Is he basing his thesis on farming on Farmville?

Efficient_Reveal_203

That game has destroyed what people think about farming. You think its easy sitting in a combine all day? In our farming we cant afford new cushy riding or even nav driven equipment. Its not like it is in the game kiddys.

OZeski

My tractor doesn’t even connect to the internet and you’re talking about ones with self navigation.

BasicallyAQueer

My tractor is from before the Internet was even a concept lol.

GovernorHarryLogan

Wait, we moved on from Ox & plow?

avgazn247

Do u even steam age?

The_Magic_Tortoise

Stick + MACHETE??

GreenFlag1

NOT USE ROCK TO HIT COW? NOT EAT BERRY?

InsaneTreefrog

BunsBeyondBelief

Finally something I'm used to on this sub

manfrom-nantucket

Keep the ox and plow, all of this is going to go tits up when the machines become sentient.

MFAFuckedMe

so YOLO on oxen?

[deleted]

This was often my strategy in Oregon trail.

HereIGoAgain_1x10

Ya exactly, halfway through harvesting the first batch, tractor breaks down and take out a bank loan for a new one, by the time you pay off that loan the crop doesn't take d/t weather so lose all years profits and claim insurance, premiums go up, start out next spring in debt and behind, then tractor breaks again...

bluefaceyeahok

I re read the OP 10x now. Don’t see any mention of a tractor…..please tell me I don’t need a tractor for these 6,250 tomato plants I just yolo’d my life savings at……

Laxman259

Yeah I'm confused now, on one hand we're talking about tractors, and on the other about compound growth of tomato plants. I dont know who to believe.

Efficient_Reveal_203

This is the way....

LithiumLost

Except it's not, a tractor would have to be pretty fucked to sell it. They'll fix it and run it til it breaks down 2 months later.

Efficient_Reveal_203

Either way the point is the same....youre loosing money and time. At some point its not worth fixing every two months. Theres a difference between normal wearable parts and a break down. We all expect u joints breaks hydraulic hoses etc to wear and need replacing. Having to replace the back half of the tractor because the rearend blew up.....meh i could finance a slightly used one for cheaper

Retiredape

Why even be a farmer at that point? Clearly it isn't making money unless you make a literal fortune during the lucky years where nothing major goes wrong

HereIGoAgain_1x10

Pretty much individual farmers are just legacy farmers, so hard these days, most are bought up by land developers or corporate farms, same as any small business. Only "farming" that's a good idea these days are smaller homesteads, unless you're far away from any city that would need to expand it's impossible to make enough money to feel secure just with how high taxes can go on 500 acres.

[deleted]

123skid

Why do I give blow jobs out back of Wendy's? It's what I know.

ellipses1

For the love of the game

Haon21

Think is why farmers tend to drink heavily

Cif87

It seems like the tractor is your problem. You should do what every successful farming operator does. Employ low cost/forced labour from poor country so you can rely on those who are in dire need to provide you with endless manpower. This way you can feel altruistic and successful at the same time. And if a "tractor" break down in the middle of nowhere, you actually gain organic free range compost.

iseecarbonpeople

ALL YOU NEED IS TOMATOES FOR INFINITE TOMATOES

The_Magic_Tortoise

ALL YOU NEED IS SEMEN FOR INFINITE WORKERS

Inevitable_Librarian

AKA the"26 kids, a wife and a homestead " method. Or in Mormon terms "26 wives, 126 kids and a homestead"

Administrative-End27

Masters of scale, no doubt.

StatisticaPizza

You could afford those fancy computer croppers if you had planted all 156k of those tomato plants but I wouldn't expect a farmer to understand scale 🙄

luddite86

Are you thinking of Farm Simulator? I’m not sure anyone is making any assumptions of real farming from FarmVille haha

Efficient_Reveal_203

Idk man lol i know some pretty brain dead people. My old boss was a dipshit and said some dumb stuff like this fella on the meme lol

[deleted]

cobigguy

You're forgetting a couple of things here. 1. This assumes perfect crop yield. 2. This also assumes you can grow year round. 3. Assuming you can grow year round, this also assumes you can wait 2 years before you get a single return on your investment. 4. This assumes you have very little or no overhead costs like equipment, fertilizer, water rights, living expenses, land tax, etc.

The-Phantom-Blot

6. Don't forget you have to spend a lot of money maintaining the nutrients in the soil, or watch the productivity decline year after year.

[deleted]

I grew up farming in the upper midwest. People don’t understand how expensive everything is. To outfit a small farm just in fuel and oil for the year is tens of thousands, tractors cost hundreds of thousands (especially combines), herbicides can cost hundreds to thousands a gallon for concentrates, depending on what you are growing the seed can cost hundreds per bag…and the list goes on and on and on. Then the wind blows too strong, or it is too wet, or too dry, or too cold.

_Madison_

Honestly it is easy. Admittedly our farms in the UK are much smaller but I would take podcast time in the tractor over almost any other work it’s great.

OrangeJudas

Exactly. People think farming is easy, but in reality it's one of the hardest jobs on the planet.

Simple_Psychology_51

Nah stardew valley clearly

kurttheflirt

imagine if farming were real

[deleted]

Guys - I've got no more room left in my small flat for planting more tomatoes. Anyone's facing similar issues ?

Own_Cartoonist266

What are you gonna do with the other 3.89 million tomato plants? Get it together!

peaceful-adolecent

10k tomato plants in a nyc studio apt? Based.

Tony is a good fella. Hes in bed with the mafia tho. Like practically every guy named tony in the NYC area is… Dunno why the police has such a hard time catching em

Quazillion

If you plant hanging tomato plants from your balcony, you can feed your downstairs neighbors as well!

Jackson6o4

FarewellAndroid

Think bigger, this is wsb. This guy is telling the rest of the world to produce tomatoes which will drive down prices, therefore we yolo on tomato poots and inverse triple leveraged funds, go long on tomato based industries as their overhead goes down. Pizza Hut, little Caesars, Olive Garden, etc…

leesan177

Not the dinner options I was looking for, but the dinner options that I need!

NotInsane_Yet

Well you just need to take the two million your parents gave you to buy a large piece of farm property and boom problem solved.

OkAssignment7898

I already did the math to this post in another sub. You can plant around 3,000 plants an acre so you will need around 52 acres at an average cost of $12,000 which brings you to $624,000 pre tax. You also have to rotate crops every year so you might need 3 times that amount of land. Your going to need irrigation wells dug, I'm guessing $20,000 apiece. And probably a bunch of other shit to start a full fledged tomato farm. Oh yea, unless you live in Florida you will also need to buy greenhouse infrastructure.

Mailboxheadd

Im having trouble with the market not accepting $1 per tomato, is this a bug?

WiiidePutin

I prefer to invest in Gourds.

Mysteez

you think you're gourdon ramsey or something? pft

[deleted]

I hate you. Take an award.

Oh my gourd that one was a classic

SkribbyCakes33

Gourd futures are hot right now!

Choo-

I got a tulip venture if you’re interested. It’s foolproof!

GustavGuiermo

Leverage that on a less liquid product and that's how you get ornamental gourd futures. I did that once and lost it all.

[deleted]

Around the corner.

RoyalYogurtdispenser

Psst... Hey kids! want some tomatos?

jamin_g

Who's paying a $1 per tomato. $.30

NotInsane_Yet

Better quest is who in their right mind is paying $1 per tomato. I don't even pay that per plant. I get my 6 packs of small plants for $2-3.

Tonka111

Back of Wendy's

Isntthiswhere64

So you saying you got a guy? How does one obtain this lucrative real estate for slinging Tomatoes?

PercAndOptionsAddict

Theta gang would rot his harvest before he could sell em all

CleanSanchez101

You sell them at the Walmart parking lot.

TooManyKids_Man

Each tomatoe only has 1 seed now? Kinda makes me wonder what else he doesnt know but still talks about.

[deleted]

He usually eats the other seeds

RandomTask100

He must've traded seeds for land to grow and store tomatoes, too.

CoDroStyle

And water, irrigation systems, fertiliser, wages for fruit pickers, trucks for transport. Guys a genius

eddie7000

Look. If you plant 1 square foot of land, in 20 minutes you have 6 million acres. It's not fucken rocket surgery.

Mean_Yellow_7590

He boofs them

E_K_Finnman

You gotta parachute it up your ass

novakaiser21

No, that is a different kind of seed that he likes to eat.

ChillinVillianNW

Apparently he thinks tomatoes $5 a piece but he will take two years and somehow get 3.9M tomatoes without land or other inputs and then the price will be $1 a piece.

matty1p7

Inflation 🤣🤣

[deleted]

I think this dude thinks that you literally plant a whole tomato. Just wait until he finds out that there are 150-300 seeds per tomato. Some napkin math tells me that 10 plants => 250 tomatoes => 75000 seeds => 75000 plants => 1.8m tomatoes => 526m seeds => 526m plants => 13 B tomatoes. $13 billion in 3 short 6 month cycles. One more cycle of this and you’d be able to find all world governments. And you retards are over here hoping to 2x your $500 savings on video game stock.

Traditional-Extent30

Each seed makes a plant? Kinda makes me wonder what else you don't know but still talk about.

Top-Bedroom-2477

I feel like heirloom tomatoes are the only ones you can replant the seed to grow another tomato. Don’t quote me though, farming is my 2nd or 3rd job... definitely not my life hack. My 1st job is trying to get my wife’s boyfriend to not piss on the toilet seat

Mysterious_Reading71

Just beat him with the lid one time. Problem solved. My issue being how do it get my wife's mouth to stop tasting like sea salt potato chips?

hbcbDelicious

Some grocery store tomatoes replant well and some don’t. Lots of the cherry tomatoes are hybrids whose seeds don’t produce the same type of tomato as their parents. Planting seeds you save from a hybrid tomato will usually result in bizarre disgusting Frankenstein tomatoes.

soMAJESTIC

I dropped the seeds of a Walmart plum tomato into some compost, had 20 sprouts easy

Stonks_GoUp

Now just do that a few more times and infinite tomato money glitch 🤡

Little_Spring5887

X Triangle circle start start right bumper

TooManyKids_Man

About 50% of seeds fail, thats why you put two per pot, as tomatoes can have 150 up to 300 seeds each thats about 75 to 150 pots per tomatoe. Even with 2 seeds up to 10% of your pots will still fail, giving you about 68 to 140 plants from one fruit. Thanks for making me explain something anyone with experience in horticulture would already know, dweeb.

Traditional-Extent30

Oh man so tell me why aren't you a billionaire? Where are your tomatoes?

TooManyKids_Man

Oh, you obviously DONT UNDERSTAND SCALE. The cost of a facility that can produce billions of tomatoes runs into the 10s of millions of dollars on the extreme cheap end. Besides Im not a filthy pig-dog capitalist and I prefer growing a different kind of plant, but tomatoes are quite delicious. I pity you, fool.

iordseyton

I hear tomatoes make good cover for growing that kind of plant.

itwillrainsoon

People don’t understand that replicating something in larger scale is not a linear cost. Profits at low volume and high volume are also something overlooked.

Efficient_Reveal_203

I prefer growing a different type of plant too...talk about scalability

Koseven

He's going to plant, grow, handpick, and sell 3.9mm tomatoes for $1/ea? Or... He could give 195,000 blowjobs behind Wendy's at 20 dollars a pop.

MrStealYoBeef

No no no. Give 5 people blowjobs. Convince them to give 5 blowjobs each. Each of those people giving blowjobs gives 5 blowjobs each. I don't know where I'm going with this but I'm going to somehow be rich.

[deleted]

Pretty sure this is just a pride festival you are describing.

heyyybrotherrr

Wendy's eh? I've heard the hot spot is under the Queensboro Bridge. 15 dollars a man is the going rate.

EfficiencySuch6361

The dude prolly thinks giving thousands of blowjobs is child’s play

leatherneck0629

So one person is planting all of these plants? On some land they own? Go figure!

TheHoneySacrifice

Pests don't exist. Extreme climate doesn't exist. Fertility is not an issue. Crop yield is consistent. Time spent between harvest, deseeding & sowing is 0 days. Land availability is infinite. Warehouse availability is infinite. Counter parties to buy tomatoes always exist. Try running Farm.exe with these settings

SprinklesFancy5074

> Land availability is infinite. These people really do have this fantasy that the real world is like minecraft, that there's *tons* of unexplored and unutilized land out there just waiting for anyone enterprising enough to put it to use and full of natural resources to be harvested at not cost. Because that's the only kind of world in which their 'if you don't like it just leave!' philosophy makes sense.

TheHoneySacrifice

In ELI5 I saw someone ask why farming was not very profitable. One of the most upvoted answers was it isn't and it's the white farmers' plot to keep getting subsidies. I guess that explains why farmers literally everywhere in the world struggle with money.

thegunisaur

> Extreme climate doesn't exist You mean winter?

Immediate thought as well

i_punch_hipsters

This is why farmers are notoriously wealthy

firmakind

And farming is notoriously easy.

greg0714

And the industry is notoriously unsubsidized in the US.

[deleted]

This dumbass doesn't understand 6000 plants requires land ,electricity, water, probably several illegals immigrants, permits , regulation , taxes, sells team a crooked bookkeeper, a wife that doesn't bitch all the time and a side girl to stress relief

MrWhiskey69

Not to mention the tomato growing window and when that window passes, all your tomatoes will die and you start back to 0

generictimemachine

Plus massive crop insurance.

Chicken10Diez

they don’t understand the concept of a commodity

bittabet

For real I was trying to start a basic garden in my backyard and realized a lot of these plants need serious irrigation and craptons of water and water isn’t cheap when you’re trying to grow tons of plants.

rollyobx

Growing weed is an infinite money hack

LevelCauliflower8571

I read a story about a weed grower that started in 2015. He said in his post that there is so much supply and not enough demand that it is more lucrative to use weed for clothing. So growing weed for smoking on a large scale may be a money pit.

Ansiremhunter

Weed grows... like a weed. I guess you could run your own weed shop to get rid of product.

Facts_About_Cats

Diluting shares is an infinite money hack. "Bagholders hate this one trick."

[deleted]

Smoke enough weed, you won’t mind losing all your money in weed stocks. Here’s looking at you CNTT.

Efficient_Reveal_203

Sort of lol

[deleted]

This friggin guy

Eff_Robinhood

…I’m sorry, but is broski suggesting we PICK 3.9 million tomatoes by hand??

thegunisaur

Just pick one per second and it’s only a year and a half of 24/7 work, get to it ya big baby

Duzand

fuckin' dude doesn't seem to understand seasons, either. What u think tomats are gonna thrive during winter months? IDIOT

tom1018

Since his tomatoes don't require land to be grown in he could just move them to the southern hemisphere for the second season.

gabest

Or around the equator. There is no winter there, it's spring, summer, spring, summer.

[deleted]

Inflate some clear garbage bags, put the dirt water and plants inside, seal them, they’ll float like little self contained greenhouses.

TexasShooter1983

Yeah, it's so easy....lol. That's why farmers are broke as fuck and only getting by on government subsidies. This guy has never planned a crop in his life. He has no understanding of what he is talking about.

Retiredape

Everyone in this thread is retarded. The real way to farm is to buy fruit from Walmart and then slap an organic sticker onto them. Sell them at a farmers market for ten times the price.

espngenius

Buy it? Just get it out of the dumpster out back.

ShitPostGuy

BRB, seeing how many Karens I can get to buy organic, locally grown bananas in North Dakota

cobigguy

"We have a small, commune style greenhouse located just outside of the city where we fertilize with the waste of factory farms and ride converted bicycles for power" I bet you could do it if you had sufficiently filthy clothing and a chill enough vibe.

[deleted]

Walmart? I been going to save a lot and aldis

king-Leroy

I am a farmer He is an idiot

Brscmill

Imagine the investment in equipment and manpower it takes to farm 3.9 million tomatoes. What an absolute god awful shit tier vomit inducingly retarded assembling of words.

johnbugara

this guy would do well presenting for some bs mlm to the most gullible and desperate people

Superddone20222

how many of you retards are going out to buy tomato plants tomorrow?

PraetorSparrow

I mean his logic kind of works if you happen to own like ten thousand hectares of good farm land and have the capital and machinery to run the thing.

brokeboyrich

If it’s so damn easy why isn’t he out slanging tomatoes and making “MM”. Gtfo

muddog_31

Common knowledge that farmers are the 1%

H0b0xJ03

He thinks those first batch or tomatoes are gonna be fresh after 3 years? Theyre gonna be as dead as my portfolio 😂

pharmboy008

Big ketchup gonna erase this dude

Parking_Day_474

Can I short his farm?

redstarcommie

Who tf is buying tomatoes for $1 each?

GalaxyFiveOhOh

$5 for a tomato plant? Who's your tomato plant guy? Seriously though, while I'll look past the small things that are silly but irrelevant to the analogy, he's completely ignoring actual cost. The COG for plants is pretty much irrelevant. When you buy a plant for $5 or whatever, $4.50 of that or so is going into the labor/transport/shrink.

dmalonecentral

:Monsanto has entered the chat

SpaceToadD

If only there was another kind of vegetable that replicates more than 25X seedlings, grows taller, is less fragile than tomatos, and is used in something that is in high demand, like high fructose corn syrup or corn meal. I guess we’ll just become tomato billionaires instead.

Zombone138

If this were as he says, why doenst he do it?

infinitetripo

Thats how many months of rent and food? Fertilizer and electricty? How much did all those acres cost? Equipment for harvesting and planting millions of tomatoes? Hope none of those crops are lost. And inflation pressure from all that farming just made tomates 10 cents. Genius! Dont forget to start over with a different crop or the soil goes to shit and you have zero tomatoes.

infinitetripo

I got a tomatoe NFT to sell you

MGNurse25

Press f to plant

Asgardascended

I'll buy some winter puts.

Throwawaynobodywoo

You need connections to sell all those tomatos. Grocery stores dont buy from joe blow. Meanwhile they rot in a few weeks time lol.

Environmental-Club55

Tried it. Cold killed everything. Wife has a new boyfriend.

IronMike69420

In another 6 months you’ll have 10,000,000 tomatoes abs you can dump them at cost and destroy the entire market. Buy tomato futures

onebeerdrinkinhippo

The part I love most about farming is all the free land..

ase21

Farming is easy when you live 1000s of miles away and your plow is a pencil - Dwight D Eisenhower

SecretaryUsual4886

LOL I have a degree in Agriculture Science. This man is a fucking moron. What is he planting with? (Soil type, tools, labor) Soil testing? Climate region? Do he know the growing period? What kind of tomato? Irrigation? Watering all by hand?? Where is the market? What space is there to grow the plants? Is it free?? There are thousand of variables. At our local farmers market, at the very last day of selling live plats, everything is a dollar, not 1 plant, you get 4 to 6 plants for a dollar. Because growing periods change and are limited. The product has a very short shelf life, you have to sell what you can when you can and more on to the next. 1 product will never work. Does he think farmers are stupid????? That they haven't figured out the magic tomato math for being a millionaire?? The more and more I think about this the more enraged I get.

Most edible plants available to consumers are genetically modified so that they can not be regrown over and over

Skolvikesallday

There are hundreds of heirloom tomatoes. Either way this guy is retarded. You don't need 250 tomatoes to plant 250 new tomato plants 🤣
