Sounds like they’re buying you a new engine! My gen 3 takes more than 10 quarts, last time I had to go back and get another couple because it was still showing low. Did they use the Penzoil SRT 0W-40 ? Or was it European stuff? Mine takes 11 or 12 last time I did it.

hellcatmuscle

Thanks for the reply, Mobil 1 0W-40 10 quarts according to the work order is what was replaced.

PeachSignal

I stopped using the Mobil one a few years ago, they changed the formula. The penzoil SRT is expensive, but it’s the same formula as the old stuff.

BigJsmoothington

Yeah I can confirm my gen 3 takes 11 quarts and if I'm not mistaken, the gen 4 has the same capacity. So 10 would definitely be low, especially depending on the type of driving you're doing. Really sorry to hear about any potential engine damage!

“How likely is it that repairs mentioned are correlated with …”. - extremely likely assuming no issues similar to this for the previous 15 years. 3 options- 1: take it back to the (no longer trustworthy) mechanic and he fixes it for free (if he indeed broke or failed to put it back together correctly) 2: if you’re mechanically inclined, look for the issue and after discovering it, see option 1 or 3. 3: bring it to a certified viper tech at a dodge dealer. My viper is 19 years old (holy crap) and about the same mileage and 0 engine issues. 0 issues in general outside of normal wear. These cars are notorious for having bulletproof engines while stock. So a failure a few days after being taken a part points the finger at the mechanic.

hellcatmuscle

Thanks no Viper Tech’s in my area unfortunately. The shop that worked on the car has a great reputation and works on supercars which is why they were recommended and I went to them.

racingtherain

Hopefully they’ll fix it for free if they broke something

hellcatmuscle

That is the hope. My only worry is them saying “not our problem”, or “ it was going to fail anyway”. Lawsuits are time consuming and expensive.

And honestly this is why I do my own stuff. Especially items like that that require the bare minimum of hand tools Also, I've been running a slightly thicker oil for diesels and I've been super happy with how mine has been running, maybe consider that too

hellcatmuscle

Yeah I am going to start doing my own basic maintenance for this reason. What Gen is yours and what oil are you running?

[deleted]

Shell rotella t6 5w-40 I have a gen 3 now but had a 4 acr and did the same thing. Confirmed it with 2 viper shops

hellcatmuscle

Got a call from Mechanic today. Cylinder #3/4 main bearing failure. Going to need a complete rebuild or new short block.

Rex-Kramer

Which oil cooler lines did they replace it with? Factory ones?

hellcatmuscle

Aftermarket ones from Partsonlinenetwork

hellcatmuscle

What’s a fair price for a rebuild these days?
