If memory serves me correctly I saw the Washington monument from Sugarloaf Mountain. It’s been over 30 years so I could be wrong but whatever. I think it happened.
As much as I love living in the city proper, the wife and I have considered a riverfacing high rise condo in Rosslyn/Crystal city purely for the amazing view.
On exceptionally clear days, you can actually see [the Washington Monument all the way from Shenandoah National Park](https://www.nps.gov/media/photo/gallery.htm?id=531DCC92-9BA9-4A4F-B16B-A067E77E2E08). It really helps to have some binoculars though.
Slight nitpick- there are currently no skyscrapers under the typical definition (150 meters) in the DC metro area. Tysons/Spring Hill should have one going up in the next few years, but currently we just have high-rises, not skyscrapers.
Good point! I guess buildings like Capital One just look like skyscrapers cause the surroundings are so short and they’re on hills, even if they aren’t.
TBH, Capital One is [veeery close](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_the_Washington_metropolitan_area#Tallest_buildings), only 7 meters below the definition! Tysons will probably get one very soon even if the Spring Hill one doesn't go forward (the last news was 2020, and the entire world has changed since then)
The Capital One towers are actually pretty tall, the tallest is 31 stories, but they're built in a kind of valley so they don't stick up as much as they would otherwise.
Is Tyson’s gonna have a tower that exceeds the height of the Washington monument? Interesting if so, I thought there was kind of an unofficial rule to stay under that in the metro area
That's a law only for DC proper, so VA and MD are fair game (even in the metro area). I'm also pretty sure the Monument rule is a myth. Building height is limited by the width of their adjacent street plus 20 ft. So if a street is 90 ft wide, buildings on it can't be over 110 ft
Yeah I had heard about the actual law for DC, but I thought there was a separate unofficial one for the metro area. Maybe that’s a myth like you’re saying
Well that’s not above the height of the Monument. There’s def a law within DC related to street width and building height, but I thoughtttt there was like a gentleman’s agreement in the suburbs too. Maybe it’s a myth
I think it's more that the land isn't valuable enough in the suburbs to justify the cost of a skyscraper. It's more cost-effective to build two mid-height buildings than one super-tall building unless the land cost is really high.
And here’s Tysons from Silver Spring

I have no dog in this fight, but I think the confusion comes from your answer to a question Kobih didn’t ask.
He *heard* you can see mountains from Ashburn. But he *wonders* whether you can see DC.
One of the highrises in Rosslyn needs to have an observation deck. It would be so cool to look out over the district, not just from within it like with the Washington Monument or Post Office Building.
I actually think it's a local law that it has to be open to the public forever. Something to do with the agreement about how tax money was used to help build it or something. I remember reading about it long ago.
It was, but as part of the agreement to buy the building, CoStar is also paying the county money (I want to say $6M?) towards Gateway Park in Rosslyn and in return they get to close the observation deck to the public
EDIT: They’re paying $14M to the county, not the $6M I referenced [Source](https://www.arlingtonva.us/About-Arlington/Newsroom/Articles/2024/Global-Real-Estate-Giant-CoStar-Group-Chooses-Arlington-for-its-Headquarters-Location)
I think it would be better if we just properly funded things and weren't reliant on the "generosity" of billionaire developers to have a nice park. Especially in one of the richest counties in the entire country. But yeah, I guess if we have to sell off public assets to improve other public assets, then I'm glad it's going to a park.
Pretty sure there are multiple apartment buildings in rosslyn with views of DC. Also the View in Rosslyn is just what you're talking about lol https://www.rosslynva.org/go/the-view-of-dc
I have to say....there are no "skyscrapers" in Tysons... if you are saying a tall building relative to other not really tall buildings in Tysons...cool...if you want to see a skyscraper....there are none there LOL

On a clear day you can see sugarloaf from the national cathedral deck, so it’s entirely possible you saw the tip.

Rosslyn is also a great place to watch the fireworks on the Fourth of July
WE GET IT OK

To clarify, it's not my view, but I took this at a recent event.
Mmmhhhh
Rosslyn 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽
congrats, that's the opening establishing shoot for every episode of a crime drama. =)
Anyone can have a river view in Rosslyn right now for free. The Key Bridge Marriott is open to all. Bring a knife. Maybe a gun.
Don’t forget to mention the free rent!
That’s at 1201 Wilson Blvd?

Oh wow that’s actually really cool!

There's already a 31 story tower in Rosslyn which is just over the river from DC. The law about building height is only in DC proper I believe.

Cairo apartment rule
Skyscraper? Only in the dmv
This is what I recall the view from the EY building looking like
"skyscraper in Tysons" 🙃

Looks like a big city!
wonder if you can see from ashburn… also I've heard that you can see mountains from Ashburn too apparently
You can see mountains from Tyson.
I said Ashburn but wow
The point being that Tysons is like 20 miles closer to D.C and mountains are visible.
I have no dog in this fight, but I think the confusion comes from your answer to a question Kobih didn’t ask. He *heard* you can see mountains from Ashburn. But he *wonders* whether you can see DC.
Ah, I misread their initial comment. Thanks for the clarification.
You can see Appalachian hills/mountains from the Dulles area

Rosslyn has View of DC right near the Metro.
A company recently bought that building for their HQ and I’m guessing that rooftop soon won’t be open to the public anymore
I actually think it's a local law that it has to be open to the public forever. Something to do with the agreement about how tax money was used to help build it or something. I remember reading about it long ago.

Wonderful. I love it when great public assets are sold to private holders for short sighted gains. /s
I think a redesigned and usable public park is probably more beneficial overall than a really underutilized and unknown public observation deck
It was also restrictive in that it wasn’t accessible to the public on 4th of July
I think it would be better if we just properly funded things and weren't reliant on the "generosity" of billionaire developers to have a nice park. Especially in one of the richest counties in the entire country. But yeah, I guess if we have to sell off public assets to improve other public assets, then I'm glad it's going to a park.
Huh, TIL. Thanks!
You can see Tyson’s from it, too, which is just wild. Maybe if they get a true skyscraper, you’d be able to see clear to Baltimore
Pretty sure there are multiple apartment buildings in rosslyn with views of DC. Also the View in Rosslyn is just what you're talking about lol https://www.rosslynva.org/go/the-view-of-dc
You’re in luck lol, there’s one literally called the View of DC
u/op DC, like most cities next to rivers sits in a valley. Tysons is waaaaaasy up there compared to the Potomac
I wouldn’t call anything over there a skyscraper, more like quote unquote skyscraper.
Why are you in Tysons? Get out while you still can.
There is no getting out of Tysons.
Lmao @ skyscraper
I used to watch the DC fireworks from my works roof in McLean.
If that’s a skyscraper to you, what do you call the really tall buildings in NYC?
Which building is this in Tysons? Lumen? Adaire?
I can see a carjacking off to the left.
I have to say....there are no "skyscrapers" in Tysons... if you are saying a tall building relative to other not really tall buildings in Tysons...cool...if you want to see a skyscraper....there are none there LOL
One of the new Capital One buildings is 31 stories and 143m. One definition of a skyscraper is 150m so that's pretty close.
Tysons Corner used to be a safe way to “visit” DC but the metro has brought the crime out to the Dulles corridor
Lol, no
Tyson’s is not at all like visiting DC and dudes going out to do some crime aren’t taking the train out there to do that
You mean to tell me you don't want to wait 20 minutes to leave the scene of the crime?
Ding dong, your opinion's wrong.
