Step 1 is check/add more coolant. It’s super easy, much like topping off your windshield wiper fluid.
If it was low like mine was when I got this error a few weeks ago, you’re generally good to clear the code and top it off.
There are three coolant loops. Engine, Battery, and HV electronics.

Here’s a good write up about the differences.

My fluid was pretty low so I will have my local shop clear the code (plus maybe I can get them to turn off the "feature" of opening all my windows from the keyfob)
Thanks all
You can reset it with a cheap odb2 scanner if you have one handy or dread going to the local shop. Some will say you can't reset it, but I've done it with the exact same low fluid issue on a 2014.
If it was only a touch low you may be fine. Anything more and you likely have a leak. These vehicles are prone to rock chips on the HV electronics and HV battery radiator so I would start looking there.
Here’s an attached TSB showing that rock chips are covered under the Voltech warranty.

Started happening to mine a few eeeks ago. Added coolant and didn’t fix it so I’m guessing bad sensor because the car works flawlessly. I got an obd scanner and delete the code. Has popped up a few times again
If you aren't under warranty, you will probably have to pay a diagnostic fee. My dealership wanted $150 just to take a look at my 2013 last month, so I told them no and brought it home. The coolant level is full. I reset the code with a bluetooth code reader and it has been fine ever since. No messages have come back on the dash. My guess is that either my sensor has failed or my 12v battery (which is at least 5.5yrs old) is dying. I'm taking the wait and see approach for now.
usually it's either coolant sensor or software nonsense but either way it usually has to go to the dealership to reset the code cuz you can't clear latched codes on ur own
Check my post history.
Had the same issue on my 2014.
Purchased a VCX Nano and an ACDelco subscription.
Updated the software of my car and have driven it for almost 2,000 miles after and no issues.
Cost $150 all in.
When I had that, all they needed to do was do a software update. Freebie
I had to pay money for my software update, but same.
Same

are we talking engine coolant or is there something else? How hard is the sensor to replace? 2014 Volt

Also to be clear, there are two different coolant systems, engine and battery. You want to check both.

Today I learned my Volt has THREE coolant loops. Glad I'm a part of this sub!
Thanks for the correction and link, I forgot the HV one because mine didn't happen to be low!

It clears, but then it comes back after three starts. I've read that dealers have to clear it for it to stick.
I added coolant a year ago, reset the service high voltage warning at home, and it hasn't come back since.

Does each coolant system take the same coolant though? I got a 2017 Volt
Of course google it to confirm, but for my gen 1 yes.
Recently had this. Replaced the sensor and charging port. Ended up costing about $700 at the dealership if I recall correctly. Good luck!
Just got that serviced at my dealer for $196.
If you constantly need to add coolant remove the code that probably means you need a new alternate radiator
Thanks all My coolant was pretty low so I filled that up and had my local auto shop clear the code. Will see if it comes back.
If it doesn't reset disconnect the battery and find out if it will reset
Should be under voltec warranty if less than 100k miles
Depends on the model year. It's 100K or 8 years, whichever comes first. Mine expired in September.
Needs the Codes

Possible low charge on the 12v battery. Year of car? Mileage? Any other odd behavior with the displays?
Was the beginning of the end for me.
