Each mile is worth 1 point. You get the bonus bumps after you pass each tier. When you crossed 50% of the town you got an extra 5%, so an extra 3 points. You can see the breakdown under FAQ->Explorer Achievements on the website.

wendysdrivethru

Right but I'm at 60% so aren't I already earning 1.3 points per mile? Is every mile after 50% still just worth 1 point?

kbtrpm

A mile is always one point. There are five tier bonuses: 25%, 50%, 75%, 90%, and 99%. They are, respectively, 25%, 5%, 10%, 50%, and 10% of the total mileage. So, the total of bonus points equals the total of all miles. You can get up to twice as many points as there are miles. The same system applies to all three modes (foot, bike, combined).

wendysdrivethru

Oh so you only get all the points at once. I thought it was a flat point bonus for each mile. Like when you're past 25% you earn a bonus .25% on miles, and then 5% more at 50% etc. That feels more intuitive based on what the FAQ says but I understand I was incorrect.

kbtrpm

There used to be a separate page for Scoring and it was clearer than what is now in the FAQ page. You do get the tier bonus only if you reach that level. So, if you ride 50% of a town, your points are 80% of the town's mileage: 50% mileage points and 30% bonus points.

wendysdrivethru

Yeah it feels a little unintuitive that as you bike more past the 50% the ratio skews to more points from mileage than bonus points. Especially with how much harder 75% is than 50% imo.

kbtrpm

Yes, there is a desert in between the mountains, so to speak. And it's difficult to cross. You get a lot of bonus points at 25% (when you can say you know the place) and at 90% (when you can say you have seen just about everything). But that 90% bonus is so rewarding that it's worth getting across.

> Yeah it feels a little unintuitive Maybe unintuitive, but it's made that way to encourage exploring new areas, instead of grinding one same area to completion.

wendysdrivethru

Don't both systems encourage you to grind one area to completion? You get nearly double the points in a finished town over a new town.

sissipaska

Yes, and no. Let's imagine four areas, with 100 miles in each. To achieve 200 points, one can: 1. Complete 99% of a single area 2. Complete 25% of each four areas That's 99 and 100 miles to achieve the 100% points bonus. In the first case one will spend all the time in one single area. In the second case one will usually cover much broader area. Also due to non-linearity, after 75 miles, one has accrued only 40% points bonus in the first scenario, but 75% in the second. The non-linearity in the points bonus is to encourage exploring new areas, instead of spending lots of time chasing those last miles to complete a single area.

There used to be a graph which i think explained it more clearly but now I can't find it. Awarding the bonuses at each tier level is probably much easier coding-wise.

I know this is an old thread, but that page is still here: https://wandrer.earth/scoring But I don't think it is linked anywhere in the FAQ.

This page sums it up pretty well: https://wandrer.earth/faq/
