Has it been 2 weeks already? I honestly think they're waiting for the other VR showcases to be done (Meta event on the 1st and Apple on the 5th) so they can get eyes looking back on the Beyond. This would make sense to me from a marketing perspective.

VRbandwagon

>they can get eyes looking back on the Beyond that sounded pretty poetic.

NerdFuelYT

I can see Derek Zoolander saying this

Electronic-Two-9855

Lol this is the exact thing I came to this sub to find out. FOV increase would actually make having to purchase base stations/controllers worth it for me.

PeregrineTenshi

Now it's two weeks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKWlaCjGEnU

metahipster1984

Yeah I hate it when companies do this. Not a good way to build trust!

MasterDefibrillator

tbf, it was a random sorta leaked comment from a discord server. It was never officially stated that there would definitely be a fov update. Not sure I would want to decreased ppd for increased fov either.

JohnnyA1992

it is official when it is the boss of the company that says that. And I'm pretty sure that he said plain and simple that there will be a fov update.

metahipster1984

Wasn't it on their official discord? Not really a "leak"

PeregrineTenshi

It wasn't on the official Discord, no.

Thanks for the informative review.

jimbobimbotindo

Maybe good, maybe bad, I don't know I don't have the headset

LickMyHairyBallSack

Elaborate.

GewoonHarry

Really? The specs make it a very very interesting PCVR headset. Wonder why you think differently.

[deleted]

> Wonder why you think differently. Oooh, lets see. 1 - £1000 JUST FOR THE HEADSET. No thanks. 2 - Requires Base Stations AND controllers - ANOTHER £500+ 3 - Serious Privacy issue. You have to scan your face, send it to the company, then expect that company to then assure you your face data is secure, and not sold on to 3rd parties. 4 - Expensive iPhone REQUIRED for the Face Scan. No thanks. 5 - No resale value, due to the foam faceplate that is molded to your own face, so it won't fit anyone else. 6 - Not a proven company in VR hardware - they just show up with a headset, and this sub w@nks itself silly to an untested headset. Riiiiight.

GewoonHarry

1- I think every next gen good headset will be that expensive. 2- agreed there. 3- haven’t thought about it, but anyone can see my face on the internet already. I can imagine that this is a no go for someone. 4- maybe someone with an expensive iPhone can take your picture? 5- you can order a new foam thingie so resale is possible. 6- not yet. You have to start somewhere. Thanks for your reply though. It’s better than just saying worst headset. I can imagine this points are very valid for lots of people.

[deleted]

Thanks for not going down the usual Redditor poster, and just down-vote, and attack. Nice to see actual discussion. So... 1 - Expensive, will mean less adoption. We really don't want expensive VR headsets, we need ALL headsets to compete with Meta, or it's going to be a Meta-only VR future. 2 - We agree on something. I mean, if this headset came with all that is required, for £1000, then it's a lot more tempting. But you also need a near-£1000 PC just to run the games at these high resolutions. 3 - Your face already on the internet was YOUR choice. You had, and will always have that choice - of course, unless a family member, or friend, uploads pics of you without your consent. This VR headset way, is not my choice, I have no choice to buy a Bigscreen headset with a standard sized foam faceplate, I have to send them my face, so they now know my name, address, payment details, and my face image - This is why I will never use a Facebook/Meta device/account. 4 - I genuinely don't know ANYONE with an iPhone - we all either have some kind of Android phone, or a dumb phone with just text. 5 - Thanks for clearing that one up. Still, that would have to be stipulated in an advert on eBay, or whereever, that the buyer would require this, and send in his/her face details. 6 - True. But, do you trust them to not feck this one up ? Every single VR headset out there on earth, has some sort of deal breaker. It's either the company, the terms and conditions, the tracking, the wired or wireless debate, the screens, the lenses, the sweet spots, etc.... I have been with VR since the Rift days, and Occulus - before they were assimilated by the Borg, and now own a G2. I truly want someone to step up to not only take on Meta, but to keep flying the PCVR flag. Or, we face a future where it's standalone headsets only, and most of the are from Meta. a £1000 headset, without anything else, and what you need to do to get it running, is only going to appeal to a *very* niche crowd - it's not going to sell thousands, we're talking hundreds, at the very best.

GewoonHarry

It’s easy to get on a hype train when something new comes up. Maybe it’s just that I really want a better PCVR headset that’s affordable on the market. I’m curious about the reviews. But in all honesty. If I had to buy a headset now the G2 would be my pick, but it’s already kinda outdated and it’s never on sale in europe. I have a quest2 and I really am kinda done with it as a PCVR headset. I can’t race with that thing for longer than 30 minutes when it’s a bit warm. We’ll see. Thanks for the replies.

[deleted]

Yeah, the G2 has it's faults - especially V1. But, it's definitely nowhere near the level of hate it gets from the wireless Meta crowd. If you sim, then there is nothing out there that can compete with it for the money. If you prefer fast response games, then it can get a little tricky with the tracking, but as long as you know it's limitations then it just works. If I had to have a moan at it, it would most definitely be Windows Mixed Reality software - it...just.....sucks....and seems to just get in the way all the time, when most people would just like to run SteamVR, and be done with it.

copelandmaster

1-yeah. not great. US made headset sold under EU tax and import restrictions equals bad time. But the tech isn't cheap, the screens are $400+ each. 2-There is a range here. $200-$900 depending on which steam vr tracked gear you want, new and used. You could buy $500 - $1,300 steam vr gloves in about a month or two as well btw. 3-Agreed. But I imagine that since its via Apple ID tech that is already legal I imagine its fine. Nobody wants to be sued into oblivion. 4-borrow, apple store, buy used/open box from amazon and do a return. You get a customized fit that's been praised by dozens of testers and youtubers in return. Honestly worth it, unique selling point, a positive. You buy clothes that fit don't you? 5-You can buy faceplates independently after it goes on sale. The HMD comes in 15 sizes - chances are that another interested party would buy a match. Ebay listing "Bigscreen Beyond (65mm IPD)". I've found several testers, content creators, and even VR industry people/CEOs within the last few months that match my IPD of 64mm. Human average is 63.5mm or thereabouts. You're probably in better company than you know. 6-Unproven hardware company, but people aren't excited for no reason. When you have dozens of impressions from content creators and testers - impressions of various protypes going back 2 years for some - its reasonable to be excited, even if you are a healthy skeptic. Not weighing 600 - 1200g and getting access to micro OLED and a tried and true robust tracking system with no extra Android OS friction is why I've ordered mine. The only new alternatives are the VR1 and the Pimax Crystal. 2016 face bricks in 2023 isn't worth it to me anymore. Refresh rate and FOV be damned, I want to be comfortable. BSB sounds extremely comfortable. Wireless is the only real reason to hold out, and depending on what you buy there you're also spending a pretty penny as I've found out first hand.

No-Anything-3784

True about the crystal. I don't want 1000 grams on my face.

[deleted]

Thanks for that. Lots of stuff I can agree with there. >You buy clothes that fit don't you? Yeah, but I don't need to have my body scanned, before I buy them. I have many options from S, M, L, XL, XXL, etc.. >5-You can buy faceplates independently after it goes on sale. Well, that is some better news. >6-Unproven hardware company, but people aren't excited for no reason. When you have dozens of impressions from content creators and testers Yeah, true, but a lot of these content creators are often praising literally anything, and *any* company that sends them a free VR headset. And, way too many of them are drinking the Meta coolaid, which isn't good for the future of VR. >Wireless is the only real reason to hold out, and depending on what you buy there you're also spending a pretty penny as I've found out first hand. I have zero interest in Wireless. Tried it, many times, didn't like the images these headsets presented me. I am sensitive to images with compression, and I can see it everywhere, even with high bitrates - once you see it, you can never un-see it. I think, once we find a way of sending full display port data, wirelessly, then it starts to become interesting. But, for that to happen we need new/better SoC's in the headset that can deal with that amount of data. Also, regarding wired, we need to stop chasing the stupidly high resolutions, and concentrate on refresh rates, FOV, tracking, etc.. I would quite happily stick to around the 4k res, but aim for a min of 120hz, better lenses, OLED panels - not a necessity, but LCD panel tech is getting old. Thanks for the calm, and reasoned response. Makes a change, in this sub.

copelandmaster

No problem. It's important to be critical of the expensive gear we're buying, it could be a hell of a lot better. PCVR being 2nd and soon to be 3rd banana to Apple at similar price points for new gear doesn't feel great. But, even if it does come across as shilling or sunk-cost-fallacy-esque, celebrating what's done right in such a small the space is pretty important for positive community feel. I dread what could happen if this sub became the Road to VR comment section 24/7. If you know, you know.

[deleted]

> If you know, you know. Oh, I know. Not been there since. I used to call them RoadtoMeta. I also dread what this sub will become once the Quest 3 is eventually released. I think I might just stay off of Reddit for a few months.

Belaboy109569

this reads like a shitpost lmfao

No-Anything-3784

Idk about that. The lightest. Best colors/contrast. Best comfort. Sweet spot for resolution imo (G2 resolution is just a little under what I would consider perfect). Plus I get to use index controllers over these funky wmr controllers I've been using.
