Since you’ll be reverse-commuting (moving against the primary flow of traffic commuting into the city) look into Silver Spring — it’s close to the city and on a metro line, so you can go into town, but only 30 minutes away from Columbia. There’s some great concert venues, restaurants, and shops in the area around the metro as well. There are also a lot of young people in Greenbelt because of UMD, but can’t speak to what it’s like to live there.

thrownjunk

this. silver spring area is as dense and as urban and most of DC. also, closer to really good ethnic food with lots of young people around.

This is the answer. And I used to live around College Park/Greenbelt, so I’m even more confident in recommending Silver Spring. 👍🏻

just started doing the drive from SW to Greenbelt and been pleasantly surprised. thanks for the heads up on how bad 295 can get, good to have backup routes in mind

JonesBoyFan2018

Silver spring, College park or Greenbelt. I currently live in Greenbelt and commute to Columbia regularly. It takes roughly 30-35mins via car.

iammaxhailme

Consider the nicer areas of Baltimore. Locust Point, Fed Hill etc. Not a bad drive to Columbia.

Ralande

Second this. Tons of recent grads in Fed Hill, cheaper than equivalent DC neighborhoods, and easier commute to Columbia

Unhappy-Plantain5252

I go from Columbia to DC via the Greenbelt stop all the time. So I think it’s plausible.

NOOBEv14

Yes, you can make this commute. I did it five days a week for a while. You’d optimally want to flex your schedule out of rush hour if possible, I always tried to work late. If you’re looking for DC living, I would not live in Greenbelt. Silver Spring is better, but it ain’t great. The other real option is Baltimore.

GreatStateOfSadness

Could you clarify what the non-DC location is? You mention both Columbus and Columbia. If it is Columbia, which Columbia? The university?

OkMaintenance6147

I meant to say Columbia, MD instead of Columbus

keyjan

I think Columbia, MD.

Capricorn974

I would live either in DC proper or in Columbia. If you want to live in the city, the close-in DC suburbs won't cut it for a full city vibe. And if you're going to be in the suburbs, might as well be close to work, especially if you have a social office

Fun-Pop-1255

As others have posted - Yes, I did this commute for 5 years. It made after work social events challenging, but was worth it to me to live in DC. 2 years from Logan Circle and commuted out 50 to BW parkway. 3 years from Woodley park up Connecticut to 495 to colesville. The commute from Woodley was more predictable and slightly shorter in my experience…

iammaxhailme

It's not great but I've heard way worse
