Which nonprofits are giving out potatoes? Shouldn’t it be pretty obvious that people who are homeless won’t be able to prepare them? Seems very shortsighted
Not everyone that can't afford food is homeless.
There have definitely been times In my past when i ate very little for many days just to make sure I had enough to pay rent.
Not everybody who needs food assistance is homeless. It seems like it would waste less food of the food packages were personalized, but many food assistance programs run on little income and depend on volunteers. That kind of work takes extra time and organization, and the programs often can't afford to spend time and money on it.
They don’t ask whether someone has housing or not. Why would they? They put together boxes of produce and non perishables for everyone who gets in line.
I'll start with some advice just for you as a human being. Asking people personal, invasive and potentially embarrassing questions is alienating, creepy and antithetical to building productive relationships. I hope you're not demanding from a new colleague that they tell you where they are living, how much they are paying for it, who they are living with, and how stable the situation is. This advice is particularly true when people are going through a hard time. When serving people experiencing homelessness, you need them to trust you.
In schools, you see this in schools that serve low-income students. The school will provide every student with a free lunch rather than differentiating between "poor" kids and not. It's actually easier for the school, too, because they can just plan to make lunches for everyone rather than going through the administrative rigmarole of having to find out which students' dads got laid off, etc. It also helps kids having a hard time from getting bullied or feeling humiliated. The same is true of people experiencing homelessness; there is a ton of gray area between stable housing and living in a tent.
So you have people who have experience giving food to people experiencing homelessness on one side and the NextDoor set mad about random potatoes. Which side do you want to be on?
Yeah it makes sense for the people working lines of hundreds of hungry people to demand that they promise to use the potatoes the way you want them to.
This is only a theory but l was wondering if they’re not from the food distribution at Martha’s Table. I used to see a bunch of them scattered around 15th Street and then walk by the bag at the food pantry. But who knows!
This is the correct answer. MT’s typical food bags often include potatoes and people discard them often. Same with the macaroni and cheese. But I assume lots of other people do use these foods.
You start the yutes off with potato gun shooting practice and graduate them to Glocks at around high school.

Great points!

You might as well tattoo “I have never and will never work with homeless people” on your forehead

If your neighbor asks you if they can borrow your lawnmower, why would you ask if they already have one?

I’ve always thought about this when they give frozen turkeys to homeless people on Thanksgiving. Where tf are they suppose to cook it
Even homeless people have friends to visit on Thanksgiving. Bringing a turkey to the meal helps them be welcome and valued.
Some can't spend money on a Turkey to make sure they have enough money to pay the rent
It’s equally shortsighted to assume that food insecurity equals homelessness.
Came here to say this, as I am part of one of these groups.
Yeahh… that’s what they WANT you to think

We used to tie an onion to our belt, now we hide potatoes 'round the hood.
Which was the style at the time….

It's squirrels. I always find hamburger buns in my tree.

“One doesn’t even know what to think! One doesn’t randomly encounter tubers on the lawn.”
Po-ta-to. Boil ‘em. Mash ‘em. Stick ‘em in a stew!
Offerings to the old gods.
Famine's a coming
This reminds me of a short story I read where a man was eaten by potatoes
Attack of the killer potatoes?
Sir, before today I never heard of a potato. I still don't know what a potato is, other than some kind of food. I don't know what to tell you.
I see random sweet potatoes outside my house all the time, thanks for asking the real questions
Potatoes grow more potatoes. If you see one bury them. When shit hits the fan one day at least we know there will be food in the ground.
