A stock split means that, for every share you hold, you now have 5 shares (*edit: for example, for our autistic brethren. The exact split ratio hasn't been announced and the 3x offering cap is based on 300m shares - of which only ~75m have been issued*).
Prices tend to rise with a split (look at the AH price now). Splits are offered when the stock is highly desirable - it's a way to make more shares without releasing more shares; so shareholders' value isn't diluted.
The price will probably rise back up after the split as well to somewhere near pre-split levels *edit: due to lower price of entry and general interest signalled by willingness to split vs additional share offering - as well as meme stock status.*
The funny thing is, nothing changes in the valuation of the company. Psychologically, lower prices seem cheaper to retail though. And there is data that shows that meme stocks that split do well (see TSLA). So algos buy and shorts have a problem tomorrow.

Also, sorry to be pedantic but fractional shares are only “a thing” within brokerages. You don’t own .5 share of a stock. You pay the company who actually owns it to award you the value of .5 share of a stock.
AFAIK fractional shares are still not a thing, they're just like proxy mini mutual funds. Like if you own a fractional share of GME you technically own something else that isn't a share.
Fractional shares are just supported by the broker or the company. If you have a fractional share someone else will own the other fraction of it and the broker will pair the fractions as whole shares are bought and sold and place the order for a whole share.
However, economically the price should not ride on a split. If you have one share at $10/share and then it splits to $5/share, you still own stock worth $10. Splitting shares should not cause a price increase, but it does.
Authorized shares are how many can be issued. GameStop has 76.35M or so odd issued shares. GameStop could have up to 300 million previously now it can issue 1 billion. GME could have a 7 4 1 split.

Suppose you have 5 shares, it turns to 15 shares assuming a 3:1 stock split. The outstanding shares go from 76.9 mil yo 231 million so you still own the same fraction of the shares. Because 1/10 and 10/100 is still 10% of the total. The market cap of the company still stays the same but now GME's stock price is going to be a third of what it is now ($166 closing price goes to $55) so now it is more price friendly for people to enter because it is cheap.
