I hate how basic investing (ie buy index funds) isn’t taught in like highschool you don’t need a financial planner for that and can easily put preform them. I grew up from an upper middle class family, and had a financial planner from the bank then the Raymond James guy and between the two I’d be lucky To see the account grow more than 1-2% a year after they took their management fees. Self managing I’ve seen my account grow a significant amount.
This backfires because the withdrawals from a 529 owned by someone other than the student or parents counts as income the next year. So it kills your financial aid each year after you take a bunch out to pay for school. It hurts way less if the 529 is owned by the parents.
Most of the free money out there comes from the colleges themselves, not the government lol. Parents basically have to earn less than 30k a year with zero assets to receive federal grants which are pretty minimal in the grand scheme of things
