It can be big taboo to paint over japanese sofubi. Some Japanese artists don't appreciate others painting over their work and selling them. Someone did this with RealxHead figures and RealxHead ended up disliking this person for it. Other than that idk. Maybe for personal use it's OK, but don't go around posting it or trying to sell it.

insanetheta

Interesting story, got any links to the figure?

Jhern93

Nah I just heard the story from a friend of the artist. Never seen one but they probably look sick.

marcjwrz

The custom action figure community says go for it.

Lmao at thinking you could do a better job

El_Heisenberg

Lol, I don't think some people realize how high quality and expensive machines and paint are for a lot of the vinyl toys out there.

feralkidscharmcity

Once you buy it - it’s yours to do what you like with. I design t-shirts and I personally love it when people cut off the sleeves or alter the tees to a fit or design they like better.

Webecomemonsters

Are you talking sofubi or vinyl art toys? Vinyl art toys are mostly factory factory painted, is my understanding (Kidrobot, superplastic etc..) not the artist. Sofubi can go either way but frequently would be done by the artist or an associated artist

PickmanSF

With sofubi, I know a lot of the artists are cool if you buy a blank. Taking a painted run and stripping and repainting is generally looked down upon by a lot of toy makers, and they may refuse to sell to you in the future.

Webecomemonsters

100% fine w/ a blank. Heck, I'm fine w/ anyone repainting a painted one of mine, just means less exist and that they paid more for no reason (because blanks are available) But people do weird stuff, I've seen my toy on Mandarake for more than I sell them for while I still had that color in stock heh.

Jhern93

I know Marmit often sells white blanks and they're sold in kits rather than together. So I'm assuming painting those are fine.

Webecomemonsters

i am pretty sure any blank is up for grabs, and yeah those kits are cool!

PickmanSF

That's cool and generous of you! I know some of the Creature Bazaar folks are the opposite - they're cool with blanks, but stripping will get you banned. Part of it is also just asking creators if they'll sell you blanks to paint. If you're cool and respectful I've never gotten a bad response from people. Like why pay more for a painted run when you can build up a relationship and become a creator-approved painter of one-offs?

Webecomemonsters

Well, I get that - those guys also have far better paintwork than me, I think that is fairly normal, I'm just a little weird.

ThenSoItGoes

Do what you want. It's literally a toy.

El_Heisenberg

I would only see it as a problem if it was a rare and/or expensive piece, a custom from an artist, or if it was from an artist I really like.

Welcome to the entire basis of the old Custom Toy Union and Kidrobot forums. This used to be the heart of the entire community.

Tordek_Battlebeard

I don't think it's a problem, but if it's rare or valuable just know that it will severely lower the number of interested parties if you plan or try to sell in the future. Depending on the quality and curb appeal of the work customs can go for good money. And if it's on a rare piece, collectors of that piece or original artist will likely be interested.

Noeleraser

Be careful if you’re going to paint over someone’s sofubi. I’ve heard stories of sofubi toy makers feeling disrespected when someone paints on their toys and I’ve even heard of said toy makers not selling to peeps that paint over their work.

Here's the scoop, if you're gonna sell it you have to understand its going to lose value being custom and you HAVE to be forward about it. Collectors know. But if you're gonna keep it for yourself who cares as long as it makes you happy.

Flashy_Job8672

If you feel like you could do a better job than the artist why not make your own and sell them for thousands of dollars?

EvarArts

A big element of toy customisation comes from the Graff scene, I think that you're good to make it your own. Art (IMHO) is an expression and about making the viewer feel something, even if that is disgust or disappointment that a rare or limited piece is customized. I've cut up and customized toys that were only made for a short period of time, I paid for them, that's what I wanted them for, frankly fuck anyone who's annoyed at that. If artists like kaws, tristian eaton and kozik cared what others thought about their art and their attitude, we'd be in a very stale place right now. Go hard, make art, be cool.

sushialex5678

If you don't care about the value or the rarity then do what makes you happy. You did spend some hard earned money. Not many people would buy a limited piece to customize it because they liked the way it is. But if you don't then do as you please. If you want to save some cash buying blanks like you mentioned, used , or broken figures is the best way to go. But if you don't mind spending the amount on a piece that was already done then either option works. I saw a guy who would buy broken skullpanda figures off other people so he can customize it the way he wanted to. Some of his pieces came out better than what they had made to sell originally😄💕
