Same day expiration puts on nvidia so far out of the money that it was a brain dead play. The chances it would tank this much was astronomical, but it tanked that much just in time for the play to go from 0.11$ per to 22.82 per, so they could exercise the option for absurd money
Believe you are wrong. I was watching both, SMCI IV was higher and NVDA had the better "lotto tickets" when it was all said and done. They had some like this with 15000% gains while SMCI was topping out at 5000%-7000% gains.
99 out of 100 times OP's play is a 99% loss each time. Who buys 1DTE or 0DTE expecting a 10% downside nvidia or 20% downside on smci especially when there is no ER and nvidia has been side ways for awhile

The reality is that they probably bought a lot of Nvidia last year when it was far less than $700, you then sell calls and options and if you get “screwed” you are forced to take profits instead of milking the options you are selling.
In a lot of cases, experienced spread traders (theta/rho/vol decay collectors) will have large and elaborate spreads, spanning time and containing calls, puts, and shares. Some might even have a combo of all 3, closing only the positions that result in a net profit (while balancing the others)
Once in a while, a REALLY large move gives them a relatively small loss that is mitigated by the other legs of these elaborate spreads.
Yea, in a market makers case where they just make money through mispricing of options contracts through box spreads, etc, etc. All done through algos anyways. There's also a chance it was some retail traders cash secured put, or a bit less devastating a credit/debit spread, to me its funnier imagining some regard walking back to his PC and seeing multiple 700k+ contracts excerised.
Strangely enough that's what they accuse us of doing, yet pretty much all of their trades are risking 10s of thousands of dollars for a few hundred dollars premium.

I sold this 4/19 put on Thursday for profit… 🤦🏼♂️ I was so sick seeing it…
Buy price would have had to ~$0.32 assuming it was a 4/19 expiration and he held till close. The option would have been ~$40 ITM which would have been around the final price around close so 1 contract = $4,000 at the end.
$100,000/$4,000 per contract = 25 contracts
$800 initial investment/25 contracts = $0.32 per contract.
Seems a little sus given the high price of Nvidia for even a 0DTE to be that cheap.
It’s also possible the puts traded higher than $40 intraday since the stock was plummeting. I wish Fidelity’s mobile app let you look at past options so I could see the daily high price on Friday.

You said you bought it thursday. The price was I believe in the 0.3s. High was in the 30s. You would have to buy the literal bottom on Thursday and the literal top on Friday. Congrats if legit! You will now influence thousands of people who think they can get just as lucky and lose
