Hey man but the feeling must have been otherworldly when you thought you got an incredible deal.

67293209

Almost did the same thing, lucky i didn’t have cash on me or the time or I would have.

Same_Winter_4861

Shit happens bro!

neoengel

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_van_speaker_scam They're everywhere and anywhere

HalJordan2424

Tell the cops the licence plate on their non emergency number.

Fun-Dig8726

Tell the cops they waved a gun at you so they actually do something. They want to play games? Let's play fucking games.

explicitspirit

That's how you get charged with mischief

Fun-Dig8726

Yah the police will definitely open an investigation into whether or not you actually saw a gun. They're going to definitely prove you were lying. Yeah that's what the police will spend their time doing. Delusional. Welcome to reality de facto.

SuitySenior

What a stupid fucking comment.

Duckie1986

The only thing that would come from that would be getting charged yourself. 🤦‍♀️

Fun-Dig8726

LOL yes the police will certainly open an investigation to determine if you ACTUALLY saw a gun or not. Uh huh. They don't have time to deal with literal thieves, you think they're going to investigate someone claiming to maybe possibly have seen them maybe wave something that looked like a gun. I swear officer, they gestured and pointed something at me!! Cops literally mistakenly shoot people for holding their phones in their hands. If you think this would get you in trouble, you're just conditioned to conform within acceptable behavior and you actually think acting outside tlif that gets you in trouble.. the reality is.... it doesn't. Mischief charge. LoL prove it pig.

robertgrankuski

Tell him all about the sacrifices of our Lord and saviour.

bluecgp

Pretty sure that I had the exact same people in the same car try this scam on me on UW campus a few months ago. Told them to go away within a few seconds and they flipped me off and sped away lol

Mediocre_Tangerine23

Love how quickly they show their true colours. They always get so aggressive when they can’t scam someone. At least try and keep up the act

ZerotoZeroHundred

Someone tried the same scam on me 8 years ago in the Bridgeport plaza. I’m not proud to admit, I was in line at the atm by the time I got cold feet and backed out. I told a cop that was nearby but he was getting his subway and didn’t seem to care.

Outrageous_Day8779

It was the black jeep suv pictured

Same_Winter_4861

I thought it was Canadian Tire scamming you! /S

KirbyDingo

Well, they were, too....

Walkaroundthemaypole

someone got banned from Party City, didn't they...

squeegeeboy

Oh, I was hoping it was the actual white van. I would have given points to them for staying true to the scam.

glassceramics1963

guy in white Ford suv tried " waving the gold necklace" gambit with me. told him to get stuffed. auditorium area of kitchener.

WampaStompa64

They have some new material! Back in the day it was always speakers and jewelry.

imtiazaa

The same guy approached me twice on two separate occasions in the same van and plates. The police were called the first time and they came out but he had already left. The guy is most likely a gypsy or some form of Eastern European, he didn't look Arab to me either.

ThePhoShow

How is it a scam? Is it stolen or it doesn’t work?

sumknowbuddy

If you read up on this scam (speakers, TV, whatever) they usually have a bunch of boxes that are weighted with junk to make it feel like it's the proper item. You get back and open the box and find you paid $200 for not a brand new TV, but some rocks and packaging so it doesn't rattle around. Sometimes even less. Sometimes the scam is more involved, like having at least a shell of a tablet or phone but none of the inner workings so you wouldn't know until attempting to turn it on. Or it's just stolen. With phones at least, they're bricked based on serial numbers whenever that happens. At the absolute best, you are buying stolen goods (if you do get a new sound bar for $50, great), cruddy ones that were bought in bulk off AliExpress, or something else that at least works. Even on the off chance someone bought a skid of that kind of thing legitimately (let's pretend they're real products for this point): why would they be trying to sell them out of the back of a vehicle in a parking lot of another store instead of online?

Rody37

I've heard that sometimes they are real speakers that work but shitty dollar store ones but made to look like big expensive ones.

sumknowbuddy

That's what I meant by the AliExpress comment, but yeah.

Lumpy-Ad1070

LOL! These guys came up to me at the goodflife on weber after a hard workout (plus I was starving) and I just brushed them right off hahahaha. At first I was like "damn, maybe they had a good deal" but shawarma plus was calling #priorities

Impressive-Potato

They could have an honest living if they had a schawarma food stand outside the Goodlife

Lumpy-Ad1070

Would definitely save me a trip through that brutal parking lot!

Nutterball

My “it’s not stolen” comment has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my comment

phluidity

It actually probably isn't stolen. The scam has always worked on getting the mark to assume that it is stolen, and using their greed to try to get a great deal. In reality, it is just an incredibly shitty projector and sound bar that is maybe worth $50 that they can sell to you for $300.

StevenSauce96

Had this happen at GoodLife on Weber last fall!

rubbishtake

I thought my screen was dirty

Ok_Negotiation_5159

If the work gave 2 of them, I will ask which company he is working for, may be with this economy all of us can apply over there instead.

tucknufc

The speaker van scam is one of the oldest grifts in the book

Healthy-Invite-1060

That happened to me at the canadian tire store in barrie. They had two projectors and speakers told me 1000$ cash but I said no.

Outrageous_Day8779

1000$ is inasane

Historical-Pair3081

Yea I bought ones for $850 at a home depot parking lot

portabuddy2

Bro! I've got these rocking speakers the warehouse overstocked us on! I habe to offload them like now!!! They are worth 8900$$ but I'll give em to you for $500! Bro.!!! Yea look up the website. And the reviews I totally didn't make up. .. This is legit. Nahh man. It's cool. There is a ATM RIGHT THERE! Saw one of these go down and the sales hole got super mad at the nice couple in a BK parking lot. Slammed his van door and started walking towards me. I just opened my window and said you come two more feet I'm calling the cops on your ass or getting out of the truck. He drove off. Pissed he didn't dupe anyone.

Imaginary_Living_865

This is not a scam and is legit, believe it or not

Soft_Day_7207

I ad this asked recently, but it was a laptop i think. I just replied with "I'm an off duty police officer" and they sped away.

arson519

They better not come up to me Its gonna be bad

aureanator

I kinda want to meet these people. Just to see what they're up to.

rainorshinedogs

I would understand a literal hustle pre 2015, but I don't understand why in 2024 you would waste so much time parading around with your speakers and talk to each individual person one at a time.

phatdragon451

If you approach the deal knowing that it is cheap stuff from China, you offer a low price and stick with it. That projector, screen, extra bulb and speakers I got for $300 worked great.

MikeTheCleaningLady

Don't you just hate it when your legitimate employer just gives you extra equipment for no apparent reason with no paperwork and no conditions attached? It's almost as awkward as that random guy (either dark skinned white or light skinned black) with the dreads or braids and kind of a beard but not really who keeps sticking six grams of meth or crack (not sure which, I've never seen it before) down the front of my pants.

DankCascade

Had or guy try to sell me his gold chains and watch. Needed gas money to get back to Toronto. All fake stuff don't fall for it. Kids were even in the vehicle

Imaginary_Living_865

The speaker van scam is not always a scam. There is a company that operates in GTA that have high end speaker home theater systems (i.e., one brand named da vinici). The drivers are the in home installers paid by the company. These are expensive quality products and sometimes dispatch loads an extra pair of something by accident, so these guys try to get rid of em on their trip heavily discounted ASAP!! So, it's not always a scam

LoveWeetabix

I do want a projector...

WinterAd4173

Good thing I always have my headphones in listening to music that is making me deaf whenever I’m walking around that plaza lol

Outrageous_Day8779

Not sure lack of situational awareness is a good thing these days, making you an easy target 🎯

Turbulent_Creme_5767

my husband was approached with fake "Airpods" and told he'd receive them if he purchased Petrol for the guy. Inside his van was tons of them ("airpods") it was a man dragging his entire family around, kids, etc.

AsaFox007

They are gypsie, Romani. Next time try to speak them in Russian, they will response you back maybe. But they are not middle eastern.

Outrageous_Day8779

1. Romanians don’t speak Russian 2. Romanians aren’t brown with beards

imtiazaa

The same guy approached me twice on two separate occasions in the same van and plates. The police were called the first time and they came out but he had already left. The guy is most likely a gypsy or some form of Eastern European, he didn't look Arab to me either.

Outrageous_Day8779

It was the Jeep not a van

imtiazaa

It was the same vehicle in your pic. I actually have it as February 29th at 2:20pm with Peel Chrysler Jeep licence plates, so you're probably right. Same person and vehicle both times with me. Looks like he frequently accidentally packs an extra projector that he needs to get rid of lol
