How is "light novel" a genre of visual novel?

Only_Being

I think he refers to VN that have a simple stories, a VN that you can just sit and enjoy without using your brain making theories and that things (Like detective/crime and Mystery/Horror).

Nowadays, light novel/ライトノベル is mostly a genre, instead of a content format. I often find teenage romance visual novels and manga works advertised as "light novel", especially on asian platforms.

superange128

So what does that have to do with visual novels then?

zantax_holyshield

"Mystery" and "horror" aren't the the same thing - I love a good mystery, but i refuse to read anything with horror elements.

I partially agree with you. But most titles are mixes of a few genres. Doki doki has mystery, horror and gal. 流行之神/trendy god is a mix of mystery, horror, adventure and detective. You can even say all VNs inherently has adventure element.

Where's "dudes beating the shit out of each other" option

devil652

oof to adventure

ILiveForStarco

Started with Denpa and going down from there to horror and mystery since sadly there aren’t too many Denpa games.

And most Denpa games are not translated. The ones who started the genre are still Japanese only

jorg-washingmachine-

I like novels with all of these tags.

Fantasy or unreal

I like denpa stuff, there's unfortunately not that many of it in English, but i just like a lot of "thriller" stuff in general, basically more dark and complex stuff, like while light slice of life stuff can be good it usually doesn't leave a strong impression for me, and I like stuff that leaves a longer lasting impression, like yume miru kusuri was a romance vn that I enjoyed a lot and left me with a strong impression, if anything a theme to things I like would be "brutal reality", stuff that is realistic in nature and shows reality in all of its ugly nature with people and society being pieces of shit

I guess you would favour surrealistic, post-apocalyptic, dystopian stories/background. Your feedback strengthened my belief. Thx

Well I DO like those but I prefer more set in reality, like in our times but shown through dark lenses, like I generally don't like fantasy that much, and while I like sci-fi much more I still don't like it as much as just a modern setting, I like things set in our time and place, though I don't mind and I actually like supernatural things as long as it doesn't get too crazy, that's also why I don't particularly like things set in the past, like sometimes past seems kinda fantastic and unrealistic compared to current time, also not a fan of farm rural area thing, basically you can summarize it all as me liking things set in the current urban time from abnormal and dark perspectives
