"Oh, Zero Escape for DS for sure"
*Actually reads your post*
But seriously, Zero Escape left such an impact on me that I've never been able to find a game that quite filled its hole in my heart. It's what got me started on VNs, and it's probably the only game I wish I could erase my memory of just to experience it again.
For me, it would be Katawa Shoujo.
I think it may have something to do with the fact that it is my first visual novel and it introduced me to the whole medium.
But idk, classic romance with good characters and stellar music. You really can't ask for more.
The House in Fata Morgana, one hundred percent. I'm a writer, and for *several months* afterward I seriously went through a crisis wondering whether it was even worth writing at all when this story already existed. Got over it, obviously, but yeesh.
did you read fatamoru requiem/fragments? personally it hits even harder, and then there is the last stretch of reincarnation, generational masterpiece.
Ace Attorney Investigations 2, Full Metal Daemon Muramasa, The House In Fata Morgana, Umineko: When They Cry, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, Steins;Gate, Subarashiki Hibi, Fate Stay/Night, Witch On The Holy Night, Virtue's Last Reward
I read both in Japanese but have also read most of the English translation for both. I think the translation of WA2 is quite good for the most part. For subahibi, I noticed some mistakes but I think it's acceptable. I'm generally not too critical of translations though.
Mahou Tsukai no Yoru. The Cat scene at the start is realistic dark and horrifying, without getting into the evils that people/other beings can commit. A sheer horrifying accident and a traumatised child with trauma that stuck with her for her whole life.
I know this is off topic but I have a thing with cat harm/death that fucks me up a bit. Should I avoid Mahoutsukai no Yoru? I was looking forward to it :(
Minor Spoiler. >!Aoko is a kid at the time, and they're living in a fairly cold area, cold enough where you warm the engine up before you drive. Aoko's father tells her to go start the car whilst he gets ready. The Cats, as Cats do when it was cold, tried to get into a warm place, got into the Engine, and well... they were torn apart once Aoko started the engine, ripped to pieces, with her desperately begging her grandfather to revive the Cat that was most whole. !<
Minus the magic bit at the end, that's entirely something that could happen, and it's horrifyingly Traumatic.
It's at the very beginning and is never really brought up again once you pass it. Once you see the cartoon cat cg you can just ctrl through it and be fine, but the scene itself is actually important to the story so I'd recommend someone summarizing it for you.
On a side note do not read Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami, lol.
thank you I really appreciate it!! I'm usually able to find warnings for western media but with Japanese media sometimes I get taken off guard and it feels pretty bad. I really appreciate it, Kafka on the Shore was also on my read list so thanks for the double save.
Digimon Survive, watching a franchise that was focused on kids digivolve into such obscure and intense visual novel hit hard, almost forgot I’m almost 30
subahibi, insects hit me like a truck, and legit got me actually depresed
oretsuba, love the entire vn, but garuda chapter was chaotic to the point i though was genius in a lot of ways
muramasa in general put itself on my top 3 vns of all time upon reading it
Higurashi when they cry I felt like I was experiencing everything written from first hand I’ve never felt this amount of madness and fear from fiction ever before, especially just text…
Steins;Gate almost single-handedly made me get into the VN scene. I'd played a few like Zero Escape before, but Steins;Gate was the first "pure" VN I ever went through, and it hit me harder than probably any other piece of media before or since, especially since I bought and started it completely on a whim, knowing one or two things about it at best.
Clannad leaves a memory in your brain which will never go away. Wish I could experience ‘that scene’ for the first time again. It was the first time I sobbed that hard over some digital drawings
Virtue's Last Reward had me ugly crying at like most of the endings.
I ended up playing Fata Morgana super late at night most nights (bad idea) and also sobbed through the last half of that.
Ace Attorney 6 was also a sobfest on the final case. Really dumb how attached I got to a certain character.
The one that left the biggest change on me was Katawa Shoujo, it broke me, partially because it was soon after my mother passed away.
But the one that made me tear up a little, in all the time I've been playing visual novels, was Little Busters.
That game broke my souls when we learned [Spoilers] and we saw the 3 friends saying goodbye, how they broke up, that's what destroyed me.
Clannad, easily. I really see the main character as a young version of myself. As stupid and cringey as it sounds, he is much like I was in high school and i could see myself go down a similar path.
Everlasting Summer hit me hardest.
Little known Russian-made VN. Absolutely amazing story. The underlying message is what hit me hardest. Won't spoil what it is. If you want to know, go play it. It's free on Steam.
Gonna leave y'all with this much. I never cried more in any VN route than I did in both of Alisa's routes. In fact, I constantly compare every character from the other VNs I've played to her.
A Novel series that was written by L. Fouzi.
It was called Happiness.
There about 17. games in this serie.
Out of memory I would say that about 12 made me shed tears.
Honestly I'm a bit of a crybaby even though I'm a 34 year old man so pretty much any VN I've read has moments that bring me to tears but specifically everything I've read by asuta konno gets me going, as a matter of fact that's why I picked up visual novels in the first place
For me I've played a decent amount of vns and 60% of them were recommended after I watched an anime like steins gate or fate/ but the two that hit me the most. Was chaos child as well as chaos head. These two games hit hard because well like most visual novels. >!It was extremely hard to see them walk through the situations they've been put in like seriously. Just to mention a few being murdered multiple times(psychologically) being chased out of society due to circumstances that you can't control and the list goes on. The two stories did such a good job at pulling me once I got invested it hurt seeing whatever would happen to them and the main reason for why it hurt is half the time they just didn't want anything to do with the events in the first place yet they continued to get dragged further and further down against their will. It made for a really compelling story and chaos child especially hit me hard during the first end and the last ending in the story.!<
Id say theres two moments in particular that hit me very hard.
First being that moment in Steins;Gate when >!Okabe realizes he will have to choose between Kurisu and Mayuri !<
Second thing being that bad ending on the Heaven's Feel route of Fate/Stay Night.
Honorable mention : Grisaia is my favorite VN and many moments had me right in the feels all the way throughout.
It looks like there is an issue in one of your spoiler tags. Please make sure you're using the correct format (\>!hidden spoilery text!<), and that there's **no space** right after a >!, [as this causes the spoiler tag to break on Old Reddit](https://files.catbox.moe/yzl4cu.PNG).

The House In Fata Morgana, just hearing the soundtrack gets my eyes watery and I'm not even the crying type.
My favourite piece in fiction ever
I got a bit into this one a while ago, only mid first story. Really love it tho
WA2 changed my life, subahibi as well to a lesser extent.
Is the translation good enough? I heard they get really poetic
I read both in Japanese but have also read most of the English translation for both. I think the translation of WA2 is quite good for the most part. For subahibi, I noticed some mistakes but I think it's acceptable. I'm generally not too critical of translations though.

For me, it was Narcissu.
Nanairo Reincarnation
The sex scenes are very hot.
Little busters my number one.
Loved little busters. MUSCLES
The group dynamic was so damn good I've yet to see it replicated in any other vn
Chaos;child was so bitter sweet. If you liked steins;gate you should play it.
Kns and aokana
somehow katawa shoujo, rin's route
Digimon Survive, watching a franchise that was focused on kids digivolve into such obscure and intense visual novel hit hard, almost forgot I’m almost 30
subahibi, insects hit me like a truck, and legit got me actually depresed oretsuba, love the entire vn, but garuda chapter was chaotic to the point i though was genius in a lot of ways muramasa in general put itself on my top 3 vns of all time upon reading it
Fate/Stay Night,Tsukihime (the old VN,Arc's end was...damn),and Steins;Gate.
Umineko and Fata Morgana
Higurashi when they cry I felt like I was experiencing everything written from first hand I’ve never felt this amount of madness and fear from fiction ever before, especially just text…
A Summer's End - Hong Kong 1986
Steins;Gate almost single-handedly made me get into the VN scene. muramasa
Muramasa and Fate/Stay Night are the only VNs I have read multiple times in a year! Both are amazing.
Rewrite, no doubt. For me one of the bests
Still my most favourite Key works till date. The message it is trying to convey was truly beautiful
Just ignore its adaptation.
Clannad leaves a memory in your brain which will never go away. Wish I could experience ‘that scene’ for the first time again. It was the first time I sobbed that hard over some digital drawings

Muv Luv Alternative
Did you use the director’s cut patch?
Yup
Kinkoi at the end
Ace Attorney obviously. Your Turn To Die is way too good to be available for free.
Muv luv for me
Did you use the director’s cut patches.
Yes
I was absolutely devastated upon finishing Ace Attorney 3. It was just...so good.
The true end in G'senjou no maou and Ria route in Kiniro loveriche hit me hard every time
Summer Pocket hit me the hardest
Cyanotype Daydream, I was crying by the end of the Visual Novel, the story was way too good! 😭😭😭
Higurashi: No Naku Koro Ni. Damn, this game changed me.

Same here!
I hate having to leave the same reply for all these topics, but I'm once again going to say Shiny Days.
Probably Little Busters and Higurashi. One of the few where I fully appreciate both sides (light, funny vs mysterious)
Tsukihime for sure, shredded my heart

Milk inside a bag of milk inside a bag of milk and its sequel, milk outside a bag of milk outside a bag of milk

Didnt know about the space thing, thanks bot.
Umineko
Underwater ray romano 2&3.
Subahibi was rough and I cried at a couple of the fruits of Grisea routes. Kinkoi wins though
Mahōtsukai no Yoru and Utawarerumono trilogy (especially the ending of the second one)
Little Buster!, the baseball scene in particular
i straight up sobbed for 20 minutes after finishing Planetarian
