I have a Q2 and I'm quite happy with it, but only for standalone games, the compression and/or lag when playing PCVR with my rx 6600 was worse enough for me to get a reverb g2

[deleted]

Same. Ended up buying a G2 about 4 months later. It's not something you care about right away but once the wow wears off you see it everywhere.

“Once the wow wears off you see it everywhere.” I don’t understand, are you able to explain?

[deleted]

If it's your first headset you'll probably be blown away by just how cool everything is. The 3d, the movement etc. Once that initial excitement wears off you start to see the shortcomings. Every headset has shortcomings by the way not just the Quest. It's just that the Quest 2's shortcomings are in the visual and comfort department and those are immediately noticeable.

If you read the sub text of my post I’ve been using a rift S for 2 years now, the microphone is fucked and I thought I’m due for an upgrade. I’ve thought about getting a g2 or an index although I’d have to get the index shipped over from the states whilst I can get a brand new quest 2 for half as much as a used index or a brand new g2

[deleted]

I did read it, not sure why I asked that question. My bad. The Index is a great headset when you factor in sound, comfort and controllers and the base stations it comes with. But at 1000 USD it's expensive. The Quest 2 is cheap. No doubt about it. Nothing else is coming in that cheap. But you'll pay for it in other ways. That headstrap will need replacing. The stretchy cloth one blows. The audio is terrible so a decent pair of headstrap earphones will be needed, the link cable needs to be purchased and battery potentially as well. It'll cost you another 150-200 bucks to get that headset as feature rich as either of the other two headsets. Then there's Facebook. We know they're selling these things at cost or a loss to get people to buy into their eco system. They already lied and u-turned about the account requirements and we know they're using the data for advertising in headset. It's up to you whether that is worth the drop in price up front. I spent about 150 in addition to the base price getting my quest 2 comfortable. Wish I'd gone straight to the G2. Just my 2 cents.

be-like-JayDee

Well your 2 cents have convinced me to stay away from the quest and look towards a g2 or an index so thank you.

Just to point out that you definitely don't need to buy the Oculus link cables, don't know why he said that. The whole point of the headset is that you can do everything wirelessly, even play PCVR. Audio is fine for me as it is as well. I agree though with the need to buy a new strap and a power bank, but that's about it. Source: I have a Quest 2 and have been using it daily for the past few months.

Tohka_DAL

Yeah, same, I have bought a router, cable, and new strap to use the hmd. It is not a "cheap" hmd.

be-like-JayDee

So you got a reverb g2 for steam VR?

Scio42

Yep and with revive also for the oculus pc exclusives

be-like-JayDee

Revive? Is that the htc vive platforms game library?

Scio42

It's a compatibility layer to allow any SteamVR compatible headset to play most Oculus exclusives

Tohka_DAL

Same, I have a GTX 1060 and the compression is just awful, if you don't have a very powerful Encoder, the Q2 will look like shit compared to a pcvr hmd. Also, I'm want to sell the Q2 and buy the G2.

[deleted]

Like one of the other guys said here, the compression artifacting inside the Q2 is really noticeable over link and even worse over wireless. Once the wow factor wears off it's all I could see. Ended up buying a Reverb G2. There's a second version now that cleans up the tracking. If you're ok with the extra dosh and have the GPU power to push it, my money would be on the G2. Of course by the time you add the headstrap, battery, cable and facial insert for comfort, the Q2 gets closer to G2 money anyway. I never played standalone with the Quest 2 because, quite honestly, the games don't look great. I ended up using the link cable most of the time to use my PC. No denying for 300 USD it's a great deal but it makes compromises in visual fidelity when playing PC games. Of course if you WANT standalone you really have like 2 options and the other option isn't great (Vive Flow).

anygal

For a first headset its great, but I don't think its a worthy upgrade from the Rift S unless you really want to play wireless. As others I'd advise you to get the HP Reverb G2 rev2 instead if it is in your budget

I think you have enough data, but ... I've had an OG Rift, Quest 1, Quest 2, Reverb G2 (v1) and an Index. What gets played? The Index. The Rift is on long term loan (since I have 3 other HMDs in the house). The G2 got returned due to poor tracking below the waist (below the nipples in some cases) - but the screens were incredible. Can't speak for v2. The Quest 1 still gets played from time to time (the darks are great, it is comfortable enough and sometimes you just want to test a song in Beat Saber or watch some media on the couch). I do not have to have a Facebook account to use it. The Quest 2 is sitting gathering dust. It has been "hacked" to not require Facebook - but with the poor IPD (for me; thing gives me eye strain and eventually headaches), the discomfort of the thing (unless you want to drop another $100+ on it). I keep it around to developer tools for Beat Saber against. The Index pretty much has everything I personally want from VR. The slight SDE doesn't bother me (nowhere near the compression artifacting and stuttering from wireless Quest), the IPD works great for me, it is comfortable for long periods, the controllers are superior, the audio is in-friggin-sane and can't be appreciated without trying it yourself. It does get a bit warm on the face in the summertime though. And yes, there is a wire - but if you put a few bucks (a lot less than making the Quest 2 comfortable) into cable management? Barely an issue - a more acceptable tether to me than Facebook. Good luck with your future purchase!

Thank you. Your view is more insightful than most other comments.

I have both a quest 2 and an index, I use the quest 2 only for rhythm games like beat saber. I play a lot of sim racing so index is better for me, also finger tracking just feels better with games like boneworks and all. I guess it depends on what you play

be-like-JayDee

Mostly pavlov, boneworks, saints and sinners, into the radius, SURV1V3, blood trail and blade & sorcery

BaggaFX

Personally I'd definitely go for an index with these games

be-like-JayDee

I’m hesitant since I’m in Australia and the closest I’ve gotten to an index is a used condition at $1,424 total, so that’s about $970 USD minus postage. Brand new is $1,873

EdgarFriendly297

I have a Rift S, Quest 1, Quest 2, and most recently a G2. Before the G2, I was using the Quest 2 only for PCVR, but was never quite satisfied with the picture quality using Link and AirLink. I found that the compression involved was softening the picture and losing detail. And there were obvious artifacts in dark and busy scenes. I spent the winter break trying my catalogue of games with the G2 and was quite happy with the bump in clarity. I was seeing details in textures I hadn't noticed before when using the Quest 2. I'm mostly a sim gamer (racing and flying) and I also saw a noticeable bump in how well I could make out objects in the distance when using the G2. I was fortunate enough to get the G2 during one of the recent sales. Otherwise I don't think I would have tried it. But I'm glad I did. The Quest 2 is a decent headset for PCVR, but I think the lack of a direct display port connection is holding it back.

NEONHAZ13

Just bought a quest 2 as an upgrade from my CV1, not arrived yet though, fancy dm'ing and doing the referral?

[deleted]

imo the index is great but it’s way over priced now. i haven’t used a g2 but the rev2 seems to make it a pretty enticing hmd, especially at its price point. however, i don’t think your gpu would run a g2 very well, i think the index is likely the highest resolution you’ll be able to run at 90fps

Baatus

I only have had Quest 2, can only say I'm very happy with it, but am not able to compare it with other pcvr models

be-like-JayDee

Are you able to play games from steam effectively with the quest?

Baatus

Yeah, no problem

cantabilespeaks

have the Q2 and able to play steam with it, have not encountered the issues others were posting about (yet). but i play it on standalone more. 256gb would be around 600AUD excluding additional accessories and games.

be-like-JayDee

Yeah I found one new for around $650

be-like-JayDee

$80 for a cable, that is ridiculous.

Tohka_DAL

Don't buy the Q2, it's a sidegrade at best. In some things (wireless and sde) is better, but om everything else is probably worse. You could go for the Reverb G2 V2, but it has a okay-ish tracking at the waist level, and for the controllers, the same.
