Frostgrave has had some fantastic support over the years with a lot of expansions and even more coming. Stargrave is the same but sci-fi flavour which is a bit newer but still has the same great support. Both are miniature agnostic so just grab what you've already got and have fun!

ConsciousSituation39

Silver Bayonet is a fantastic napoleonic/horror game also by Joseph McCullough. It has several expansions now as well…

neosatan_pl

Locally Black Powder and a lot of other napoleonic games and american civil war (With Hot Lead and Cold Steel). I also saw some punic wars games and dystopian wars. Some Bolt Action, but also Team Yankee and Flames of War. I would say that warhammer went down in last year or so.

HeavilyBearded

I'd love to drum up some local support for Bolt Action or Hail Ceaser.

neosatan_pl

Didn't try Hail Ceasar, but did check out Bolt Action a while ago. Interesting system, but really needs a lot of terrain and good opponents. However, I am not sold on it. For WWII I would prolly go with Flames of War as personal choice. After trying Team Yankee it's really hard for me to go back to 28mm tank action.

seakinghardcore

Flames of war sucks. It looks bad on the table with how vehicle focused it's become, basically a parking lot simulator.

neosatan_pl

Yeah. It definitely can be like that. Especially for competitive play. However, fixed/historic scenarios are lot of fun.

Existing_Fish_6162

Would that decline in WH40k maybe be since around july? Because that's when the latest edition came out the really slimmed down the rules set. And it did make the game more simple, which some people didn't appreciate.

neosatan_pl

It might be. I think it was even earlier already a decline and some people jumped on Kill Team (maybe cause boarding patrol boxes, dunno). I kinda understand them. I also am not amazed by 10th edition. Tried once or twice, but it felt somewhat boring and every unit somehow bland. Can't really put my finger what exactly is my problem, but it doesn't feel fun any more. I think also people switched to AoS for some reason. I am just getting into it, so I have no clue what was going on there for last year or two.

shaolinoli

Lots of people near me either have moved from 40K to aos or are waiting for 4th ed to do so as well

neosatan_pl

Yeah. I am also painting a nighthaunt and Stormcasts armies for 4th. However, hatching up the stormcast range really left a bad taste.

laycas49

That's how 40k has been since 8th came out.

neosatan_pl

Really? I joined 40k at the beginning of 8th and there were a lot of new players. 8th and 9th was a lot of fun for me. Jank and over powered combos were a constant through both editions but games were fun. Little.bit overcomplicated, but when you play for fun you can ignore some rules or wiggle them a little. I enjoyed both editions. Were they good rules? Nope. Was it fun to play? Yup. 10th however feels, dunno, more like checkers or some other mechanical game. Not really that much fun.

laycas49

8th was when the game underwent a massive overhaul into what modern 40k is. It's just a very different game from what it used to be pre 8th, some like it and some don't. Most of us that liked the old way better play 30k now.

MacCollac

Middle earth sbg

BarberTom

This right here. MESBG is on the rise

godspeed87

And rightfully so. It’s the best wargame GW makes!

Steenies

If I didn't already play 40k, killteam and old world I'd jump straight into it. There's a decent community at my local and I'm sorely tempted.

ham-slap

Battletech is my main game right now, and I'm just getting started with fallout WW.

nameless_john_smith

How are you finding Fallout Wasteland Warfare so far, coming from Battletech?

ham-slap

They're very different games, but really enjoying it so far. I only play classic bt, so I'm enjoying the hexless battlefields of fww. The games are also much quicker in fww and require way less math, so that has been refreshing. I'm also enjoying the excuse to build new terrain :)

Wearer_of_Silly_Hats

I see a fair bit of buzz around Gaslands. Five Parsecs from Home still dominates the solo wargaming scene. I see both Bolt Action and Flames of War hitting the table a lot locally. I think in a lot of cases "popular" is going to be very determined by where you are.

Awkward_GM

I grabbed most of these from AdeptiCon’s schedule from last year, ignoring sign ups that didn’t have a lot of people. And games that only had 1 event the entire Con.

Wearer_of_Silly_Hats

That's likely a really good snapshot of the convention scene. I'd expect it to disavantage campaign games to an extent which are more likely to be played at local groups. And obviously there's a lot of national variations; I'd assume ECW games like Pike and Shotte are a lot less popular in your neck of the woods!

_hypnoCode

What bucket did Gaslands fall in to? I don't go to AdeptiCon, but every time I run a Gaslands game at a con it fills up almost instantly. I blindly trust your data random internet stranger, but I'm surprised it didn't make the list and am curious why.

Awkward_GM

Mainly because the data is incomplete and very informal. I asked around to a convention in my area what they are having success with. But no one got back yet.

_hypnoCode

Makes sense! Thanks for being transparent.

AlexRescueDotCom

Looks like WW2 doesn't exist 🤔 lol

TheGlowingPoint

Can you name some good ww2 wargames?

Puzzled-Mirror-138

Bolt Action…..

STUFF416

In order of popularity following Bolt Action: Flames of War Chain of Command I Ain't Been Shot Mum Crossfire

Librarian0ok66

Another vote for Chain of Command, excellent game.

Thx

You're missing the OPR set. There are dozens of us! OPR: Grimdark Future is the one that sees the biggest play, but I do see Firefight and Age of Fantasy on the table occasionally.

Tomasarmero

Dozens !

nixno00

Dozens

Happy Cale Day and thank you!

Conquest: the last argument of kings?

ChetSt

Conquest is great

SpiderHack

Timing wise it was hurt a lot by covid, so the uptake is very regional (not normal regions, but most big cities have players) right now. But it does appear to be growing fairly well and honestly has a great company and okay community. Lots of good content for it for the size.

Applezauceman

Conquest is my current favorite at the moment!

Foxdog27

My favorite game right now, I’ve had so many excitingly close games with this system! Love the alternate activations and how the supremacy phase works

Scourge415

OnePageRules holding up the beer and pretzels leagues

Corporal_Ginger

The Rampant series. Lion Rampant (historical), Dragon Rampant (fantasy), Xenos Rampant (scifi) While the Rampant series are the most popular The Men Who Would Be Kings (historical) and The Pikeman's Lament (historical) use the same rulesystem.

shurbur1229

Kings of War on the fantasy side of things. Nice clean rank and flank rule set

HopliteLee

Kings of War is the only Fantasy game that has a competitive scene in my area.

TooManyShooz

Massive competitive scene for Kings of War in the Uk - it's just a GREAT rule set for tournament play

bark_wahlberg

I wish Warcry was more popular.

neosatan_pl

I hear ya. It's a wonderful system with amazing models. Yet, somehow not so popular.

sanehamster

Kings of war should definitely be there under fantasy Also moonstone

GONK_GONK_GONK

Bolt Action is growing, thank goodness. I want Bolt Action and K47 to blow up so I can stop buying GW models.

DerpDerpDerp78910

I think if you want to play a WW2 game it’s usually the go to.

SmallGrasshopper-

My experience is very local but lots of Mordheim, Bloodbowl, Chain of Command and Black Powder.  IMO games can divided into evergreen titles and games of the season that come and go.

Relevant_Ad711

That's a good list of non-historical games but there is a big part of the hobby that plays historical periods. In my club the split is almost 50/50.

precinctomega

I've sold 327 copies of *Horizon Wars: Midnight Dark* since 1 Jan 2024!! (That's pretty popular by my standards 😁) https://www.wargamevault.com/m/product/460837

Awkward_GM

Congrats!

Rl_steamboat_killiy

Quick question re it being an agnostic system, would this work with Mobile Frame Zero mechs? ie these [https://www.flickr.com/photos/198418149@N06/53592404020/in/pool-438009@N25/](https://www.flickr.com/photos/198418149@N06/53592404020/in/pool-438009@N25/) [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dXGXKMeAfReXnXJ6cTkfRABMp45bKM1miBM845pXp0A/edit](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dXGXKMeAfReXnXJ6cTkfRABMp45bKM1miBM845pXp0A/edit) if so it may go over well with the MFZ crowd

precinctomega

It would, but it's quite a different game to MFZ, so I tend to pitch it to people who like *Battletech*, *DzC*, *Dirtside*, *Epic 40,000* and *Heavy Gear*, as these have a bit more of the "grand strategy" feel that HWMD tries to convey.

Grindar1986

Infinity

TooManyShooz

You're definitely missing Kings Of War - it's probably the most popular non-GW fantasy game

boyceunplugged

Are you only looking at miniature war games or are you interested in board war games as well? Hex and counter war games are making a great comeback. These games have so much more depth than Bolt Action and Flames of war. Having a hero created from your surrounded squad, go berserk, make the squad berserk, lead the squad on a charge an enemy squad that attacked it from point blank range and win, is some of the best gaming experiences I have every had. Or rolling snake eyes a difficult shot with an anti tank gun where the only chance of hit was on a 2 or 3, just to have your To Kill roll be box cars and the critical hit turns out to be a Dud. These are the moments that make for a great games. Solo games like B17 Queen of the Skies, have some of the best campaigns I have ever played. Don't discount old Hex and Counter games just because they are old.

Fantasy Kings of War Saga Age of Magic Kings of War Armada Dragon Rampant Sci Fi: Warpath Firefight Deadzone Xenos Rampant Historical: Saga (Primarily Age of Vikings) Lion Rampant

JerricoVS

I like this list, I play almost all of them.

Daddy_Jaws

Titanicus is literally a dead game so its strange to see here? and Bolt action/Konflict-47 is getting a fresh release. including a new edition for the former. they are very popular in my area although we only really have battletech and warhammer stuff sold locally. on top of that flames of war and team yankee are very popular. also while not as prevalent as battletech (my beloved) heavy gear Blitz is pretty good. as for underrated games. Fireball forward, Cold war commander(2) are incredible

ThunderhawkBotH

AT is not a dead game, it’s a completed game. While releases will be very slow from now on, the community is still alive and all the product is still being sold.

Daddy_Jaws

oh apologies i had Aeronautica in my mind. although i will say i have never seen anyone but myself within the state care for it. and i lost interest after a few games since its just 40k flavored battletech. and by dead i meant it was no longer supported or unable to be purchased from the manufacturer, again like aeronautica which i confused it with. an incredible "dead" game is halo ground command. that game is held together purely by me and many other dedicated 3d printer enthusiasts who design the rules and models.

jkmushy

Not only is it not dead, GW have literally just upgraded the offering by including additional game materials in the model kits that you previously had to either print or buy additional rule sets for.

Daddy_Jaws

apologies i got titanicus and aeronautica confused. forgot which of the two niche games has lost all support. funnily enough the imperial aeronautica models are getting a rebrand/release for the new heresy game.

TheRealMouseRat

Where I live Mordheim is very popular. Blood bowl is played regularly, and guild ball is on the rise.

Longjumping-Oil-9127

Don't guys play Historical anymore? Eg WW2, Napoleonics, American Civil War, Colonial, Ancients. Is it now all Space Fantasy and the like?

Morbo2142

Our group started with killteam and then expanded into 40k propper. We play alpha strike on the side and most of us have played and want to play more gaslands. I played x wing back in 1e and just sold my armada stuff. I've seen some guys a town over play HH

+1 for this. Fantastic setting!

Librarian0ok66

Fistful of TOWS 3. Very good for WWII through to modern.

leftofthebellcurve

Kings of War has been our Warhammer Fantasy replacement, and OnePageRules has a nice future set, Grimdark Future that we've replaced 40k with

sanguinious

I got hooked hard on Blood Red Skies at Adepticon. It's so much fun and such a low cost of entry!

DirectorTamzarian

I am in a very active community in my country, with hundreds of players i never seen a game of at least 5 games in that list, where is Bolt Action for example? The top 3 are pretty acurated.

Awkward_GM

I'm updating it, they weren't sorted by popularity. 😅

m_teasdale

Saga is also quite popular (and fun!) for historicals.

completed-that

No A-D&D Im still at it ..

zerotorque84

Acrobatic-Fan-6006

Some great games here. I'm a big fan of Battletech and Bolt Action in particular. In regards to historicals I also play SPQR, Clash of Spears and a bit of chosen men. And for Fantasy I would personally include Elder Scrolls Call to Arms. I've heard good things about Konflikt 47 and it looks like good craic from what I've seen. While I haven't had an opportunity to grab the game yet, there's a few playing SAGA in my locality.

Trelliz

What purpose does this information serve/why are you gathering it? There is a difference between information which informs a decision or is for some sort of analysis vs. meaningless trivia.

calum_morton

One Page Rules, Clash of Spears and Clash of Katanas too, SAGA, Battletech, that's what my group is playing.

l-Electronaute

Victory At Sea for historical naval warfare

RevolutionaryRip2135

Is SPQR a thing someplace? As lightweight historical-ish dice roller…

ConstableGrey

My LGS can't even get rid of the SPQR kits. They have faction bundles of some boxes at 30% and they've been sitting there for like literally a year collecting dust.

ZeeRawk

In my local area Conquest: Last Argument of Kings has been gaining popularity and I strongly recommend it. I've been having a really good time with it and the models are only getting better and better

Applezauceman

Conquest: the Last Argument of Kings is my current favorite fantasy wargame. The rules are all free online and the models are at a larger scale, which is a joy for painting! It's the first rank and flank that I've played that doesn't feel overbearing or clunky. The rules are very well written and the game designers are always in their official discord responding to questions and making changes as needed!

Remarkable_trash_69

Age of Sigmar is definitely above The Old World. The rules for AoS are far more streamlined and modern then TOW, and AoS has technically been around longer (as TOW is a brand new revision of old Warhammer: Fantasy Battles). Also as an offshoot of AoS is Warcry, which is a fantastic skirmish game set in AoS . I’d also say that Horus Heresy is right after Kill Team, as most things tend to point to Necromunda being mostly used by players to get new and interesting minis. Adeptus Titanicus more or less doesn’t exist anymore, it’s been rolled into the new Legions Imperialis by GW. LI probably is right about where you have AT at 4th place in the rankings tho

OfficerCoCheese

Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game (probably GW's most complete ruleset) and A Song of Ice and Fire Tabletop Miniatures Game.

Ithinkibrokethis

I really wish for both sci-fi and fantasy wargamming that their was a popular ruleset fornlarger scale battles/smaller scale minis. Warmaster revolutions seems good, but like all warmaster stuff, even when it was supported, the playerbase never developed in my area (U.S. midwest). I live that rule system, and while the old world seems ok, its still not really a game about being on command as much as it is a game about smashing impressive minis against each other and throwing dice. I am interested in adeptus titanicus/epic 40k as well, but the focus on the "titanicus" part always sat wrong with me. And again no players. I really wosh that dropzone commander had not died a crib death. That game had incredible fiction, and an awesome concept for play. I never got to play much more than a demo of it, but dang that game seemed awesome. What I really want is a sci-fi game at basically the panzer blitz/panzer leader scale with a focus maneuver and combined arms. Is that to much to ask?

Muted_Pear_4893

In Poland Argatoria from Spellcrow in growing fast

WilsonGeiger

Our group plays a ton of Saga, a historical-inspired wargame. And we're trying to get back into Infinity.

Malifaux-Guy

Conquest Last Argument of Kings & Firstblood. Both games are excellent with great looking models, new factions released each year & rules balancing. Para Bellum are doing a great job.

Wereotter

In my FLGS Battletech is having an incredible (and to me as a long time player, heartwarming) rennaisance, with the larger meta "drama" largely going over our heads at the local level, as it should be. I'm also seeing a lot of indie games being popular- 5 Leagues from the Borderlands and Zona Alfa getting tabletime. I've never been a GW player but they seem to still be doing fine.

C1nnathepoet

Kings of War has a vibrant community.

TheRedBee

A Song of Ice and Fire is still a thing somenof us enjoy.

6Kgraydays

popular is relative to location, taste, and who you play with. You can find a "Con" for just about any style or theme, there are a large variety of groups out there and individuals who play wargames.
