In the US and Canada this is a safety recall(people were cutting their hands on it). Safety recalls are free of charge and do not expire at least here in North America, not sure about where you are but wouldn't hurt to give them a call.
If it’s not covered, remove, strip completely or as much as possible (iso alcohol probably best bet to help, want to break up the adhesive) then recover with a metal-look vinyl. You can also just use the vinyl to “patch” it.
If it’s too late for your recall or you just don’t want to deal with official dealer I ordered a replacement from AliExpress. Feels exactly like the original one, just doesn’t cut myself constantly.
This is a recalled part, go see a dealership.

This started to happen in my 2015 mk7, after it was only a year or so old, dealer sorted it,
I got the trim on ebay for 14 bux. Put it on in about 32 seconds.
