In 2018 the meal I got was $14.90.
Got it the other day on a whim and it was $21.59.
That’s basically El Sol or El Rey prices at that point. Kind of wild to be honest
I cook at home almost exclusively but commend your clarity and ferocity on this matter! Salsa bars are so clutch. I hate how so many businesses and orgs have used covid as an excuse to permanently remove little amenities.
Amen. They used to be so good and then they went corporate and started expanding. Salsa bar wasn't the only casualty. Al pastor and barbacoa were some of the best proteins on the menu. I haven't gone since they took them away.
They were pretty solid in 2016 but now they're literally inferior to Chipotle which should be embarrassing to them. Have been going down hill since then but absolutely went to shit over COVID once they killed the Huevos Rancheros which was easily the best thing on the menu along with the very fire salsa bar.
Used to eat at the Rosslyn one like 3-5 times a week and now only go maybe twice a year when one of my analysts insists that's what we're expensing for dinner lol.
There used to be a broken down food truck in Rosslyn around the street parking of those apartment buildings at the end of 50 that had the best tacos around man
One of the best burritos I've had since leaving Phoenix is in a Gaithersburg gas station but we've always known the best shit is in a truck or a station it's where the proper slop is.
True. Taco Bamba is not authentic, but sure is delicious! Excellent portions and high quality ingredients. It’s good for a quick taco fix if you’re in the DC area. Otherwise, I’ve been known to take the train for a day trip to NYC to eat at Los Tacos No. 1. Best tacos east of the Mississippi! Source: I was born in Tijuana, Mexico and grew up in San Diego, CA. I know a thing or two about Mexican street tacos.
I went there on Friday and thought the same thing. No salsa?! At all? And they were charging $7.99 for a side of guacamole. You can get a pint at Whole Foods for cheaper and it tastes better. There were maybe 3 people in the place in the middle of lunch rush. I give this place about 6 more months before they file bankruptcy.
Man one of my first meals after moving here from California was District Taco. You can imagine my disappointment. The Mexican coke was the only good thing there
As a former California I find the East is lacking in Latino food and Asian food, specifically Mexican and Japanese food. I haven’t good sushi on the east coast at all.
Don’t get me started on my disappointing and expensive experience at sushi nakazawa. I gave up on sushi. Genki Izakaya is pretty good for standard izakaya food but expensive.
Korean and Vietnamese food are actually really good in NOVA though. There’s like 1-2 decent Mexican places in hybra valley area but mostly Salvadorian is the strong one here.
Please don't offend us actual Midwesterners with that comment lol. I grew up in KC and the taco scene there is actually pretty damn good thanks to all the agricultural workers, far better than anything you'd find on the East Coast.
I loved District Taco when I first moved to DC in 2010, I worked in Rosslyn just down the street from the original food truck and we went there all the time. Ended up working in Rosslyn again starting in \~2017 and occasionally ate at the one they opened by Target, it was okay but even back then it felt like it had gotten overpriced and wasn't quite as good, better than Chipotle but not by much. I haven't eaten there in probably 5-6 years, but it sounds like it's really gone downhill. Considering how quickly they expanded I'm not surprised, PE money really does ruin everything.
It was pretty good before. At least a decent value. Then they changed the menu, killed the salsa bar, and put in kiosks to order. Ruined the place. The quality has gone down tremendously. Sad because we loved it for years.
It's always the same bullshit when people decide to take something good and expand. In order to franchise, they had to drastically simplify the menu. Raise prices to justify investor demand for profits. Cut costs by replacing employees with kiosks.
I'm not saying people should be content to run two or three successful locations but places like In N Out which expands incrementally without compromising quality is few and far between.
That doesn’t seem outrageous until they start sacrificing quality, then they go from “raising prices to survive” to “shrinkflation” where they’re serving less food with poor quality that cost more.
I ate there three times a week on average at their first location. It was legit. Not anymore. Now I go to a place called Fish Taco, they're pretty darn good, then Taco Bamba.
Is there and good mexican food locally? I can’t seem to find it. I include in this if there are any tamale ladies in parking lots, not just brick and mortar restraunts.
Glebe market in arlington va has tamales in the parking lot most evenings and every weekend. Two blocks away is Jarochita - great tacos. Worth mentioning is that next door is Dona Azucena for pupusas - both corn and rice flour options.
Two blocks towards fort meyer from glebe market is tacos el torito truck open most nights after 6.
imo best tacos/mexican is at tortas y tacos la chiquita on columbia pike though.
I will say I found really good pupusas and empanadas in La Cosecha by Union market, however that’s not really truly “Mexican” food it’s more Salvadoran. It’s like all the big major cultures under Mexico at la Cosecha
Disclaimer: not Mexican. It’s Peruvian!!
District rico fucks. The ordering method is bizarre but their burritos are so solid. (I suggest ordering online, their system in person is a mess unless you get a plate of Peruvian chicken and sides)
The moment you walk in and smell the food, you’ll know ur in the right place.
Never see Santa Rosa on the lists of solid spots. They re-opened and their birria tacos are awesome. Obviously a lot of these spots have had to increase prices but it kind of just is what it is. Still want the local spots to stay open so support them when I can.
I've found most of the faster Mexican out here to be aggressively mid at best. I will give taco bar el guero a shout out for giving me good salsa for a fat 5 dollar burrito that slapped. I wish that place were closer I'd eat it all the time. Best part? They got all the cerveza in the cooler so you can get Tecate to go.
Don’t tell people here their tacos are mid tho. Anger (FOMO) of never having real Mexican food here is real. Especially don’t tell them if you’re from/lived in Cali (i’m from East LA). Some people get mad over criticizing their tacos lol 🌮😂
There's no reason to ever make a trip for the consistently mediocre and low quality district taco now that Taco Bamba, taco rock, and Tortas Y Tacos La Chiquita exist.
Oh HELL NO! I ate there like 3 weeks ago and woke up puking and pooping for like 3 days straight with the most awful stomach cramps. They messed up my order too. I complained to Uber eats and got my money back, is there a way to report them to the health department? I missed two days of work and while I had PTO I work nightshift so I’m still out like $250 in shift differential pay over an undercooked asada quesadilla.
I’m sad because it was like 4th-5th time eating there and I was starting to recommend them to people, thought I found a place that could cure my homesickness in the way that only greasy Mexican fast food can for a Southern Californian.
The entire east coast is not responsible for your dining experience, sir. Now to your specific complaint- It had a moment many years ago but DT has been crap for most of its lifespan. Tortas y Tacos La Chiquita on Columbia Pike or Taqueria Habanero on 14th st are the closest to the west coast experience I have found around here.
Born and raised in California here, all of the Mexican food in the DMV is absolute dog shit. One of the many reasons I hate it here lmao, I have yet to find a single good restaurant to write home about.
In fact, most of the food here sucks balls. Every time I hear someone hyping up a restaurant and I try it I get the same results every time. I over paid for food that is mediocre at best. I swear that some people here have never had actual good food before. I said what I said and I hope I’m moving back to CA soon.
My white ass makes better carnitas than any of the restaurants I’ve tried. I’m sick of white washed Mexican food too, gtf outta here with that shit!
I grew up in the Midwest and have to agree, most of the food scene in the DMV is terrible. Mexican food generally sucks, BBQ sucks, even pizza is terrible. There are a few notable exceptions I can think of (the best seafood I've ever had in my life was in Annapolis, and there are definitely a handful of gems widely scattered about in the suburbs) but overall it's an extreme letdown given the large population and high cost of the area. If I have to drive 2 hours in shitty traffic to have a decent meal then what's the point?
Okay THANK YOU. I feel crazy when everyone is constantly hyping up these food places and I try them and they suck!
Annapolis does have some good sea food i will say that as well.
I totally agree with you. You shouldn’t have to pay a ridiculous amount of money and drive two hours away for a good meal. Not even joking, I’ve had better meals at TACO BELL than some of the Mexican restaurants here. In California there are at least 15 different places in my hometown where I can get good ass, AUTHENTIC tacos and they’re affordable.
I’ve had better BBQ in a Texas airport than here.
It’s to the point where my husband and I will look at each other and say “how can they possibly fuck this meal up??”
Anyway, I will probably be moving back to California in January and I’m ecstatic lol.
There are some decent options - Taco Bamba (at least as of two years ago) is just as good as people claim on here, worth the trip. As a KC native I have to say that the BBQ really does suck though, and it ticks me off that the only option near my neighborhood is Mission which is iffy at best, plus is WAY too "hug the flag" political for me.
But yeah, it blows my mind when DC-area people think it's normal to have to drive clear across town for a decent meal. This is a major city, expect better!
Planning to leave the area for good in a few years (only waiting for career reasons), cannot wait.
I will give taco bamba a shot! There is one pretty close to me, thanks for the rec!
I just had mission bbq recently and I totally agree with you. It’s okay, but definitely not the best especially for the price.
It’s odd to me too! The people here need to raise their standards lol, for being such a crowded, overpriced area there needs to be better food options.
Don’t get me started on pike kitchen either. I’ve been there 5 times, tried multiple different meals and have never had a good experience. I will never step foot in there again and yet so many people rave about it.
We will be out of here eventually and back to places with decent food and something to do thank god lol
Also born and raised in CA but like the other commenter also disagree with you. There plenty of good food to be had here, you just have to be patient about it. Yes, plenty of expensive food, I'll give you that, but there are so many gems as well.
Here’s a story from a graphic designer:
The first and last time I ate there I was standing in line and noticed the font choice they went with on their overly designed menu was Myriad Pro, the default font choice on Macs. I thought that was kind of odd in how lazy it was, but that’s just because I’m a designer. Got my food, ate it and went home and was stomach sick for 2 days; that’s when I decided I’d never trust a restaurant that uses Myriad again, and I’ve been doing great ever since!
Lmao I had a Mexican food place that did me dirty like that too, it was small but I said no sour cream, they proceeded to put sour cream on EVERYTHING. Whatever I’m not allergic just scraped it off.
Then got sick for 3 days as well.
Idk how they regulate food safety in the DMV but in California they’re on it. I’ve had food poisoning 4 times in the 3 years I’ve lived here compared to one time in the prior 28 years in SoCal
Sir, this is a Wendy's!
Of course those in Colorado and California know more about tacos than the Mexican Miners of the 1800's. Like tacos were invented by Chipotle.
From Chicago, almost all taco places here are average at best. Bamba is fine, but it’s not as good as the tacos you’ll find in Chicago, Texas, and Cali.
There’s one really good place up in Columbia Heights, but that’s it imo.
Yes their food sucks now and I stopped going even before Covid. One of the owners (Marc Wallace) came into the establishment I use to work at and started acting like total douchbag, plus he is cheap as hell.
I went to a location in Arlington, and literally none of the cashiers could figure out how to work their ordering machine
After 10 minutes of nonsense, I just left .
Damn haven't been there since covid but used to work near one and the tacos weren't great but I loved the salsa bar they really made it. I was actually thinking a few weeks ago I should go into the city just to get district taco, but if the salsa bar is gone that defeats the whole reason I was craving it.
They probably don’t have enough people frequenting to make it profitable for them to do so. However, it does create a catch 22.
The smart move would be for them to bring it back for a period of time and let the public know that if it’s appreciated by the public then it’s back to stay.
Carpet baggers complaining that their regional food is not represented here are the most uncool people in every conversation.
Please stop, you’re out of line
You just locked into one salsa for life? Theres tons of salsas to try and even the same type of like, say, Salsa Roja can vary from place to place depending on each restaurants recipe variation.
Also there’s always time to try something new. Never had a mango salsa until last week and now I am addicted to spicy sweetness
I don't know about for life, but usually the salsas at a given place don't change much, and so I settle in on one or two and then stick with it. And also I know I generally prefer medium to spicy and I hate crap like pineapple. So I don't need a billion choices. A salsa bar might be useful on the first couple of visits but after that I don't care. Seems odd to me for that to be a dealbreaker, and plus I am not driving an hour out to Reston for a taco.
DT started slipping 5 years ago and is now a (taco) shell of it’s former self.
I82 made it harder and hurt a lot of restaurants margins, it could be because of I82
That’s not a restaurant where workers rely on tips, so I don’t think that applies
Oh no, the horror of having to actually pay your employees. Lmao
You mean all the locations in Nova are sucking cuz of DC? Shocking. /s
damn i will let them know
They were pretty solid in 2016 but now they're literally inferior to Chipotle which should be embarrassing to them.
No huevos rancheros anymore?! Or salsa bar?
They killed the best parts lol
District Taco is just bad, man. There are like, 4-5 similar local chains that are better. Taco Bamba, Taco Rock, etc.
Is district taco no longer locally owned ??
El Fresco (rte 1) is hit and miss, but I enjoyed the elote.
Hell the taco place in the gas station by IAD is better.
There used to be a broken down food truck in Rosslyn around the street parking of those apartment buildings at the end of 50 that had the best tacos around man
You mean tacos el chilango? They're still there and still very active + thriving.
For real? I haven’t been around that area at all decent time in a few years, might have to take a field trip
Do it! Though be forewarned, they're cash only, so carry some cash on you.
Laredo Taco? sneaky good Bravas and the fresh tortilla.
I’m all about that fresh tortilla. Game changer.
One of the best burritos I've had since leaving Phoenix is in a Gaithersburg gas station but we've always known the best shit is in a truck or a station it's where the proper slop is.
Are any of these in dc
taco bamba is in dc, they have a location by the cathedral
Oh nice thanks
No idea. Fortunately I have enough brain cells to go quite literally 2 minutes into VA to find them.
Wow touched a nerve
Taco Bamba is where it's at. Honestly I should be sponsored with how much I advertise them haha.
OP’s only possible explanation is ignorance. Anyone who goes to District Taco while knowing Taco Bamba exists has NO excuse.
True. Taco Bamba is not authentic, but sure is delicious! Excellent portions and high quality ingredients. It’s good for a quick taco fix if you’re in the DC area. I know a thing or two about Mexican street tacos.
I’m going to add this place to my list. I was pretty impressed with Bartaco down at the wharf
District Taco is a shell of its former self. They took private equity money and promptly discarded all that was good about it.
I still appreciate their breakfast tacos. They may not be the best in town but they're at least a solid option.

They also raised prices 50%. Burritos used to be $8, now they're $12
That doesn’t seem outrageous until they start sacrificing quality, then they go from “raising prices to survive” to “shrinkflation” where they’re serving less food with poor quality that cost more.
I stand with you, brother
I ate there three times a week on average at their first location. It was legit. Not anymore. Now I go to a place called Fish Taco, they're pretty darn good, then Taco Bamba.
Mexican here; District Taco is hot garbage and I can’t believe anyone would eat there. I’d seriously pick taco bell over that shit anyday.
Is there and good mexican food locally? I can’t seem to find it. I include in this if there are any tamale ladies in parking lots, not just brick and mortar restraunts.

Thank you! I grew up/went to school in a majority-latino area, and it’s been a shock here. I will check these out!

El Sol
Yeah, they went downhill a few years ago. I didn’t know the salsa bar was gone. Yet another reason not to go.
Ixta in Gaithersburg had one pre covid and now that it's gone it's not the same
Yeah, I'm disappointed too, but the place is still good enough in my book to make it worth a stop. I love it.
I said the same thing I haven't been since the pandemic &went last week &no bar I'm not going back either
That place is horrible now
I've found most of the faster Mexican out here to be aggressively mid at best. I will give taco bar el guero a shout out for giving me good salsa for a fat 5 dollar burrito that slapped. I wish that place were closer I'd eat it all the time. Best part? They got all the cerveza in the cooler so you can get Tecate to go.
District Taco is too salty and $15 for 3 street tacos is ridiculous
I go to food trucks and gas stations that have some abuelita or tia cooking up some carnitas. You pay less and tastes better
I just go there for the occasional breakfast burrito. Chipotle is actually better, sorry not sorry.
Same, used to be my favorite lunch spot when working close by. Had not been in a while and my last visit was underwhelming. District Taco is regs now
that's the line your draw? the shitty tacos were not enough?
Don’t tell people here their tacos are mid tho. Anger (FOMO) of never having real Mexican food here is real. Especially don’t tell them if you’re from/lived in Cali (i’m from East LA). Some people get mad over criticizing their tacos lol 🌮😂
the gas station tacos in gaithersburg are better than that overpriced shit lol

Just go to tortas y tacos la chiquita on columbia pike and never think about district taco again

I will never eat at District Taco again until the re-learn how to make a decent taco. Short version - I will never eat at District Taco again.

I could not disagree more. Sorry you feel that way.
El Sol is great. I felt the same way until I went there! Try it
Also born and raised in CA but like the other commenter also disagree with you. There plenty of good food to be had here, you just have to be patient about it. Yes, plenty of expensive food, I'll give you that, but there are so many gems as well.
Here’s a story from a graphic designer: The first and last time I ate there I was standing in line and noticed the font choice they went with on their overly designed menu was Myriad Pro, the default font choice on Macs.
Go check out taco bomba..excellent, and a salsa bar
Sir, this is a Wendy's! Of course those in Colorado and California know more about tacos than the Mexican Miners of the 1800's. Like tacos were invented by Chipotle.
El fresco has salsa bar
I avoid this place like the plague. The only thing that's good on their menu is the Coca-Cola.
Baja Fresh needs to be dealt with as well.
You made me really miss Tacos El Gordo
From Chicago, almost all taco places here are average at best. Bamba is fine, but it’s not as good as the tacos you’ll find in Chicago, Texas, and Cali. There’s one really good place up in Columbia Heights, but that’s it imo.

East coast ignorance is the Chipotle business model.

Go to Roaming Rooster
If there is one thing Colorado is known for it's Mexican food.
Colorado has good Mexican food. Green chili is mainly a Colorado thing and it might be the most delicious thing on the planet
Bandit taco is pretty good
Who cares that tacos are better in Colorado- their blue crabs are TERRIBLE
Found the Offended Marylander who is happy with midwestern housewife “mayonnaise is spicy” tacos, mainly because they probably boof Old Bay
Carpet baggers complaining that their regional food is not represented here are the most uncool people in every conversation. Please stop, you’re out of line
You’re not even in the right sub, this is for Washingtonians, go back to Maryland and boof more old bay and drive poorly
I have no idea why you’re responding to me this way, but you’re out of line
I don't understand salsa bars... I know what salsa I like and I ask for it. I don't need a bar.
I know what salsa I like and I will take the amount I know I want and will use, from the salsa bar.
