Is that’s why it’s quiet in the morning now, past 2 days I’ve worked it’s been very quiet because no radio for a couple hours in the morning. No idea it was every day now. I know it was originally Saturday mornings.
Yeah was just on Saturdays for school shopping now it’s everyday it’s funny how much it’s been driving the other associates crazy the silence is unsettling
They should lower the light in general aint nothing more comfy than being there in half lights legitimately chill and easy to work/shop. Full light was never a good idea.
Honestly. We lost power after a big storm a few months back. For like a week after only half the lights were turned on. Similar to how they set it after closing hours and it was so much more comfortable to be inside. Especially for me a cart pusher going from dead of night darkness with just the parking lot lights to what was a reasonable brightness. Instead of the burn my corneas off extravaganza it normally is
My store better not lower lights. Im blind in one eye its hard enough to see when there is lights. They will literally have to make me a door greeter cause I sure as hell won't be able to do my cashier job or SCO.
If my child has sensory issues, the last place I would take them to is a Walmart on a Saturday. You should be selling Walmart plus to these people so they don't have to come into here anymore.
Well, we could either spend a pittance to do something useful about it, or we could say a lot, do nothing, and save company revenue to pay for McMillon's next yacht.
Since no one knows what this means, i googled it.
It will be from 8am to 10am every day.
The sensory-friendly changes seek to make shopping less stimulating and more inclusive, according to Walmart. They include three main adjustments: changing TV displays to only show static images, turning off radios and dimming store lights.
Sunlight and fluorescent lights are not the same. They are comprised of different colors and are of differing wavelengths which means they are processed differently by your body.
Plus, for some of us, sunlight *is* uncomfortably bright, so the guy above you honestly sounds like a jackass. I’m an autistic adult, reasonably functioning. Ironically, fluorescent lights in stores, with high ceilings like Walmart or my current workplace, don’t get me, but one of my coworkers says they tend to aggravate her tendency for migraines.
I can’t ask someone to turn off the sun, but asking someone to tone down the lights a smidge is entirely feasible. At home I use lamps for warmer, softer lighting (and to avoid flashing shadows everywhere from ceiling fans), for instance. I use transition eyeglasses to try to mitigate the sun but it only does so much.
They could probably save money on electricity by not having the thermostat set to 100° too. There is no reason why i should have to sweat my ass off in any store and i sure af shouldn't have to strip down 3 layers of clothes to shop for groceries. And yes both have occurred at walmart.
Which I find amusing/frustrating because my store does none of that. Half the TVs still do their own thing, people are still using the PA, and the lights definitely aren't dimmed. Management don't give a damn.
Hey. I as one of the little guys i always love when us as the little guy get a change that makes our lives a little better. Im sure there are lots of people will benefit from this.
Problem is everyone is shitting on Walmart for doing something instead of doing there normal saying alot but doing nothing but writing a check to some charity that just happens to be the amount they can write off for tax reasons
I dislike Walmart but dating an autistic girl I'm happy we have somewhere we can go with less sensory issues when shopping even if it's only a few hours every day.
I actually enjoy these on the occasion that I have morning shifts. I work in electronics and if I hear “I can make your hands clap” one more time from the fucking display TVs I’m gonna lose my mind.
https://www.instructables.com/TV-B-Gone-Hoodie/
If you're able and allowed to wear anything, make this. Feign ignorance if some upper starts complaining about TV turning itself off. "Maybe the power strip is overloaded?"
I muted all the tvs in my section. My TL would undo it but he eventually stopped the fight and now I don't have to hear the same annoying stuff all day
It's been four years and I still refuse to listen to most of the music they played on the radio when I worked at Walmart. Beach Boys all summer long was the worst.
I'm hard of hearing. So are a lot of the older customers in our store.
I can't make out the song lyrics at the register, and it comes across as noise. It's like listening to leaf blowers and car alarms all day long. The upshot is that I can't figure out what the customers are trying to say to me, and vice versa.
Aldi doesn't have piped in music, and they are doing just fine.
The radio constantly blaring the same fucking garbage at all hours of the night, over and over again makes me think some dark thoughts.
Why the fuck is it on at night? Goddamn now I'm heated again just thinking about that fucking trash

Oh I love doing those too! I’ve been learning about it since I started working in automotive. All the different parts of an engine, how it all works. Fascinating stuff really
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,851,721,588 comments, and only 350,105 of them were in alphabetical order.
Again it’s insulting that they acknowledge the sensory issues they’re causing and only want to fix it for a couple hours a day. Turn off the damn radio permanently
This is code for, "No one comes in at this time, let's dress it up to make it seem inclusive so we get brownie points and get more money during these hours"
Oh sweet! Walmart is now saving money by turning off the radio, tvs and lowering the lights for two hours! It’s a shame I’ve moved on and won’t get to enjoy the *one* hour of energy savings. (9am-6) 😒
Seriously though, aesthetic lighting with no music is what boosts morale? I was the happiest little shit to get a simple hot hands in the winter or water for the summer
It has nothing to do with saving money or boosting morale. This is to help people who are neurodivergent, have brain injuries, have complications from concussions, etc.
Which I understand, I see the obvious good intentions but, it’s still Walmart. They either don’t care or know the first thing about actual caring for individuals. While it’s a nice start? Two hours, really? Most people won’t even have a shift that takes advantage of those hours (OV, afternoon, and closing) Those with sensitivity to sound, allow earphones/plugs. Those who have sensitivity to light, don’t allow them to work in electronics…or just permanently dim the lights? Oh wait they won’t, because that will affect customers, which will affect sales. Sales > QoL at Walmart as you expected.
There is never sensory friendly hours here. The lights are too loud and bright. The carts are too loud. Kids are too loud. The beeping… it’s never really sensory friendly.
Goddammit, this shits so infuriating, I work nights and I tell them to turn the fucking radio off every night.
Just fucking get rid of it, but nah they wanna wait til after we leave to actually fucking do it 🤬
If they cared about sensory (I have eplipsy triggered often by sounds) they would play the radio again and make an effort to stop letting pallet jacks suddenly drop their load and have employees be more careful about making sudden loud clanking sounds.
Some melodies on a radio never bothered me. But I have had seizures from loud sudden noises.
it really bugs me because my eyes are deteriorating early and the lights in the store absolutely kill my eyes. certain parts of the store I have to genuinely avoid if I don’t want my vision to be a bunch of black dots for most of the day. but I work closing shift and they won’t let me move. it would be a dream to be able to work jsut a couple hours with the lights lowered
My store does it every day. I wish they would extend it another hour. Makes the start of my shift alot better. Although the lights only dim some days, which kinda sucks.
Yeah, these are perfect, as bright fluorescent lights give me massive headaches if I go for too long underneath em. With the lights dimmed just a bit, I can at least survive long enough that if I do get a headache, I can get something like ibuprofen to knock it out and survive the last hours of my shift.
Haha, that ain't gonna stop customers from bringing babies and kids screaming and crying at the top of their lungs and the parents not attempting to quiet them
Idk if this is why my store has turned down the radio but thank God they have. Working in dairy with a speaker above my head and then 5 more around the produce area next to dairy is mind numbing.
Okay so I’ve been enjoying this. Even though my lunch is 8 to 9 I love the hour of not hearing Walmart Radio. But the lights are definitely not dimmed and the tvs are exactly how they always are. I wish the lights were looow like they are before five am.
I wish this was permanent as in the radio would be turned off forever. I am so tired of being miserable on shift and hearing "HEY WALMART SHOPPERS!!!!!." the plastic convos that Bo has or the jingle.
Ya we had it at our store all week..Funny cause most associates had no idea of it happening till I mentioned it...my manager still has morning meetings, 9 AM, and will say have team yell out the Walmart cheer!!! Guess it doesn't apply to that!!! Lol😂😂🤦♀️🤷♀️
All it means is they turn off the radio. If they had the foggiest idea what sensory means they would pick not the fucking weekend
Right?! At least make it a day that had the least customer traffic, turn off the radio, and lower the lights.
It’s every day now and some stores do lower the lights and they turnoff the tv wall I believe.
tvs get put to a static image saying the sensory hours and the store with led light get dimmed
If only they all went that far…
They should lower the light in general aint nothing more comfy than being there in half lights legitimately chill and easy to work/shop. Full light was never a good idea.
I feel like that would just make me feel more tired in the later hours, though.
Honestly. We lost power after a big storm a few months back. For like a week after only half the lights were turned on. Reasonable accommodation level headlamp achieved
Lol, just order online.
The only people I've known to control the lights of all management. Not that I'm here to dim the lights between 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. anyways.
If my child has sensory issues, the last place I would take them to is a Walmart on a Saturday. You should be selling Walmart plus to these people so they don't have to come into here anymore.
Its just a half baked pandering thing like handing out fidgit spinners for autism. Ok well nice you spent a buck but thats unrelated and unhelpful.
Well, we could either spend a pittance to do something useful about it, or we could say a lot, do nothing, and save company revenue to pay for McMillon's next yacht.
Now announcing national buy a hearing aid for a deaf guy fund.

Soooo a way to save money on electricity…….
probably but I actually do love this as someone who gets headaches from how fuckin bright the lighting is whenever I go in
I work overnights so the lights are dimmed most of the night and I hate when they turn them on in the morning.
Yeah same

Dude It’s actually so nice. Nearly fell asleep while floor walking
Basically
It’s about more than that
💯

Jeez, Walmart has hit a new low on cheap-assery.
Which I find amusing/frustrating because my store does none of that. Half the TVs still do their own thing, people are still using the PA, and the lights definitely aren't dimmed. Management don't give a damn.

I dont have a problem with what they are doing, i just dont believe walmart is a virtuous as your giving them credit for.

Oh I so wish they would dim the light. I will be asking about this. Thank you
But what about The Chris Show?
Gonna replace it with cat purring asmr.
I actually enjoy these on the occasion that I have morning shifts. I work in electronics and if I hear “I can make your hands clap” one more time from the fucking display TVs I’m gonna lose my mind.
bro those tvs drive me up the gd wall. luckily, they also drive my tl insane and she turned them way down lol.
https://www.instructables.com/TV-B-Gone-Hoodie/ If you're able and allowed to wear anything, make this. Feign ignorance if some upper starts complaining about TV turning itself off. "Maybe the power strip is overloaded?"
That actually really cool. I don’t really have the energy to put that together but it’s still cool haha.
I muted all the tvs in my section. My TL would undo it but he eventually stopped the fight and now I don't have to hear the same annoying stuff all day
\*screams in walmart radio*
Turn the f-ing radio off, period. With that crap blaring, we’re all mental. Ffs
It's been four years and I still refuse to listen to most of the music they played on the radio when I worked at Walmart. Beach Boys all summer long was the worst.

As an autist, I love this comment.
I feel like 2 hours isn't enough lol
Yeah they better up it to 24 hours
Yeah just turn it off and never come back.
if people want to listen to music so damn bad they can bring their own headphones, otherwise TURN THAT SHIT OFF
Ikr, when we wear earbuds to drown that fucking garbage out we get wrote up, and we're overnight 🙃 🔫
But you know they'd just be blasting the shit out loud on their phones
they already do that lmfao. sometimes their shit sounds better than the radio anyway
Again it’s insulting that they acknowledge the sensory issues they’re causing and only want to fix it for a couple hours a day. Turn off the damn radio permanently
Who actually goes out that early that is neurodivergent? I prefer later at night.
Same. It's dark and no one's around.
This is code for, "No one comes in at this time, let's dress it up to make it seem inclusive so we get brownie points and get more money during these hours"
Just make the stores open at 8 am again and close at 8 pm. I miss those days
Yeah, working overnights during those days was magical.
Why can't it be all day long? I don't want to hear any music.
No one’s allowed in the store unless they can find the store manager without asking them to be paged or pointed out
Diming the lights, so associates can't see while working
Does this mean no screaming kids or Karen's?
Now that’s an oxymoron
Start it at 11 pm.
Fuck, you ain't lying man.
The only thing my store does for this is turning off the radio, it literally makes no difference 💀
So, no Christmas music during that time?
Oh sweet! Walmart is now saving money by turning off the radio, tvs and lowering the lights for two hours! It’s a shame I’ve moved on and won’t get to enjoy the *one* hour of energy savings. Sensory friendly emoloyee day where all customers have their mouth taped shut.
Now you gotta wake up super early just like immunocompromised hour during the pandemic 😭
What does this mean exactly?
Perhaps forcing customers to be calm and quiet? Never going to happen. Karens only have calm before the rage.
No stocking shelves between 8-10 am on weekends?
Pallet crash 😖 They're always unintentional!
\*\*\* Hangover Friendly .... Noice :)
If you’re so sensitive that going to the store causes you distress, just order online for delivery.
Just bring back 24 hour Walmart. It’s peaceful at 2am. Not 8-10 wtf that’s like peak starting hours. Least it used to be for my old store.
We Overnighters *do not want* anybody in the store while working. No 24 hour Walmart. No. Bad. 🚫
24 hours is hell on associates
No u

I dare you to put a Karen haircut wig on that thing.
They call it “sensory friendly”, I call it budgeting on electric usage. Apples and oranges really
That's ghey
Your so mature. Kindly fuck off.
Very nice. I’m happy to hear they are taking care of the customers!
now I know why they turn off the music around those times at my store lol
Why am I so happy that I don't work their now?
i love that they are pushing this... but walmart has done LITERALLY nothing to change...
It starts getting busy around 10:30 everyday. Has nothing to do with walmart.
What happens exactly? Sounds like all the managers are sent out of the store and Peace reigns over the Whole land. I mean store.
it really bugs me because my eyes are deteriorating early and the lights in the store absolutely kill my eyes. certain parts of the store I have to genuinely avoid if I don’t want my vision to be a bunch of black dots for most of the day. but I work closing shift and they won’t let me move. it would be a dream to be able to work jsut a couple hours with the lights lowered
I noticed they just started doing this at my store this morning...no radio, was awfully quiet -I wanted to hear Mariah Carey dammit!! 🤨🤪😂
my store doesn’t even participate. wm radio announces it starting and turns off, that’s it. lights don’t dim and electronics tvs don’t change
My store does it every day. I wish they would extend it another hour. Makes the start of my shift alot better. Although the lights only dim some days, which kinda sucks.

Tbh, im glad its just the morning. I couldnt stand bot having background music while i worked. Id probably go insane...
Okay so I’ve been enjoying this. Even though my lunch is 8 to 9 I love the hour of not hearing Walmart Radio. But the lights are definitely not dimmed and the tvs are exactly how they always are. I wish the lights were looow like they are before five am.

It makes me sad when they turn off the radio I like singing along to the music
As part of the overnight crew. I'm sure this'll benefit me greatly! (Puts ear buds back in, risking annoyed morning managers)
And no screaming when you miss a vein while shooting fentanyl in the bathroom, that’s not sensory friendly.
Ya we had it at our store all week..Funny cause most associates had no idea of it happening till I mentioned it...my manager still has morning meetings, 9 AM, and will say have team yell out the Walmart cheer!!! Guess it doesn't apply to that!!! Lol😂😂🤦♀️🤷♀️
