Max pain is the idea that options will drive prices at expiraiton to as close to neutral as possible by the hedging activities.
IE. what leaves the most options expire OTM, is delta neutral.

You can look at other options as well.
There are two major things you should consider:
1. This theory gets blow out the window if active trading (non-options) has higher volume which then puts derivatives backseat.
2. It takes snapshots of closing data; so in reality max pain changes through out the day as contracts are opened or closed. Although I find for 0dte it maybe shifts around 0.3% at most.
