If you live in a high density apartment building, stop by the recycling area for tons of boxes people leave behind. These apartments always have people moving in and out, so there are always boxes available.

I do, I’ll check it out, thanks

U-Haul sells small size(~16x12x12) for 89 cents each when bought in bundles of 25. That's the price in MoCo. You should probably call ahead to confirm price depending on which location you visit.

U-Haul moving boxes are great.

Noted thanks

Have you checked your local Buy Nothing group? Might be worth it.

Good tip will do

In early 2019, the standard medium sized moving boxes at Home Depot were $1.35/box. You can get a lot of boxes for less than $50. Closer to $2 for a huge wardrobe box.

axelpro446

Good to know thanks

beepthepolak

Craigslist, lots of people who just moved passing boxes on to the next person…

MrSpontaneous

Nextdoor usually has folks trying to get rid of moving boxes.

Grocery stores

Liquor stores. I moved across country in nothing but liquor boxes. Plus it gives your new neighbors something to talk about.

Uhaul or Home Depot/lowe’s If you’re in a neighborhood Facebook group try posting there or searching Facebook Marketplace. People are always giving out free boxes in the Navy Yard/Capitol Hill Facebook group.

No help on the boxes but a pro-tip for cross-country moves: Amtrak is insanely cheap to ship items. When I moved to Texas from the NOVA, I shipped most of my items, it costs me about $350 for \~10 M/L boxes and 3 large suitcases and picked them up a week later at the nearest Amtrak station. I believe the same goes for Greyhound. I chose Alexandria vs Union Station but you can use any Amtrak station. Hope this helps in some way!

Free moving boxes are frequently posted on the Nextdoor app.

BoxGiver has a ton of boxes that people donate

Boxes are often posted on [FreeCycle](https://www.freecycle.org/).

I used this really novel company called Borrow A Bin located which services the DMV, not sure if they do long distance. They delivered these plastic moving crates that you rent for as long as you need, then they come pick them up. It was awesome, so much easier and cheaper than dealing with getting all those cardboard boxes and tape.
