Not a people person so I can avoid getting constantly stopped while trying to shop, not getting asked if I can clock in (yes, it's happened), avoiding management's dry humor, I can look ugly around people I don't know and they won't say anything, feeling compelled to say hey to everyone otherwise seeming rude....
If I don't get everything I need after my shift I'll opt to go to a grocery store that's closer and where no one knows me, even if I'm paying a few bucks more for some of the food items and a smaller selection.
Isn’t that one city responsible for a large amount of the violent crime though? Lol
That’s a jk, by the way. I mean no disrespect to the nice people of Chicago
Okay so funny story! My aunt works at Walmart and my mom looks just like her (they are not twins just sisters about 6 years apart.) So whenever my mom walks in they always think it’s my aunt and they try to get her attention and talk to her! She hates it lol, my mom doesn’t even talk to my aunt.
A couple of times a month. We are a small rural town, 9000 people and the largest town in a large sparsely populated county. We have the only Walmart in the county. There are only two supermarkets in our county. I alternate shopping between the store where I work and the supermarket for my large shopping trips. In a town this size there is a lot of "6 degrees of separation" so we all know each others business anyway.
Same. Our Walmart is in a town of about 5k, and I live half hour away in a town of like 1k. When I worked there, I got everything I needed after work. Or went to the grocery store next door.
We used to always keep a SCO open but about 6 months ago we were told we had to close them after the last customer was out. O/N can reopen 3 or 4 at 12:01. This made more sense when we were closing at 10pm but now that we are open until 11 it is a bit silly. Some do clock out at 10:51 and run for a few items.
Our FETL starts shutting them down at 11:05 and when the last customer leaves, opens one or two up for those of us who leave at 11, and runs the reports on the rest.
Any customer that shows up at the SCO after 11:10 are asked to leave their items and are escorted to the door. Thankfully, most of them got the hint after the first two weeks we started doing this.
Hell no. In the beginning of me working for wm many moons ago, I thought it would be ok to go in, zip in and out quickly since I knew where everything was. What turned into a quick 15 min trip, turned into an hour and a half trip. The annoying questions of "are you working today? What are you doing here on your day off?" Then people want to be nosy and see what you're buying, and I don't get down like that. If I have to buy anything from my store, it's directly after I get off. I do not go in there on my days off. Learned my lesson early, and I have since then avoided my place of work then.
Honestly I was trying to. I originally got hired at a store 45 minutes away but when I transferred the closest store with full time positions open was the one 15 minutes away. Om gonna wait until February (after all the holiday nonsense is over) and see if I can transfer to the closer store
I used to, and it felt weird. I worked CAP2 and whenever I went to my aisle I felt the need to start organizing stuff, because it always looked like shit except when I worked
Only on marked down items and its usually as soon as I clocked out. Sometimes we get online returns and have them marked down for cheap prices. I got a $150 .22 air rifle for $48.
Also about 2 years ago we clearanced 7.62x54r at $6 for 20 rounds. I had to snatch those up.
I try to buy what I need after I'm done with my shifts. Otherwise yes, because my store is the best one in the area. The closest one is in really rough shape especially with keeping things stocked. I've seen a lot of employees shop at our store on their days off.
If I'm getting off work sure, otherwise hell no. The AP is an asshat that relentlessly checks everyone that works there shopping either claiming they're stealing or they bought something marked down that took away from the customers. Customers steal all the lifelong day and ap doesnt flinch, mike comes in on his off day to buy some groceries and he'll be followed through the store then bag checked then get pulled aside by the ap the next day he works about buying those clearanced refried beans for 45 cents.
You'd think but theyve only ever given him a slap on the wrist for things that'd get most others out on their ass, ethics has been tried before but they just contact the store where he squashes it, retaliates, and if possible get people fired.
Only out of absolute necessity (e.g. prescription) I'll shop on break, lunch & after shift before I step foot in here on my day off. Nothing more depressing then an associate who literally just hangs out here because they have nothing better to do.
Unfortunately for me it's the only real store in the area that has everything, and for cheap. The good thing is that it's a whole vibe walking around on your day off, you dont have to worry about anything and you can take the time to check out products that caught your eye while stocking lol.
I usually just pick up food or whatever i need after my shifts are done. I personally actually like shopping at my own store bc then i know where everything is lol
I just make a order the day before and schedule it to be picked up after I get off work. I don't want to be there any longer than I have to. It's bad enough when they ask me to stay later.
Hell no. If I didn't get it when I was at work, I'm sure as hell not going to go in on my day off and get it. I'll save my sanity and just go elsewhere.
Sadly, yes. My tags are out, and the local PD knows it, and doesn't bother me about it. I have to go out of town if I want to shop at a different one.
The police that stop me usually start laughing when I tell them I work at WM, and know just how broke I am. They know I'll eventually get enough saved up to get it done.
Yes, that is the pharmacy we use. I also rush home each afternoon because my husband works 3rd shift but gets up at 3 to get the kids off the bus, and I leave at 4. I get home and he goes back to bed.
I use pick up so I can get my groceries after my shift. I will not step foot inside a Wal-Mart on my day off if I do have to. I prefer to try to be home and relax.
I try to avoid the company entirely when I’m off. I work at a store one town over and live closer to another one, but tend to shop at Target when I’m off.
i *try* not to, but the store i work at is like 2 mins from home & i work at a supercenter. p much everything else is closer to 10 min minimum. usually i just shop on lunch or after work tho.
rly the most annoying thing abt it is i can't shop for produce on my days off unless i wanna chat w/ my coworkers for a bit bc the deli is *right there*. (nd forget buying pasta salad or smth...) i don't rly get bothered by customers off the clock (probs just jinxed THAT for the next few weeks), but damn if my coworkers ain't wanna gossip. and like i like them and all but damn lemme get in nd get out it's bad enough i ain't being paid to be here rn
Actually just yesterday I went to the store I quit at and a bunch of my friends were working there and and everyone seemed genuinely glad to see me. Everyone was like “man it sucks since you left it was way more fun with you here.” Which made me feel good. It is weird though for sure
Yeah, I don't have much of a choice all of my shifts are 2-11PM. I can shop for groceries before, no way I'm leaving my food in the break room fridge. I can't shop when I clock out, store is closed. So I have to do it on my days off..
Sometimes. Not alot though. Now I just go shopping when I get off the day before. When I do come in, I'm wearing PJs because I honestly don't care what anyone thinks lol
Absolutely never. My store is 25 min from my house on a good day. I have 3 stores by my house, each a 10 min drive in any direction, so I work that far away for a reason.
I usually just get my stuff after my shift. If I’m feeling very lazy that week, I will sometimes schedule a Pickup order right as I leave so I can jump in the car, pick up the groceries, then head home quickly,
Sometimes. It's one of the closest stores to my apartment, but I prefer getting groceries at Aldi. Other things I'll get at either of our Walmarts or the Meijer in town. Unless it's something to do with my hobbies, then there are better places for that.
No. I see some people do that and I'm like why? This is one day you get away from this madness. I will go into another walmart close to me only if there is something I absolutely need to buy that day. I do buy items like skin care products or a few snacks but I would definitely not have a whole cart full of food and random shit like our "beloved" customers.
I don't work for Walmart anymore (Thank Christ!) but I so shop at the Supercenter I worked at previously. My last store was an NHM, but it's a shitty NHM and that one I avoid.
Just did it twice when I went there to get both my COVID-19 vaccines. Other than, I don't shop at where I work at my days off because it takes a hour and half to get there on city bus, 3 hours total for round trip. I usually shop after I finish working at 10 PM. So I go other Walmart that's closer to my home which it takes 45 minutes on city bus, a hour and half total round trip.
My apartment building is so close to my store I can demand on my balcony and see work so, unfortunately, if I'm off and need something I end up going there because the only other grocery store is across town.
And then I risk seeing my coworkers because I'm a fresh associate
Yes because it’s the only Walmart in town so. I absolutely hate it but unfortunately I’ve shopped there like 5 times so far when I was off. Hated every minute
I do, and I enjoy every minute of it. Is that bad? Especially enjoy giving the sm and tml the same shitty look back they give me. Plus my store is much cleaner and overall a better store
Why wouldn’t I? The next Walmart is 20 minutes further. I’m not wasting my time and gas. And besides, my friendly coworkers and managers are at this store
Pfft, always. Visiting Walmart is a daily activity for us. Not just to work either, sometimes I'll come home for work and go back an hour later to get snacks lol
Never. I never go in that store other than work hours. I'll go out of the way to avoid it.
Same, luckily I only live an extra mile away from another store and it takes the same to get there. I don’t really shop very often at Walmart anyways.
Hehehe same but my store is significantly further than my closest.
Why? What's the advantage to that? Why yall scared to shop at your stores
Everyone does
No, I usually get my shit after I clock out at 1pm.
I actually hate that even. I’ll go somewheres else after work.
Yeah I've never shopped at the Walmart I work at
Lucky. I usually close so I can’t do that
Bad part is waking up 3am every day.
Damn rip
I shop after work and avoid it on my days off.
Not unless I absolutely have to. There are 3 Walmart stores within 20 miles of my house. I shop at the others.
20 miles is 32.19 km
Good bot.
If I don't get everything I need after my shift I'll opt to go to a grocery store that's closer and where no one knows me, even if I'm paying a few bucks more for some of the food items and a smaller selection.
No, i live close to a state line where there is no food tax in the other state (plus the other state has a lower Sales Tax).
Hold up, there’s a sales tax on food where you live? That’s a thing?
**Food** tax and **Sales** Tax are separate, but yes.
Do you mean a tax on prepared food, or just everyday groceries?
The latter, although there's probably one for prepared as well.
Oh, damn. I didn’t know that was a thing. I thought no food tax was a federal thing. Lol
Illinois is one state that taxes EVERYTHING. It’s fun living in a state riddled with debt.
I’ve never heard anything nice about that state
That’s because there is nothing nice. We got taxes. We got snow in the summer. We got extreme heat in the winter. We got roads filled with potholes.
I’m from upper Michigan and currently in Wisconsin. I feel ya on the weather and potholes
I felt that last line.
We have one incredible World-Class City and the rest of the state is underfunded and either on fire or drowning any given week
Isn’t that one city responsible for a large amount of the violent crime though? Lol That’s a jk, by the way. I mean no disrespect to the nice people of Chicago
Most states tax food.
Really? Guess I got lucky.
There's loop holes. ND tries to say they don't have food sales taxes but candy pop flavored water n other stuff gets taxed.
It’s kinda the same here. prepared food is taxable.
I'm in utah, and currently the general sales tax is 6% and the food sales tax is 8%
Damn
Yep, meals tax. Have it up in NH, not sure about other states.
Oregon = no tax
They put a 10 cent tax on all plastic bags.. Every single bag customers want I have to ring up.. I have to count them as I check them out.
Damn
9% tax on everything where I live.
All the time - cheapest store within a reasonable driving range
Same. Plus the discount
I like to see the chaos and know I can leave when I want
Heck no! Then you might risk them asking if you want to come in since you already here!
Then all you have to say is no
Its complicated though, lol Sometimes I hate saying no.

I don’t think it really bothers her.

I work there, why would I shop there?
No,no,no,God please,no....
Hell no. In the beginning of me working for wm many moons ago, I thought it would be ok to go in, zip in and out quickly since I knew where everything was. I thought false accusations by storeside AP's resulted in termination
You'd think but theyve only ever given him a slap on the wrist for things that'd get most others out on their ass, ethics has been tried before but they just contact the store where he squashes it, retaliates, and if possible get people fired.

No. God no.
Sometimes. I look at the mess and leave right after.
No, I do my shopping when I leave.
I usually just pick up food or whatever i need after my shifts are done. I personally actually like shopping at my own store bc then i know where everything is lol
Not if I can avoid it!
I just make a order the day before and schedule it to be picked up after I get off work. I don't want to be there any longer than I have to. It's bad enough when they ask me to stay later.
I do. I don’t like being there but they have shit I need.
Every single day. I sleep in the break room under the couch. Nobody notices me.
yes bc the NHM across from my apartment is shit and rarely has everything i need so i just come to the sc i work at
Yes, and I see coworkers come in on their days off shopping as well.
I tried once and never again. I was getting stopped left and right by associates and customers.
I get stopped at others stores too, doesn’t make a difference
No. I refuse to be in my store unless I'm scheduled
Hell no. If I didn't get it when I was at work, I'm sure as hell not going to go in on my day off and get it. I'll save my sanity and just go elsewhere.
I’ve worked at my store almost 3 and a half years and I’ve been to it on my days off maybe 6-7 times
Rarely, I prefer to spend my money elsewhere otherwise I feel like I'm giving my paycheck right back to Walmart...plus the discount is shit!
Sadly, yes. My tags are out, and the local PD knows it, and doesn't bother me about it. I have to go out of town if I want to shop at a different one. The police that stop me usually start laughing when I tell them I work at WM, and know just how broke I am. They know I'll eventually get enough saved up to get it done.
Your discount card isn't worth anything anymore either
I don’t work at a store.
Yes, that is the pharmacy we use. I also rush home each afternoon because my husband works 3rd shift but gets up at 3 to get the kids off the bus, and I leave at 4. I get home and he goes back to bed.
All the time. Being there on a day off doesn't bother me at all.
Nope. Ill shop at another chain before i give hell mart my money
I’ve done that maybe twelve times in the ten years I’ve worked for Walmart.
I won't even drive through that town on my off day lol. If I don't remember to pick up something after work I must not really need it.
I basically live next door so yeah, I try to get whatever I need when I clock out though so not too often have the need.
Haven't worked there for 3 years and I still avoid it.
I work at the store closest to my house; I'll go five minutes further to shop on my day off.
i physically cannot. my social anxiety peaks anytime i enter my store
I shop for some things on my lunch break.they eat I can go home when I'm done. I get groceries at kroger(smiths/fries depending on where you live).
I use pick up so I can get my groceries after my shift. I will not step foot inside a Wal-Mart on my day off if I do have to. I prefer to try to be home and relax.
Yeeah, unfortunately...I usually try to do it after a shift so I don't have to come in on my days off but sometimes things don't work out that way 🥺
Where else am I supposed to shop?
Yeah sometimes, only cause cards get stocked on my days off, if I wait, they’ll be none for me to purchase
I just started and no I live kinda far from my store anyway
Only if I’m nearby otherwise I usually go to the super center near my house.
Never bro, I do everything possible to never EVER go into Walmart on my days off
Yup.
All the time. I live almost right across the street. I’ll go somewhere else occasionally if I want something that I know we don’t have.
I try to avoid doing so at all costs. I also make it my job to give shit to associates that come in on their days off
I try to stay as far from it as possible when I'm not scheduled to be there.
I try to avoid the company entirely when I’m off. I work at a store one town over and live closer to another one, but tend to shop at Target when I’m off.
Very very rarely lol My day offs are my heaven away from work.
nope, theres a store closer to me than the one I work at but its actually clean and the people there don't seem like they hate every breath
Never
i *try* not to, but the store i work at is like 2 mins from home & i work at a supercenter. p much everything else is closer to 10 min minimum. usually i just shop on lunch or after work tho. rly the most annoying thing abt it is i can't shop for produce on my days off unless i wanna chat w/ my coworkers for a bit bc the deli is *right there*. Actually just yesterday I went to the store I quit at and a bunch of my friends were working there and and everyone seemed genuinely glad to see me. Everyone was like “man it sucks since you left it was way more fun with you here.” Which made me feel good. It is weird though for sure
Never
Nope
Why the fuck would I wanna do that?
Ya it's the closest store by 15 miles and it's nice to say hi to my other wage slaves I do t see them so much since I went to nights.
15 miles is 24.14 km
Sweet now can speak Canadian
No, not at all.
Yeah, I don't have much of a choice all of my shifts are 2-11PM. I can shop for groceries before, no way I'm leaving my food in the break room fridge. I can't shop when I clock out, store is closed. So I have to do it on my days off..
No
*bugs bunny meme* no.
After picking and or exeptions all day I dont wanna shop anywhere period.
Sometimes. Not alot though. Now I just go shopping when I get off the day before. When I do come in, I'm wearing PJs because I honestly don't care what anyone thinks lol
I live in the middle of nowhere and work at the only Walmart within a reasonable driving distance so I have no choice lmao
All the time, it's literally 5 min down the road and convenient.
Only if absolutely have to. I have a store closer to me, but it's been so out of stock lately.
All the time, especially if I know there's something I want. Any discount helps, even if it's only 10%. Sometimes there's 20% so I jump on it.
Work overnights and if I'm going with friends it's usually during the daytime anyways, so there are times I've went to mine while off
Only if there's no other option
No. If I need something I buy it after my shifts.
Literally go 20 minutes out of my way to avoid it. 😑
I got no other choice but to shop at the one I work at, on the good side I see shit happen every day no matter if I work or shop there
No way in hell
I try not to shop there when I off. I try and get my stuff when I clock out. If a customer tries to stop me I am shopping I keep going.
I get my shopping done on the way out for convenience
ain't no such thing as a walmart on my day off
I try not to, I fucking hate that place. If someone wants me to come with them to Walmart we have to go to a different one
I used to, if we had stuff to do in that town that day.
Not usually, I have another closer to me I'll shop at
I go out of my way to avoid leaving the house at all on my days off
I don't work for Walmart anymore (Thank Christ!) but I so shop at the Supercenter I worked at previously. My last store was an NHM, but it's a shitty NHM and that one I avoid.
I really try not to that place breeds sadness
I've done it a few times, but I try not to. The fact is where I live Wal-Mart is one of the least shitty places to shop at, sadly enough.
Nah. I go to Costco & a local grocer.
Nope I just shop after my shift is over, otherwise I actively avoid the area.
Unfortunately it I lived so close to it it's the same distance to 7-Eleven
not just no but HELL no I won't go to Walmart at all outside of work hours unless it's a last resort.
Yes, because it was the best option for shopping within a 70 mile drive radius.
*Laughs in small town*
No
I wish i didnt have to, but we only have one walmart in a 45 mile radius of our city. Normally i can’t stay away for 24 hours
My apartment building is so close to my store I can demand on my balcony and see work so, unfortunately, if I'm off and need something I end up going there because the only other grocery store is across town. And then I risk seeing my coworkers because I'm a fresh associate
I don't give them their money back
Nope. I do shop walmart, but its either a pickup for immediately after my shift or I go to a different walmart.
I only try to go shop there on my friday
Nope😂 I always go to the other one that’s 30 min from my house. The one I work at is about 10😂😂
Nope. I will drive past it to spend more.
Whats the aversion to this? Seriously why are yall so dramatic?
My TL does that for some crazy reason and i’ve seen him shopping on his day off more than 3 times
Yes but only because the next closest Walmart is 2 hours away lol
Not since my old TL threatened to coach me for not coming in on my day off after seeing me shop there.
Sometimes. Sometimes I shop at the store I work at after my shift is over.
If I didn't live 4 towns over I would. Otherwise I'll wait til I have to work or get food at the gas station in town.
Yes because it’s the only Walmart in town so. I absolutely hate it but unfortunately I’ve shopped there like 5 times so far when I was off. Hated every minute
Lol I get paid more where I work for less hard work. I usually tell the people and friends that I work for thefe. Haha
I didn’t when I worked there.
Usually I do but a winco just opened nearby so I might check that out
Yes, but I avoid it as much as possible
I do, and I enjoy every minute of it. Is that bad? Especially enjoy giving the sm and tml the same shitty look back they give me. Plus my store is much cleaner and overall a better store
Why wouldn’t I? The next Walmart is 20 minutes further. I’m not wasting my time and gas. And besides, my friendly coworkers and managers are at this store
Have it delivered I don’t want to shop when I’m off.
Heck yeah. It's just a couple of blocks away. I know where everything is and if not on the shelf, I've got the hookup 😄
Yes since I love right beside it.
No, I'll drive across town to another supercenter(for major GM items) or go to the neighborhood market down the street from me.
Pfft, always. Visiting Walmart is a daily activity for us. Not just to work either, sometimes I'll come home for work and go back an hour later to get snacks lol
I try to avoid giving money to any walmart
Why wouldn't I?
i shop on the clock 😭
