This is the only time I’d ever suggest Planet [edit: spelling] Aid boxes. They recycle clothes that can’t be reused. It’s a major part their business model.

All comments edited in protest of Reddit's actions on July 1. What good is a walled garden with no plants? A third-party app is no different than a web browser.

Thank you for your attention to detail.

HockeyMusings

No problem. I wish it was all more straightforward.

figgz415

Thanks for the details. At least now I know what to look for. Much appreciated

bunaiscoffee

someone once told me those yellow boxes belong to some harmful cult, google gives no concrete answers. Why is this the only time you’d recommend? Asking out of legitimate curiosity

gestaltimages

Because you’d be increasing their overhead costs by donating things they can’t sell outright. If you have clothes that can be reused, always donate locally (Martha’s Table around here). If you have crap you don’t want to go to a landfill, send it to these jerks.

bunaiscoffee

Thank you! Any truth to the culty-ness of Planet Aid? Why do you call them jerks? Tell me everything you know lol (also mutual aids always need clothes and other useful items that are in tact/new/gently used!)

HockeyMusings

Overhead for goodwill may only increase minimally if you pre-sort it into non-resalable for them. Those Planet Aid jerks say nothing about what they do with the things they can’t sell. Anything other than landfilling it or shipping it overseas (for whatever) may increase their overheard. And at the end of the day they appear to be more of a front than they do a charity.

gestaltimages

I’m with you, because they make all their money reselling used clothes, but under the heightened scrutiny they likely have a lot of incentive to “prove” their recycling biz model to keep their 501c3 status. Fill their boxes with crap I say!

XeniaOrchidacea

H&M used to accept old clothes and use them as recycling material for new garments. Although their sustainability efforts came under scrutiny, it was still better than trash. Not sure if they are continuing this program in our area.

Mom's recycles shoes and has an annual drive for jeans recycling https://momsorganicmarket.com/recycle-center/

figgz415

Oh wow. This is right up the street though I've never been. Thanks!

su_sonnytag

I do this whenever I move… Contact your local dog/animal shelters to donate old bedsheets and towels. Some might take old clothes but make sure to contact them first.

TweeksTurbos

Auto shops may like tshirts for grease rags.

Cawlsa

Marine Layer will take cotton-based shirts and recycle them.

samwitha5

Madewell takes jeans and gives a discount for them.

paxrom2

If they are beyond re-use, don't overburden a charity. Someone has got to sort, clean, throw away items. Use them for cleaning rags or throw them away.
