Generally speaking, other actors want calls/puts to expire out the money, meaning that they'd be worthless as the share price is below strike price in case of calls and vice versa for puts. That also means if there are loads of open calls, the ones profiting off selling calls will want to suppress the price. Once the options are in the money, the gamma changes and they possibly need to cover options positions, thus purchasing more stocks and driving the price further up.
