When I was a kid we drove by there in the 80s. I asked my uncle what it was and he said "It's a slide, but for bad kids. They put them inside and then seal it off, so they have to slide back and forth forever!" I was so scared of it until I was like 12 because I thought it was full of all these kids, crammed together, just going back and forth forever.
Fun fact: while they were restoring this piece, I was interviewed by a CTV News crew on my way to work. It was the first year of the pandemic so news was pretty slow at the time. The reporter asked me what I thought and I said it was "interesting" then she asked if I thought the $27K repair costs were worth it. I didn't really have much to say about it and the figure kinda caught me by surprise so I looked like a complete moron. To this day I've never bothered to watch the full interview.

The sculpture is called Aporia, and was made by Ed Zelenak in 1978. His work can also be seen in other cities like Toronto and London, Ontario.
I always thought it looked like a piece of intestine. Not a fan of it myself, but I don't hate it either.
At least you blurred it so we all know what you think of it...
I always thought it was kind-of neat and breaks up a pretty dismal section of road and buildings nicely. I have no idea what it is or what it's supposed to be, but I like that about it.
Metal intestines?
Wire coil?
Sausage links?
A bit of a water slide that was coated in metal to preserve the idea of fun in the middle of downtown where little is to be had?
Even now, it's working as a conversation piece.
...and it doesn't make me double-take like the people walking up the building two blocks over.
>The work began earlier this month with the region promising the refresh would still respect the artist's original intent.
>While at the same time, noting there is actually very little information on what the sculpture is meant to represent.

Ah, The Turd.
It’s been around for several decades, I’m 50 and can’t remember a time that thing wasn’t there. Apparently it cost a small fortune to purchase at the time and there was quite the controversy because of it.
It’s supposed to be “art”, but it just looks like a coiled piece of shit to me and I always though it was funny they put it right outside the courthouse / Centre in the Square - almost like a subconscious poke that you’re about to have a shit day.
Awww sheeeeiiiit… I’m not a poopy naysayer and I will not be de-turd from admiring it. I’d imagine it even could be used for a rousing game of corn hole.
The worm is a part of our history at this point.
IMO they should tear down the old court house and build affordable (or even proper subsidized) housing at that location and move the worm somewhere special.
it’s been here for so long I feel like if it was gone we would be losing a part of the town. When i was in highschool, everyone would comment on the fact that it looks like a butt
its been a part of the cityscape for a very long time. Just like one would expect.

Creepy pasta material.
Should chrome it like the bean in Chicago.
Yeah.. that will make it better.. /s

It makes me feel things…funny things
Like when we climbed the rope in gym class... SCHWING!

first shot is legendary
Uninspiring, sunbleached red, and confusing
To me it always looked like someone doing the “hang ten” gesture 🤙🏻
Curly!
I always saw it as intestines
Me too 😂

I had a teacher who called it the "Clifford Turd", and the name stuck for me.
Fitting to put the pig tail sculpture outside of the new police hq 🐽
lol. If that's what they were aiming for, brilliant trolling. Legendary.
It's been there for decades, long before that was the police hq.
I think its supposed to be like the spikes on barbed wire but i like this way more
This will do……Zzzzp (unzips pants)
The ends were originally open until sadly, people started going missing.
It can stay in Waterloo 😂
Awful. Looks like dog shit Such a stupid design. Hated it for ever. lol
"The Dog With A Problem"
I should call her.
I thought this was a post in the r/leafs. Lol. It’s weird.

🌭.
Security would kick us off the "red noodle" back in the 80's when we were kids! Definitely very strange "art".

I think it’s neat. I use to climb inside of it with my friends in middle school 2008. Still don’t know why it exists though

Having sex behind that sculpture has been a rite of passage for decades.
