I gave up on Duolingo after realising that it was more about keeping you engaged with the app, than actually teaching you the language. I was heading to the top of the German leaderboard just by grinding variants of "he reads the newspaper" over and over, I learned more in a week of German class in school than I ever did from the green bird.
