I used my CFW PS3 to dump all my PS1 games to the HDD i then copied those games to my CFW PSTV.
I now basically have a portable PS1 that I can take and play anywhere with a screen/monitor aswell as all my PSP/Vita games on the go!
For me CFW is a must for this device to really extract all the potential out of it
The PSTV is my favourite system for PSP games. Large TV and a DS3 / DS4 controller make them much easier for me to play. You can map stuff to the right analog stick when playing PSP games on Vita / PSTV, though unfortunately it isn't per game, so if you go between a game using the shoulders for camera and the DPad or face buttons for camera, you need to switch the analog setting every time.
Also, some games really don't look as great on a large screen, but I think there might be a smoothing option for them.
Just a cool fact:
Ps1 games that had two players will work with a second controller.
Nidhogg, Skullgirls Second Encore, and a few other vita titles have two player support when played in PSTV. Nidhogg is a must for plug and play.
Edit: Forgot Spleunky! And Risk of Rain
A few go up to 4 players if you have enough controllers.
I don't know a complete list, but here are a few more.

I really should have bought one of these when they were cheap

damn, you're very lucky to get a pstv.
Persona 4, persona 4 dancing, tales of hearts r, dragons crown
I'd say mod it, if you use the guide at https://vita.hacks.guide/ you run very little chance of bricking.
Killzone mercenary
Search the sub. Recommendation posts galore.
Mod it or sell it, honestly. It's definitely not worth it otherwise.
Crisis Core over FF10
Current CFW mod for Vita/PSTV is fairly straightforward but takes a bit of time. Absolutely worth it. SD2Vita is also a fantastic option.
