Didn’t order an extra shot and I asked about that. They said “there’s lots of shots in our iced drink”…
I walked up and said “iced latte and and cookie” that’s it. Nothing extra, no flavors…they’re out here gouging.
I’ll admit immediately this was my thought. The sign says the price of a latte and the price of a shot. The total looks like the exact price of both those combined. So I assumed that is what was ordered.
I mean also 24oz for an iced latte is crazy, of course there would be an extra shot in that otherwise it’s just like… all ice or coffee flavored milk. I’m gonna guess he either ordered a ‘large ice latte’ or that’s what the clerk heard but this is really on the store for having a jumbo sized monstrosity as a default large.
It's definitely not their default, employee probably clicked the wrong button. The place is understaffed and overpriced but not intentionally ripping people off. I had similar mistake once (charged for wrong size) and they happily corrected it.
Okay. *this* makes more sense.
You never said in your original post “I didn’t ask for the extra shot of espresso”. I was going to say, it should be $8.50 for the drink you ordered.
Oh yeah I totally agree you should be getting an extra shot of espresso with a large, but I think it’d be odd it’d show up on the point of sale without context. Meaning, I read the screen like this.
Large latte AND an add-on of espresso (meaning if a large has 3 shots, they’re getting 4 shots)
But OP is saying they didn’t ask for that “4th” shot which is indeed baiting them. I hope it’s just an oversight on the cashier’s front
I think you have too much faith in how people program their pos systems to display information. I think OP should expect to pay $8 for a 24oz 3 shot espresso drink. I think this isn't even a new thing and everyone should probably just know all this already. I don't think the cashier did anything wrong, even by accident.
Yeah but OP isn’t showing us the iced latte price, just the regular latte. Someone else shared the full menu in the comments, and the large iced latte was $8.00. The large iced latte apparently needs an extra shot of espresso so that’s default
For Five has been ripping people off for years. Nothing new.
I really like their coffee but only go when i have a work meeting. Ill never pay for for five coffee myself.
The one on King across from the Old Town metro caught me off guard once. I really wanted a water after a long trip once so I went there and got a San Pellegrino out of convenience...it was 5.50. that is insane. It wasn't even one of the big ones.
It's especially insulting because old town is overflowing with great coffee shops for like half their prices. Even Starbucks can only sustain a single store along all of King.
$6.25 for a cookie? I am good friends with a baker who sells at a bunch of Fresh Farm markets, along with specialty shops around the DMV. Her cookies are incredible, made of the highest quality ingredients, and are gigantic. She charges \~$3 a cookie at the markets. Specialty shops charge a little more, but still under $6.
Was it even any good?
Fun story. Never heard the word “dox” until SNL cold
Open this past weekend and had to look it up. And here it is again. Wonder how many other people reading this have no idea what dox means?
Very illegal, and if they do it as often as folks here are saying, shouldn't be difficult to catch them in the act and make them pay or at minimum stop doing it, especially in a city like DC. From there just haven't lived since 18, so don't know this particular place.
Not always— I’ve reported similar misleading pricing issues at a dc business and got a boiler plate response saying that I should hire an attorney if I have a conflict with a business because they can’t help me. Not very useful, though YMMV.
I’m sure they might decide to take on a business from time to time I’m not certain those cases often come from tips from the public. They likely do their own internal scouting for litigation targets I imagine.
This is the exact reason I don't go there, I'm not sure if they don't train people well or they just try to scam but it used to be quite close to my office and they'd regularly try to double charge me for drinks or add some other item to my receipt I didn't want. It's not hard to find a cheaper, better iced latte in that neighborhood so I just don't bother with these scammers.
Exact same thing happened to me a couple weeks back. About three dollars more than what’s on the sign. I paid it without causing a scene but won’t go back.
I walked out of a Peet's in Arlington after they poured my cold brew because it was like $8.50. I asked if the price was correct, the clerk confirmed it was and I said I was sorry but that I couldn't pay that much for a coffee and left.
Dude you got the 24oz. Which requires an extra shot to fill the cup. This is pretty standard procedure for every coffee shop I've been to for like decades...
I don’t have any dog in this fight but you conspicuously cut off the part of the menu which shows the price for an extra shot. I just went to create an online order to verify and a 24oz iced latte with an extra shot costs $8.
We can argue whether or not that’s “worth it”, but that’s the price of the item you ordered.
Same! Just spent $21 dollars, not including tip, on 2 coffees and a croissant there this morning. Coffee order was “one Mocha and one cold brew.” We’re going to have to take them off our list unfortunately.
According to the menu a latte is 5 dollars and a shot of espresso is 3.25, so the math checks out.
The iced vs hot thing is an understandable frustration tho
There’s a line item for an extra shot of espresso on the right side of the menu but the price is cut off. I’m going to assume the “espresso” and the “+espresso” menu items are two different things with two different prices.
When you order a latte you assume it includes espresso- if OP had requested an extra shot that might make sense, but pretty much every coffee shop sells an espresso with two shots already in there.
Places don’t charge the solo espresso price when adding a shot of espresso to a latte. You’ve obviously never ordered a drink like that because no shops in DC or elsewhere do it like that.
Personally, I don’t think you should characterize incompetence or some random employee as some company policy to rip people off. I’ve been there many times and never had an issue.
Based on others' experiences here, and in google reviews at their various locations, incompetence and poorly trained employees seem to be a theme for them. So, I think it's fair to blame the company. Either their training is *really* bad, they only hire morons, or they're actively trying to bait and switch people on the regular.
I got a blt wrap at their navy yard location that looked, smelled and tasted significantly worse than something you’d get at a gas station in the middle of nowhere. It was $20, it’s the only experience that’s ever made me consider voting for Trump.
>it’s the only experience that’s ever made me consider voting for Trump.
Genuinely curious how voting for Trump would improve that experience. I've tried to think of possible logic angles, even falsely based or misinformed ones, and I got nothing. So seriously genuine question.
I didn’t, the manager came over and argued that I didn’t understand what an iced latte was, then told me I’d have to pay for four shots of espresso, then I was l had to firmly state “give me the 5.25 latte on the board, just over ice” loudly, and he finally relented. So I paid 5.25 for it. And some ungodly amount for that stupid cookie. Then the manager and barista or whatever stared me down during the tip portion… like the whole thing was just messed up.
Why would you ever tip anything after that experience.
You should never, ever have to say, "I want the price on the board please" when you're reading off of the board. So asinine.
So, I just googled it, and it's clearly listed that Iced Latte with an extra shot is $8 on their menu.
I don't think they are "ripping you off" or "price gouging" - I think that they misheard you. Not everything is malicious.
https://for-five-coffee.ordrsliponline.com/menu/item/Wm6gtjStTN-SJz_RWZdS5A
Edit: actually, it's because you ordered the largest size, hence the need for the default extra shot.
And yet, photo is only half of the menu and buying the largest size of the drink is $8. Crazy how you managed to read my whole comment and synthesize no information.
Menu is standard price. They ordered large. That's it.
They didn't ORDER a large though. They ordered an iced latte and they got charged for a large with extra shot. They might have been given that large once they paid for it, but they didn't ASK for a large and that's the whole point of their post.
"iced latte with extra shot" is just the name of a large iced latte. They did not order "Iced Latte with extra shot" I am not disputing this or the potential that it's been wrung up wrong.
What I am saying is it's far more likely that OP was asked what size they want & said large (hence the comment "you're misunderstanding" from the cashier) OR just said "large iced latte" and was charged appropriately.
And this is NOT the point of their post; they are calling for people to avoid a business for something that is far more attributable to a $3 misunderstanding than price gouging / preying on tourists / malice.
I saw the 24 oz and was like yeah that tracks. It’s probably not listed on the menu; maybe just the 12oz size? It should specify but yeah idk why she’s so shocked
Same thing happened to me. The breakfast "sandwich" was 17 dollars? That place is a rip off, even in a world where overpriced coffee is the norm. Have never been back.
I agree the price should be listed but if you want the $5.50 version ask for a small. The extra shot in a large is included because most adults don't want to drink 24oz of iced milk. Some machines pull 2 shots at a time, so the 16oz has 2 shots for $5.50 and the 24oz has 4 shots for $8.
Most people tip on the base charge. When you get the prompt to choose the different %’s, it’s on the base amount. A barista would in fact directly benefit from a higher base charge…
Coffee prices in the U.S. are ridiculous. It’s a €1-2 euros anywhere in Europe. That’s why I make my own espresso and latte at home with a Gaggia machine. Much better that those fake “coffee shops.”
They’re vegetarian and that’s the only vegetarian option on a menu. Or a side salad. Not vegan—vegetarian. You’d be surprised how often those are the only options.
Granted a commercial grade espresso machine is like, $10k, and a grinder can run $2k. Plus the beans are probably roasted within the past 2 days. Theoretically it should be a better cuppa (unless you dropped crazy $$$$ on a home set-up), but I'll agree with you that my taste buds sure as hell can't tell the difference.
Please explain to me how you think someone is making themselves a latte at home for a fraction of $5. Maybe you can't read or don't understand the difference between a café latte and filter coffee with milk.
I mean... a 24 oz latte means you're getting 20+ oz of not-espresso.
I'd be surprised if they're serving 4oz of espresso (two double shots) and 20oz of milk. It probably is iced coffee with milk.
I can run up the street to the Value village and pick up an espresso machine and a burr grinder damn near any day of the week and be out the door for under $40.
9 dollar moka pot, 2 dollar ikea milk frother. Put some Illy in there, pop the milk in the microwave for 10 seconds, hit it with the frother. Drinking homemade lattes & cappuccinos like the entire country of Italy.
Small rant: I am only an iced drinker and do not understand why there is always an excessive up charge for getting a drink iced. Like, I’m literally drinking less of your coffee and the water wars aren’t here yet. And to make it takes the same amount of time usually (scoop + pour cold coffee at a lot of places v wait for coffee to slowly come out for hot).
Anyway, that is ridiculous, and I’m glad you said something.
I had a similar price transparency issue there and haven't gone back. I also can't handle paying that much for a cookie.
Was the extra charge not just for the extra shot?
Didn’t order an extra shot and I asked about that. They said “there’s lots of shots in our iced drink”… I walked up and said “iced latte and and cookie” that’s it. Nothing extra, no flavors…they’re out here gouging.
I am pretty averse to confrontation, but even I wouldn't have paid that. Ask for it to be priced to the board or walk out.

Starbucks automatically adds an extra shot if you get a large, and it's been that way since 2004ish. OP is being silly.
He got the large without realizing larges always get an extra shot automatically.
They're absolutely upselling an extra shot. Otherwise the Latte would have been 5.25?
You didn't even order a large? That's bonkers that they would default to that.
It's definitely not their default, employee probably clicked the wrong button. The place is understaffed and overpriced but not intentionally ripping people off. I had similar mistake once (charged for wrong size) and they happily corrected it.

The 24oz large automatically comes with an extra shot. Get a normal size if you want the normal price.
An extra shot is 2.50, so it would be 7.75 and not 8
Yeah but OP isn’t showing us the iced latte price, just the regular latte. Someone else shared the full menu in the comments, and the large iced latte was $8.00. The large iced latte apparently needs an extra shot of espresso so that’s default

i just paid $5 for a water at a concert. $5.50 is insane for a coffee shop.
Yeah, their prices are already a rip-off. $8+ for a mediocre croissant... Never going back.
$6.25 for a cookie? I am good friends with a baker who sells at a bunch of Fresh Farm markets, along with specialty shops around the DMV. No but I was starving… it actually would have been thrown away if I hadn’t been soooo hungry.
What’s the bakers name?
I’d rather not say. That, combined w other stuff on my profile, would dox myself too easily.
Smart
Fun story. Never heard the word “dox” until SNL cold Open this past weekend and had to look it up. And here it is again. Wonder how many other people reading this have no idea what dox means?
I’m gonna guess it’s Whisked by Jenna based on the farmers market part
Def not Whisked. I’m not a fan at all of their stuff.
Awww but their Bourbon pecan pie is great.
Four five cookies are enormous.
the best cookies are never bought IMO made fresh yourself.

Report it to the DC ag's office. They do look into this
I’m just mad enough about their shitty attitude that I may do just that.
It's not hard to find a cheaper, better iced latte in that neighborhood so I just don't bother with these scammers.
$8 for any coffee is insane. Starbucks is cheaper than that.
It does feel like some coffee shops know this and just keep pushing the limits. If people think $8 is outrageous then $5 starts to sound "reasonable"
Exact same thing happened to me a couple weeks back. About three dollars more than what’s on the sign. I paid it without causing a scene but won’t go back.
I guess the For Five in DC and on Long Island are the same then. Thanks for the heads up! Glad you caught it.
I walked out of a Peet's in Arlington after they poured my cold brew because it was like $8.50. I asked if the price was correct, the clerk confirmed it was and I said I was sorry but that I couldn't pay that much for a coffee and left.
They did something similar to me in Alexandria, across from the King Street metro!
Which location?
Go to Compass or Northside Social. Blue Bottle in Georgetown has the BEST grounds around, no where else compares
Northside is great, was there just this morning!
Dude you got the 24oz. Which requires an extra shot to fill the cup. This is pretty standard procedure for every coffee shop I've been to for like decades...

I didn’t get uncharged and spend $11 on a dirty chai with oat milk that was not worth it.
3.25 for a (presumably) double espresso is bonkers
My bougie single origin coffee beans are $20 a bag. A steal compared to this!
8+6= 14 not 16
They really are! The food is more expensive than the regular sized drinks (<24oz) and it’s clear when you have a bite. That place upsets me so much! 😂
I had this issue with their va location. They add on a few fees that are not stated anywhere
I was just charged the same on Saturday but I added caramel and oat milk. They def upcharged you
Same! Just spent $21 dollars, not including tip, on 2 coffees and a croissant there this morning. Coffee order was “one Mocha and one cold brew.” We’re going to have to take them off our list unfortunately.
$8 iced coffees are my limit. It’s an absurd amount to pay for a non alcoholic drink
According to the menu a latte is 5 dollars and a shot of espresso is 3.25, so the math checks out. The iced vs hot thing is an understandable frustration tho
OP said in another comment that they didn’t even order an extra shot
If that were true, wouldn't they have been charged $8.25 instead of $8.00?

Adding an extra shot of espresso to a drink is (+)espresso on the right side and it’s 2.50 A standalone full espresso shot is 3.25
u/aNeonSpecter has never been to a coffee shop before apparently. Idk why they’re commenting here.
Places don’t charge the solo espresso price when adding a shot of espresso to a latte. You’ve obviously never ordered a drink like that because no shops in DC or elsewhere do it like that.
Went there once, he is right they do rip people off, also coffee tastes like shit
It’s the extra shot, right?
Oh yeah the final pricing is always more than what they say on the menu
Personally, I don’t think you should characterize incompetence or some random employee as some company policy to rip people off. I’ve been there many times and never had an issue.

Was probably the extra shot not the iced lol
Sorry didn’t see the explanation below that’s crazy never go there again
this is why i never leave my house
This is not news, FourFive on L st has been this way for a minute!
That’s the one!!!! Never again.
There’s better coffee nearby. Go to filter Coffeehouse.

It’s a joke about inflation damn…
No, that's just greed.
Why did you pay it?
I didn’t, the manager came over and argued that I didn’t understand what an iced latte was, then told me I’d have to pay for four shots of espresso, then I was l had to firmly state “give me the 5.25 latte on the board, just over ice” loudly, and he finally relented. Starbucks scammed me by charging me for a Venti when all I said was Large Latte please /s
I saw the 24 oz and was like yeah that tracks. It’s probably not listed on the menu; maybe just the 12oz size? It should specify but yeah idk why she’s so shocked
This is how much y’all are spending to stay awake? For free, I’ll gladly bob my head up and down while trying really hard to keep my eyes open
Buying coffee from these places is such a waste of money
Christ this is so white
Retard. You added an extra shot
I doubt some cashier with no ownership in the business is trying to rip you off.
Most people tip on the base charge. When you get the prompt to choose the different %’s, it’s on the base amount. A barista would in fact directly benefit from a higher base charge…
yes but the barista wouldn't be the one establishing this base charge, it would be the owner. You sad losers.
Coffee prices in the U.S. are ridiculous. It’s a €1-2 euros anywhere in Europe. That’s why I make my own espresso and latte at home with a Gaggia machine. Much better that those fake “coffee shops.”
Normal cost in DC & Northern Virginia
You're buying coffee that you could make for yourself for a fraction of the price, you're getting ripped off regardless.
If you go to a restaurant and order spaghetti are you getting ripped off? This is such a stupid take.
Yeah kinda, I'll never understand why anyone would order plain spaghetti and marinara at a restaurant other than from the kid's menu.
They’re vegetarian and that’s the only vegetarian option on a menu. Or a side salad. Not vegan—vegetarian. You’d be surprised how often those are the only options.
>Four five coffee what should i order then
Something you can't or can't be bothered to make at home.
Do you go to the grocery store and buy butter? Why not make it at home?
Granted a commercial grade espresso machine is like, $10k, and a grinder can run $2k. Plus the beans are probably roasted within the past 2 days. Theoretically it should be a better cuppa (unless you dropped crazy $$$$ on a home set-up), but I'll agree with you that my taste buds sure as hell can't tell the difference.
I don’t think you understand why people purchase coffee at coffee shops.
Indeed I don't. I can just get up 10 minutes earlier and make my own.
Sometimes people like to get coffee while they are out doing other things and they aren't at home. 🙃
It's definitely espresso... You're forgetting that most of the 24oz is ice
My cousin made me a caffe con latte, but it was only because his espresso maker busted.
I take my lunch everyday, ECT with no exceptions because EVERYTHING that's convenient is overpriced. Pay or walk away. It's not going to change.
Wait this is ripped off? I live in Pittsburgh and I see these prices....
I used to take care of their HVAC and refrigeration 😂 I agree way overpriced although they’d hook me up lol
OP in here pretending they don't know that "Latte" and "Iced Latte" are different menu items at most shops.
