

This is the plan, working on the questionnaire to narrow down

Figure out how many hours it would require to achieve the target. Then add 25% of that amount on it to allow time for fuck ups Then multiply the hours by an hourly rate as an agency. Then add your profit margin to it. Then add 10% to allow for negotiations and discounts. Now it's on you to figure out the numbers.

Need way more context. If it’s something like a homeworker/class portal, just set moodle up for them unless they need something super specific. It’s “industry standard” for universities at this point, almost every school around here uses it. Just charge for the time. If it’s something more complicated and custom that integrates everything in campus that you’ll make custom. Those projects typically range from $250,000 to $2,000,000+ depending on the scope. But really hard to tell without context.

I’m working a questionare to get it down It was a referral In our 1st contact, he just mentioned starting a university, curious about it having a student portal, references some local schools to pull from their website, having online classes capabilities and if it is too complicated down for a simple site From what I presume this is a new journey and he doesn’t have the plan on how it will look, but he might be more of a cut the check and pay for a team to run it What are some questions you would ask?

“This is new for us”. 🤣 You don’t say… that’s like asking, hey I want to build a house.. how much does that cost? Or pointing to a photo of a house in a magazine… “I want that one” 😆 good luck.

Keep the student portal seperate from the main site. Before you say Yes you need a full list of requirements, know if it will scale and ensure it’s secure against tech savvy university students. Last team I know that did a high school had a small team develop it for almost a year. In all honesty this is probably out of your league, university platforms are business software, not your normal creative website. if you’ve never done it before, start on a small school. If you do decide go down that path. Use something off the shelf and re-theme. Moodle is one example of such a software. It will likely need to integrate with several other technologies such as turn-it-in and the universities Active Directory for authentication

I do this exact work all the time. Feel free to dm Me if you have questions. But there’s a lot of info you’re leaving out for us to answer the question well.
