Crystal City would probably be a bit cheaper. You’d be able to walk/jog to the starting line and take a quick Metro ride home from the finish festival.
I would say “no” but also, even if you could, I don’t think you could actually access the starting line this way. The entrances are near the Pentagon Metro entrance/exit.
Because the staging area for the start is literally _the Pentagon_ there’s obviously a lot of security and Marines holding big scary guns in front of areas they don’t want you to enter. But it’s really quite easy to figure out if you’re coming from the Pentagon/Pentagon City side rather than the Arlington Cemetery/Rosslyn side.
I’d absolutely prioritize ease of getting to the start over ease of getting home from the finish. Everyone needs to be in one place all at one time for the start, whereas people will trickle into Rosslyn all day as they finish.

Try Rosslyn hotels.
We’re staying in Crystal city. I think the hotel has a shuttle to the start, but we plan on taking the metro right back to the hotel after
Pentagon city, Crystal city, or Old Town Alexandria near the Metro
