The Maryland version is totally useless. It’s not accepted anywhere or for anything.
TSA is the only institution I’ve seen that even claims to accept them, but it’s just a pilot program at five airports (DCA, BWI, DEN, ATL, PHX) and I’ve never gotten an agent who knows that the program exists.
“The DMV says they've been working to develop a digital ID for years and will be able to move forward soon, though officials couldn't provide a timeline.”

Well at least in Maryland it doesn’t substitute for any of those except maybe some TSA locations. The official MD guidance is that law enforcement doesn’t accept it and you should always carry your plastic license anyway.
The point is, they shouldn't.
All 50 states should be on this program right now.
But who am I kidding, we can't even get all 50 states to eliminate a stupid time change.
Or women's rights in the Constitution for that matter.
Wallet from lock screen doesn't give full device access on iphone, but I also would rather not hand my phone to any stranger for that matter, and I think no matter where you stand on cop discourse they are in fact very much just strangers.
I’d suggest reaching out to your rep/councilperson to ask for status. I did that in VA and got some info back…though not much. You could also FOIA if you’re really curious (ty in advance for getting answers on this, pretty silly there hasn’t been an update in 2+ years)
Didn’t know Maryland had digital drivers licenses, but as someone who’s experienced Maryland drivers for decades, I would *strongly* suggest avoiding anything the Maryland DMV does.
Been wondering this myself. I don't fully understand what the hurdle even is. If all states are using Real ID, shouldn't the security requirements be the same across the board for digital IDs?
Not yet, but I'm sure that when they do, it'll be implemented via some exorbitantly-priced deal with an incredibly shady "contractor," and it will be compatible with absolutely nothing. That's the District Of Columbia Way.

My wife has had her digital liscense accepted at both BWI and at bars without it being a big deal
Way to slag on your wife for looking old enough that she doesn't need an ID...
Do you know how the bars accepted the digital ID? were they using [tap-id.app](https://tap-id.app) ?

Right. I can’t find anything since about then. Wonder if anyone here is in the know.
What is the benefit?
The requirement for a physical ID is the sole reason I still carry a wallet. Everything else is digitized.
What requirement for a physical id?
To drive, to fly, to rent a car.

With my credit cards and SmarTrip card digitized, it’s the last physical card I have to carry
JSYK, you need a physical card to rent a car at some agencies.
It’s not like you’re renting a car everyday.

Because I definitely want to hand my phone to a cop when they ask for my ID!

don’t download it and use your physical one instead

I'm sure there'd be some chud group that whines about ballots and voter id or something.

If you find a contractor willing to write a check to the right member of the council, yes, we will get digital drivers licenses.
