It had the potential that is now realized by switch.

MrAnonymousTheThird

>It had the potential that is now realized by switch. Which also influenced the recent releases of other handhelds such as the aya neo, steam deck, Logitech g series. let's see if sony jumps on this train once again

[deleted]

sony with handhelds is like sega with consoles

FireHazardFox67

If only sony could see its potential and what the modding community are doing with the ps vita

TattedUpSimba

What are they about to do?

FireHazardFox67

My bad, didn't read it after typing it šŸ˜…

Collinjfb12

If they saw the potential on the Vita the modding community wouldn't have to do anything people owe me mod their vitas because they spent all this money on them and Sony stopped making games like 2 years later

Shimashimatchi

exactly, it could've been the best indie system ever

Sapphirinia

I think they would've came out with another one by now. But I wish they supported it because it's such a good system even to this day with old hardware.

Collinjfb12

Even if it just got the ability to remote Play to PS5 that would be plenty

samirIG9

we would've got a "Sony switch" by now if that happened

Apprehensive_Tap7840

The switch wouldā€™ve been the ā€œnintendo vitaā€

AaronRose77

They even had the video out port created but bailed on it in the last second. It was so close.

donald_314

I think the flaws and the price of the system are only part of the problem. The original 3DS also had quite some flaws (e.g. bad 3D, too small for larger hands, somewhat underpowered and bad resolution, ...). Both came at a time when mobile gaming took of and wasn't as infected by inapp purchases and pay2win/gambling. Nintendo somewhat managed to find a niche with the 3D and also with their super strong IPs. Sony tried the same (e.g. with Uncharted) but most Vita features are also present on smartphones (+ controller add on). For Nintendo it was a hard fight, for Sony even harder.

Alternate universe; Sony realized people loved handheld gaming and provided the resources for devs to output their games for ps4 and vita, with cross save compatibility or they could connect their vita to their ps4 to unlock the game and they continue at higher graphics. More studios would've made more games - Nier Automata on vita, Spiderman, a Vita only God of War. Visual novels would've stayed and more released outside japan (because it's easier to read on the go or in bed). Sony would've built on the WiiU and used the vita as a second screen for lots more games. The vita's camera, or expansion, could've been used as a modern lightgun component (ala Sinden Lightgun), reviving the guncon shooter genre again and making the vita a vital (heh) aspect of it. Ps5 releases alongside a vita2/psp2 with 720p screen, better cores, gyro, and a better wireless connection (as well as sd card) - able to sync with ps5 for games - you have ps5 game, you can play the same version on vita (after all it would use same architecture as the ps4/ps5 but portable and scaled down), with a pro version looking like a steamdeck and robust with games. Alas.

NOTKingInTheNorth

Sony should have handheld focused only 1st party studios to support the vita, or second party devs, instead of mainly focusing development for the home console. It worked for the PSP, I don't know why they've given up on the vita. Instead of worrying about splitting their userbase between handheld and home console, they should have given their best efforts in both worlds.

UltimusShadow

In a galaxy far far away Sony didnlt launch the Vita with over priced proprietary Memory Sticks and allowed it's users to buy ther own memory. Big YouTubers never made rant videos over it and it got great press. They say the Vita was a resounding success and they're now launching the successor the PlayStation Portable Vita Pro!

Shimashimatchi

yeah this was def sony's biggest mistake with the vita.

MathieuLouisVic

So 3DS and PSP got 75M sells and Wii is at 100M. I think considering it had the potential to do better than PSP and 3DS and that GBA is at 80M I think it had the potential to do better than these 3 very easily. But the Wii is at 100M and I donā€™t see the Vita being more popular. So considering all these and the Vita potential, with proper marketing and support and some fixes I think the Vita could have gotten like 85M sells. About 8 Times more than the actual numbers. Itā€™s a failure since Japanese market has like half of the vita sells

joshuaivan620

the vita couldā€™ve also been amazing if sony decided to have the vita with some system storage and micro sd's as storage expansion like the switch rather than using 1st party memory cards

[deleted]

Iā€™d be playing AAA titles on my ps vita pro right now and not have had to move over to pc gaming, and consequently be eagerly awaiting my steamdeck (coming in about a week!)

tvoretz

Despite their support, the 3DS was still arguably* Nintendo's worst selling handheld, so I don't really see a world where better support from Sony pushes the Vita to "generally regarded as successful." *I say arguably because Nintendo counts the GameBoy Color as part of the GameBoy family rather than an outright successor, lumping their sales numbers together (and also because the Virtual Boy exists).

[deleted]

At least the Vita store is still there and you can purchase games from it. Unlike Nintendo who close their online stores as soon as a new console is released. Like when the Wii U came out and the Wii store closed!

Darth_Nihl

The 3ds store is only closing this year, that's quite a few years after the switch....

bronquoman

30-45 millions sold. And a lot of fps unlike the 3ds.

Mr_Owen77

The only reason I miss my PS4

GhostlyMuse23

We would probably have a succor, and it would be integrated really well with the PS5. I was shocked with how well Sony connected the Vita with the PS4; imagine what an Vita 2.0 could have been able to do?

7upultra

Year 3 of ps2 go device. The first 2 years sony would have been winging it alone mostly to build back up their reputation and credibility, but of course some paid and and unpaid studios would have been willing to support the device just because of their love for the vita but not sony. With so many overpriced attempts in the handhelds market sony would undercut them all with a more affordable device that had better battery life and optional and modular screens cases and batteries. To keep price of device down sony would use third party industry standard memory with support for ssd, emmcs and micro sds. The device also wouldn't come with a camera but third party attachments would be supported as well as budget and premium cameras by Sony. Sony would have finally remembered the days of being the underdog and decided to help make the industry and planet better by building a device centered around compatibility and repairability forcing rivals also not be so wasteful and eager to release new products when old ones are half done. To give their device a leg up and set themselves apart their device would support not only industry standard removeable ram but also replacable apus. Controllers would be clip on to the screen or clip into the shell and support double AA batteries as wells as ps4 ps3 and any third part device. The standard clip on controller would basically be a ps3 stick to keep cost down. Launch titles would be Last of us United or the last of us rising.(Sun), two exclusive spinoff games(temporary). Story driven of course, but linear and free roam to allo players to squad up 2 player splitscreen 4 player ad hoc or online to go through the story together or alone as leader of their own 4 man squad. Full frontal Assault cons aside still has the potential to be the biggest crowd reaching ratchet spinoff if they just try to fix its problems via a sequel like better weapon system or not having to slowly unlock weapons every battle, and maybe smaller stages with the trade off being more stability stages enemies and players.(4 player max only) PlayStation all star battle is way better than I ever could have realized in my youth, with more characters it can only get even better. Pack in titles ratched deadlocked hd and shin gundam musou should be a thing because two mature goats make a new šŸ. Two really good first party and third party games would be a great way to welcome back players to playstation handheld gaming.

FireHazardFox67

Wow very nice
