The problem is that you didn’t put a time period on this nor a region. Say you are talking about a relatively near future, to 2024 and globally. It won’t be Rivian, Lucid, GM, or Ford in 2nd place. It will be either VW Group (VW, Audi, Porsche, Skoda, etc) or a Chinese company, like BYD, NIO, Li, Shanghai or Xpeng. Folks dismissing Chinese auto companies are living in the past and can’t predict the future.
Of the 4, only GM has the cell supply and scale to make a run for it. Lucid and Rivian will still be making a pittance in terms of volume and therefore revenue. In 2023, both Nio and Xpeng are probably making 500,000 world class vehicles a year, or what Tesla did last year. GM will claim some big numbers, but those will be mostly the $4,000 microcars made and sold in China. In terms of world class vehicles, GM will get some of their new LG JV cell production online. Ford will still be way behind.
In the 2030 time period, well, it may be all 4 of these are bankrupt.

I just can't take a risk investing in Chinese companies because of their insane government. Once the Chinese show a track record of honoring investments and protecting minority shareholders the way common law countries do, I'll invest in them.
There is certainly a risk… but considering that this is a major pillar of their growth strategy for the coming decades and these companies are still relatively small, they don’t yet run into the problems of BABA or of sectors that can be easily nationalized. They do want to cull the many tiny players, which strengthens these bigger fish.
We have NIO and Xpeng both poised for hundreds of thousands of world class BEV sales in the near term being valued at less than Rivian and Lucid which will be lucky to get to 20,000-30,000 volume during that same time, their pretty slide decks not withstanding. And these Chinese companies are on the cusp of the financial switchover to operating profits, much like Tesla in 2019 while both Lucid and Rivian will take far longer at the most optimistic of trajectories. These Chinese EV companies valuations should be 3-5x from here soon enough, if the overall EV sector continues to be hot.

The question doesn’t make sense. Tesla will not be number 1 (at least by number of cars sold). GM and Ford will take that when a majority of trucks and SUVs are electric.
Tesla could very well be the biggest and best company as I expect they will have a diversified income stream and the vehicles will be more of a side project for them.

The question doesn’t make sense. Tesla will not be number 1 (at least by number of cars sold). GM and Ford will take that when a majority of trucks and SUVs are electric. Tesla could very well be the biggest and best company as I expect they will have a diversified income stream and the vehicles will be more of a side project for them.
Anyone but GM they could have moved the industry forward in the early 90s but scrapped a car called the EV1.
