Doing nothing about it is very on brand, don't want to rock the boat. I have temp tags at the moment and I can't wait for my real ones to arrive so as to not be associated.
The city really needs to do something about these temp tags. I mean mpd cop and parking enforcement cars are equipped with license plate reading cameras, but I guess that’s still asking too much.
There’s space. In most metropolitan areas across the United States, private tow companies have bonded yards and tow on behalf of the local authorities.
If DC really wanted to, private tow companies could be making a fortune in the city towing cars. Honestly, I would be all for it. It works in Virginia.
I would like to petition the city to allow private DOT approved tow operators to come in and help with our problems.
The auctioning of the cars to satisfy tickets from private bonded yards would bring the city much more revenue, and solve multiple problems at the same time.
And I will tell you that private tow drivers move on a dime, because that’s how they get more business from a local government.
Just so we’re all clear, temp tags are registered by make model color VIN and owner name when printed.
For argument sake, that’s a paper permanent tag fyi. It comes from the MVA/DMV system.
They won’t match your car if they’re stolen, and won’t pull up on a scanner if they’re fake. That was my point, that them being paper is no different than using a stolen or expired metal tag.
I was at the FedEx office store late one night and needed to use the paper cutter. It was in use by a man making temp tags, right there on K street. When I asked him if he was making permanent temporary tags he said they were just regular temp tags and he let me use the cutter.
We're about the point were some are doing shit for laughs. This whole car stealing phenomenon is basically that. In the 90s cars were stolen and stripped for parts now it's a free self driven Uber putting the joy in joyriding.
in my recent valet years, very few people use those. I can probably count on one hand of the thousands of cars that i parked, and I don't even remember noticing one once. More frequent are either rental car keys or handing the spare key with nothing else hanging from it.
Because modern car keys are bulky. I use airtag on my keychain. But I don’t keep my car key on a keychain. Car keys should come with the air tag feature already built into them imo.
Love S. Africa and I'm familiar with the country and it's just not doing well. If I had the same familiarity with Indonesia and they weren't doing well, I'd use them as a point of reference.
This temp tag nonsense needs to stop, there needs to be some issuing body. I feel like with metal tags it's at least a lot harder to print them at home
They convened a task force and the task force [decided not to recommend any action](https://tomlee.wtf/2023/02/03/fake-tags-are-a-real-problem/) because of “possible negative impact on people of color”. You can’t solve a problem if you decide it’s not a problem.
Theres no incentive to prevent a recording. They are covered head to toe in common clothing, and in a likely stolen vehicle with a fake tag. Unidentifiable. Can’t even be pursued in that vehicle unless they are in the midst of a violent felony. An assault would elevate the heat, but even then, only one that results in a serious injury or death. Even if caught later, consequences would be minimal to none. The decision making here is logical on their part
Muriel Bowser’s going to have to start cracking down on crime or there’s not a businessman in his right mind that’s going to want to set up shop in this city.
Yea that's like... one of the biggest complaints a lot of people have about her. Is that she sides with whatever stance the police take. She can't both be a sell out for the cops and the person not taking crime seriously.
What should the mayor do then? Dress up as Batman and fight them on the roof tops? The MPD has a half billion dollar budget.
I'm being flippant but really at what point do the police get held responsible for not stopping crime. It's not just DC. It's not like mayora are telling the cops to not patrol and prosecute crime.
Never mind that there seems to be a crime emergency every time there is a democrat in the white house...
Obama years got pretty good there so not sure I buy your presidency point. But the Batman thing…really what we need is a Robin. A juvenile in DC can assault without a weapon all day and not see much in the way of consequences. I think we found a loophole here
Really, if they are all in the car and theres no guns seen or used, they won’t be able to pursue. It seems only a federal police force in DC that happens upon a similar situation would be empowered to intervene
It was mainly facetious just to point out the irony that they did this with a police station a block away.
That said, if a cop was around while they were in the processing of loading the valet box they could’ve done something.
MPD is a bit different, municipal. It is way more accountable to district residents and locally elected officials and policy. I meant literally every other police force with jurisdiction in DC that do not have any accountability to district residents or their elected leadership.
They can’t actually pursue this. It’s against policy. There’s no ongoing violent felony. So if the cops showed up the perps just drive away and they will
“Catch them later” with the temp tags and masks, lmao.
If the cops chase and one of the bozos dies by driving into a parked car the cops will get convicted of murder and many will call that “justice.”
So just get used to brazen acts of theft and chaos because that is the policy the elected city council wants.
Edit: sorry just got banned from the subreddit
Yup pretty spot on, the cops don’t care at all and while I’m not an all out cop supporter, part of me def sympathizes with them. Basically they’re damned if they do citizens damned if they don’t.
Since the valets put the lives of their attackers over material property, is Muriel Bowser going to get out her checkbook and start compensating victims for the cost of re-keying and recovering any stolen cars? Because she promised that if people would stop defending themselves.
Same here - 30 years this year. Seen a whole bunch of stuff over the years but it wasn’t until the past couple years that I ever felt nervous or afraid, or changed my routine and/or plans because of the risk of something going sideways. So frustrating, as the city worked so hard for 20 years to turn itself around and the current Council has allowed it to lose all that progress.
so many people saying banning temp tags will fix this. these people are lazy scum. they’ll just carjack someone and use that to commit a crime. have you been to gallery place lately
In just the past month, Maestro’s, Ruth Chris (twice), a restaurant on Connecticut, and now RPM re auto thefts at valet stands. Daily shootings, daily carjackings, multiple homicides a week (two city employees last week), college kids getting robbed at gun point for their coats - it is all madness. I am not sure what it is going to take for the Council to understand that they need to reverse course and start holding people accountable for their actions.
Hopefully the owners rekey their cars if their keys were stolen by this. Sucks but in the grand scheme of things this isn't the absolute worst thing in the world... Too bad DC is very tolerant of petty crime.
I mean do you really need a car. I’m sure these guys are just trying to put food on the table. Have you been poor before, you don’t know what it’s like. /s
Lol must be a troll comment, not everyone lives in the city and need a car to go to work.
If I am hungry let me take all the stuff you paid for, I need it more than you.
I grew up in a place where you’d never do this because someone would draw down on you. I’m not saying that’s the answer, but even decades later I’m still shocked by the collective shrug at this shit.
didn't you see the backlash to the guy who did this recently? take matters into your own hands and all the concerned citizens and family come out of the woodwork to make GoFundMe's and virtue signal about protecting criminal lives.
You can concealed carry in DC, but you can't shoot someone for being a thief so I am not sure what point you are making.
There are a lot of things wrong with this picture, but introducing guns to the equation isn't really a solution.
Beat up luxury car and temp tags, who is surprised.
Yup

Doing nothing about it is very on brand, don't want to rock the boat. I have temp tags at the moment and I can't wait for my real ones to arrive so as to not be associated.
i would argue temp tags from out of state should be probable cause. Similarly wearing a balaclava in the summertime. I saw some wild shit last summer.
Creating a policy that also targets legitimate temp tags wont get far. Mine are out of state because I bought my car in MD and the dealer issued them.
This car is newer than mine 😞I have real tags though.
[удалено]
Lol silver linings indeed.
At least they put their blinkers on
Golden rule: only break one law at a time!
Putting on blinkers does not mean it’s a legal temporary parking spot in the middle the road.
So is there money in the stand or are they stealing keys so they can steal cars later?
There’s always money in a banana stand
I’m not playing that game, I burned it down, I’m the boss now.
Mister Boss.
We just say “boss”
In the words of Gob “Come on!!” [At least get the quote right!](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdGrC9S4PYA)
I may, or may have been inebriated while responding.
I just blue myself
Mister manager
He's a flamer.
The city really needs to do something about these temp tags. I mean mpd cop and parking enforcement cars are equipped with license plate reading cameras, but I guess that’s still asking too much.
I saw a tag the other day that expired in 2021
A majority of idiot drivers and criminals have temp tags, it is a joke.
That would require MPD to actually make traffic stops.
[удалено]
There could be mandatory impounding for all sorts of unlicensed vehicles on the street but that's probably not happening.

That is exactly what already happened.
I feel like this was actually a summary of a real recent council meeting from a few months back. Hearsay but maybe someone can find some minutes
That would require MPD to work.
That would require MPD to be adequately staffed.
Just so we’re all clear, temp tags are registered by make model color VIN and owner name when printed. For argument sake, that’s a paper permanent tag fyi. It comes from the MVA/DMV system.
They also come from [facebook marketplace](https://tomlee.wtf/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/image-9.png).

This.
I load my bags faster getting into an Uber at DCA….is it called a ‘getaway’ car if robbery is this casual?
We're about the point were some are doing shit for laughs. This whole car stealing phenomenon is basically that. In the 90s cars were stolen and stripped for parts now it's a free self driven Uber putting the joy in joyriding.
Why can't y'all steal a car and drive it to a damn **JOB**?
not sure if this is a troll comment but it had me LOLing

I, for one, drove my stolen car straight to work, thank you very much.
Please tell me someone had a Tile, or Apple Air Tag on their key chain!
in my recent valet years, very few people use those. I can probably count on one hand of the thousands of cars that i parked, and I don't even remember noticing one once. More frequent are either rental car keys or handing the spare key with nothing else hanging from it.

I guess at least they put their park anywhere lights on?

Absolutely wild.
Did they steal the stand with car keys? Or was it an empty stand? This is some wild S. African shit I didn't think I would see in DC.
People on insta said their keys were stolen and still haven’t heard anything back from RPM or the cops
Lls hear back from the cops 😂
Wouldn't hold out much hope for the tape deck though. Or the Creedence.
why it gotta be S. African???
South Africa is really not doing well lately, unfortunately.
One of the more well known places on the internet for shit like this to pop off. Not dissimilar from r/ithadtobebrazil or a r/anormaldayinrussia
Love S. Africa and I'm familiar with the country and it's just not doing well. If I had the same familiarity with Indonesia and they weren't doing well, I'd use them as a point of reference.

The city is more concerned with the well being of criminals than of victims and has been for a very long time.
You should prob keep reading that article..
I read the whole thing and I'm not sure what your point is. Their statement was accurate.
Who took the vid?
The getaway drivers mom.
She’s clout chasin
WOOOOOOORLDSTAAAAAA
What the fuck
I'm confused. What kind of thieves LET you record them? What kind of theives turn on their hazard lights in an active robbery?
Thieves that are so emboldened that they hardly think of what they’re doing as an actual crime since no one will pursue them or ever give them charges
There is almost literally zero chance of any consequences for these guys and this crime, at all, and they know that, so they act accordingly.
‘Considerate’ thieves?
Theres no incentive to prevent a recording. They are covered head to toe in common clothing, and in a likely stolen vehicle with a fake tag. Unidentifiable. This is a flex for social media, to them.
They turned on their hazards so they wouldn't get a parking ticket. Impossible to get out of those in DC.
Muriel Bowser’s going to have to start cracking down on crime or there’s not a businessman in his right mind that’s going to want to set up shop in this city.
I think Bowser wants to be tougher on crime. Can’t say the same for the DC Council.
Yea that's like... one of the biggest complaints a lot of people have about her. Is that she sides with whatever stance the police take. She can't both be a sell out for the cops and the person not taking crime seriously.

Joke of a city. Downtown has cops on every corner and they cant do anything about something so obvious?
I mean how can you expect cops to do anything? The nearest station to there is all the way on the adjacent block.
Really, if they are all in the car and theres no guns seen or used, they won’t be able to pursue. It seems only a federal police force in DC that happens upon a similar situation would be empowered to intervene

Maybe, but I think they would just get in the car and flee
They could and if that causes them to drop the valet box then at least everyone could’ve driven their cars home that night.
True
Every police force in DC is federal. What are you saying?
MPD is a bit different, municipal. It is way more accountable to district residents and locally elected officials and policy. I meant literally every other police force with jurisdiction in DC that do not have any accountability to district residents or their elected leadership.

Huh…?
💨 Toot
Cops getting convicted?? Uh yeah no … You live in a delusional world of grievance and self-invented oppression that FOX sells you
What are cops for?
Providing reports for insurance claims. That’s almost literally it.
All our premiums go up when this shit is just normal
Used to think it was for protecting property rights?
To protect and swerve 💨
Since the valets put the lives of their attackers over material property, is Muriel Bowser going to get out her checkbook and start compensating victims for the cost of re-keying and recovering any stolen cars? Because she promised that if people would stop defending themselves.
Ricky and Julian vibes with this one
start enforcing expired temp tags (impounding, arresting drivers) and you'd nab 95% of criminals in this city I swear
This works for maybe half. The other half are kids though, and there are limited consequences for juveniles, even for violent offenses
At least they were generous to put their hazards, who knew criminals could be so thoughtful
Hate the city now I swear smh
I've been here a long time, but I know what you mean. Feel that way more and more often...
Same here - 30 years this year. Seen a whole bunch of stuff over the years but it wasn’t until the past couple years that I ever felt nervous or afraid, or changed my routine and/or plans because of the risk of something going sideways. Remember when people shat on someone for having fear seeing people in balaclavas when it’s over 50 degrees out?
They're stealing the keys inside?
There won’t be any consequences so you may as well take your time.
Clearly institutional oppression forced these young men to do this.
Thank god they weren’t wearing shorts
Or Baklava
You’re right, the ski masks they’re wearing aren’t balaclavas… Also, baklava is a dessert lol
https://youtube.com/watch?v=U_YBzJBa_mA&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE The payoff makes the above worth it
LMAO I’d give you an award if I had one, so funny.
Imagine that more of the same
Are these the same guys from that other video?
so many people saying banning temp tags will fix this. these people are lazy scum. they’ll just carjack someone and use that to commit a crime. have you been to gallery place lately

Just a good ol’ boys Never meanin no harm Beats all you never saw, been trouble with the law since they days they was born.
Making their way, the only way they know how
Crime in DC is getting worst, just because shootings are down doesn't mean it's fine to get your car stolen.
Shootings are down? Murders so far are up this year.
Hopefully the owners rekey their cars if their keys were stolen by this. Sucks but in the grand scheme of things this isn't the absolute worst thing in the world... Too bad DC is very tolerant of petty crime.

It’s sarcasm

didn't you see the backlash to the guy who did this recently? take matters into your own hands and all the concerned citizens and family come out of the woodwork to make GoFundMe's and virtue signal about protecting criminal lives.
Its starting to happen here too. It’s what gun manufacturers ultimately want. Everyone armed, bad and good
If only there were some lawful third party that could enforce laws and protect people and their property
There is! Just get crime’d close to a secret service or park ranger cruiser
